A 5-year old, vaccinated, untravelled and neutered female Doberman with occasional exposure to raw food presented for investigation of severe thrombocytopenia and anaemia. Extensive investigations led to a diagnosis of non-associative immune thrombocytopenia, with secondary bleeds resulting in anaemia. Management with repeated packed red blood cell transfusions, vincristine (0.02 mg/kg single intravenous injection), prednisolone (50 mg/m2/day) and mycophenolate (10 mg/kg twice daily) allowed normalisation of haematology parameters. Scheduled reassessment 10 days after discharge revealed lethar

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare fibroinflammatory disease with idiopathic and secondary causes. Idiopathic disease is more common and is believed to be immune mediated; associations with autoimmune diseases and/or inflammatory disorders such as IgG4 related disease are often present. Common complications include hydronephrosis and venous stenosis and/or thrombosis. Due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, imaging is vital for diagnosis; in addition, imaging may help distinguish idiopathic from secondary causes and can aid in distinguishing early/active disease from chronic/inacti

CD146, also known as melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM), is overexpressed in various cancer patients, making it a valuable predictor for early diagnosis. In this work, an immune sandwich electrochemical biosensor is proposed for sensitive and non-invasive quantitative detection of CD146 in serum. Zirconium-based MOF (UIO-66) was modified by simultaneous copper atom doping, in situ growth carbon-based support and physical embedding of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs). Triple-modified Cu-UIO-66@SWCNT/PtNPs nanocomposites with high stability and excellent electrochemical properties, serve as su

The disruption of nerve parenchyma and axonal networks triggered by spinal cord injury (SCI) can initiate a cascade of events associated with secondary injury. Toll-like receptors play a critical role in initiating and regulating immune-inflammatory responses following SCI; however, the precise involvement of Toll-like receptor-3 (TLR3) in secondary neuronal injury remains incompletely understood. To investigate the potential contribution of TLR3 in mediating neuronal pressure-induced damage, we established a stress-induced neuronal damage model using rat anterior horn motor neuron line (VSC4.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome caused by macrophages and cytotoxic T cells with aberrant activation. The primary (genetic) form, which is caused by mutations that affect lymphocyte cytotoxicity and immune regulation, is most prevalent in children, whereas the secondary (acquired) form is prevalent in adults. Secondary HLH is commonly caused by infections or cancers, but it can also be caused by autoimmune disorders, in which case it is known as macrophage activation syndrome (MAS; or MAS-HLH). A 25-year-old female presented with a high-grade fever that

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a potentially fatal hyperinflammatory disorder characterized by hypercytokinemia caused by excessive activation of cytotoxic T cells and macrophages. HLH is caused by a variety of factors and is classified into primary and secondary HLH. Familial HLH (FHL) types 1-5, X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome types 1 and 2, and FHL syndrome with hypopigmentation are all examples of primary HLH. Secondary HLH, on the other hand, is linked to infections, malignant tumors, autoimmune diseases, and other diseases. The causes of HLH vary, and finding the under

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an RNA virus that preferentially infects hepatocytes and is transmitted through infected blood contact. Chronic hepatitis C can result in serious life-threatening conditions like fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Additionally, it can result in extrahepatic conditions including lymphoproliferative disease and mixed cryoglobulinemic vasculitis. Mixed cryoglobulinemic vasculitis occurs as a result of immune system dysfunction leading to immunoglobulin deposits into different blood vessels in the body. The main manifestations commonly seen are purpura, weakness, art

Syphilis is a rare cause of vision loss that mostly occurs after an infection of the meninges, brain tissue, and parenchyma. Syphilis can mimic auto-immune disease like giant cell arteritis which also manifest as sudden vision loss. Spirochete Treponema pallidum can spread through sexual contact and cause painless ulcers. Spirochetes can disseminate systemically and lead to secondary syphilis. Ocular syphilis can affect all parts of the eye in secondary and tertiary stages. It can present as scleritis, inflammation of the optic nerve, and uveitis. We present the case of a 59- year-old male suf

