BACKGROUND: While cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are on rise, postoperative infections have become an increasingly prominent problem. We designed this study to compare the four coagulation indicators involving endothelial injury and identify important predictors of postoperative infection after cardiac surgery with CPB.
METHODS: This is a single-center, prospective, observational study of postoperative cardiac surgery patients admitted to the department of critical care medicine, Peking Union Medical College Hospital from July 15, 2024 to August 26, 2024. Patients postoperat

Coccidiosis is an economically significant protozoan disease and an intracellular parasite that significantly impacts poultry production. The gastrointestinal tract microbiota plays a central role in host health and metabolism, and these microbes enhance chickens' immune systems and nutrient absorption. In this study, we analyzed the abundance and diversity of microbiota of the jejunum and cecum of a dual-purpose indigenous Horro chicken following Eimeria maxima infection. We compared microbial abundance, composition, and diversity at the 4- and 7- days post-infection using 16S rRNA gene seque

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminth that occurs worldwide, though it is particularly endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. It can cause long-lasting and potentially fatal infections due to its ability to replicate within its host. S. stercoralis causes gastrointestinal and dermatological morbidity. The objective of this study was to assess the S. stercoralis infection risk and, using geostatistical models, to predict its geographical distribution in Cambodia.
METHODOLOGY / PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A nation-wide, community-based parasitological survey

Leptospirosis is considered a neglected disease with an estimated more than one million cases every year. Since rodents are at the same time the main reservoir and generally asymptomatic to Leptospira infection, understanding why some animal species are resistant and others are susceptible to this infection would shed some light in how to control this important zoonosis. The innate immune response against Leptospira is mainly dependent on phagocytosis and activation of the Complement System. In this context, cytokines may drive the early control of infection and the adaptive response. Since th

The skin microenvironment at the site of infection plays a role in the early events that determine protective T helper 1/type 1 immune responses during cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) infection. During CL in nonhealing BALB/c mice, early interleukin-4 (IL-4) can instruct dendritic cells for protective Th1 immunity. Additionally, keratinocytes, which are the principal cell type in the skin epidermis, have been shown to secrete IL-4 early after Leishmania major infection. Here, we investigated whether IL-4/IL-13 signaling via the common IL-4 receptor alpha chain (IL-4Rα) on keratinocytes contribute

Toxoplasmosis caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is a zoonotic parasitic disease. Oxidative stress plays a dominant role in the host's defense against protozoan infection. In the present study the possible involvement of local oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of T. gondii were investigated. Twenty five female Wistar rats were infected with RH strain of Toxoplasma tachyzoites and twenty female rats were used as control group that only received sterile PBS. Tissue samples from liver, heart and brain on 0, 3, 5, 8 and 45 days post infection were collected. As biochemical mark

In 2016, the World Health Organization reported that one