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma is a rare disease entity of extranodal large B-cell lymphoma and is characterized by selective growth of tumor cells in the lumina of small vessels in systemic organs. The challenge in obtaining sufficient tumor cells from biopsy specimens has hampered the elucidation of underlying biology. Recent advances in xenograft models and plasma cell-free DNA have revealed that the intravascular large B-cell lymphoma has genetic features similar to those of activated B-cell-like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and frequent genetic alterations in immune-check point rela

Lichens are symbiotic organisms which are composed fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria. They produce a variety of characteristic secondary metabolites. Such substances have various biological properties including antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor activities. Angiogenesis, the growth of new vessels from pre-existing vessels, contributes to numerous diseases including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, infectious, and immune disorders. Antiangiogenic therapy is a promising approach for the treatment of such diseases by inhibiting the new vessel formation. Technological advances have led

BACKGROUND: Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome (HUVS) is a rare disease due to small vessel inflammation and characterized by chronic urticarial vasculitis and arthritis. Multi-organ manifestations may include glomerulonephritis, ocular inflammation (uveitis, episcleritis), and recurrent abdominal pain. To the best of our knowledge, just other nine cases of HUVS with cardiac valvular involvement have been reported in the literature.
CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old woman presented to the emergency department because of a cerebral haemorrhage. She suffered from a severe HUVS form wit

INTRODUCTION: The underlying pathophysiology of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is characterised by excessive inflammation and tissue destruction secondary to abnormal immune activation. The term primary HLH refers to a genetic abnormality that predisposes to the condition whereas secondary refers to HLH being triggered by an underlying condition such as infection (often Epstein Barr Virus), autoimmune, or neoplastic disease. Its variable clinical presentation poses an obstacle to prompt diagnosis in the elderly patient.

PURPOSE: Encephalitis secondary to human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection is frequently encountered in immunocompromised patients; in contrast, HHV-6 encephalitis in immunocompetent patients is rare. There are only 3 reports of status epilepticus due to HHV-6 encephalitis in immunocompetent adults. In the present study, a case of refractory status epilepticus secondary to HHV-6 encephalitis was reported in an immunocompetent female.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a previously healthy 46-year-old female who presented with a one-week history of back pain, fever and generalized tonic-clonic sei

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a major healthcare problem and there is much to be explored regarding the secondary pathobiology to identify early predictive markers and new therapeutic targets. While documented changes in thrombosis and inflammation in major trauma have been well described, growing evidence suggests that isolated TBI also results in systemic alterations in these mechanisms. Here, we review recent experimental and clinical findings that demonstrate how blood-brain barrier dysfunction, systemic immune response, inflammation, platelet activation, and thrombosis cont

Superspreaders are critical infectious resources in multiple infectious diseases. They can be asymptomatic or present mild symptoms but can transmit pathogens to susceptible populations, leading to severe symptoms, and even death. Early identification of this population is extremely important to inhibit the spread of infectious diseases. Right now, the whole global world is suffering from a devastating infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this article, a superspreader cluster event in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified by

Type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling paradoxically impairs host immune responses during many primary and secondary bacterial infections. Lack of IFN-I receptor reduces bacterial replication and/or bacterial persistence during infection with several bacteria. However, the mechanisms that mediate the adverse IFN-I effect are incompletely understood. Here, we show that Usp18, an interferon-stimulated gene that negatively regulates IFN-I signaling, is primarily responsible for the deleterious effect of IFN-I signaling during infection of mice with Listeria monocytogenes or Staphylococcus aureus Mec

The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological characteristics of the myometrium obtained in postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) of unknown etiology secondary to uterine atony. These characteristics were selected from among registered cases of clinically suspected amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) and classified as PPH of unknown etiology because of no obvious cause of PPH at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, a registration center for clinical AFE in Japan. Immunohistochemical studies were performed on myometrium using anti-mast cell tryptase, anti-neutrophil elastase, anti-CD68, anti-CD88,

Interdigital intertrigo and onychomycosis has the potential cause of severe bacterial infectious complications with pain, mobility problems, abscess, erysipelas, cellulitis, fasciitis and osteomyelitis. In another hand, diabetic neuropathy, which affects 60-70% of those with diabetes mellitus, is one of the most troubling complications for persons with diabetes. These people are high suspecting to be infected by dermatophytic infections in interdigital spaces or onychomycosis witch are frequently induce damage to the stratum corneum, leading to bacterial proliferation and secondary infection.
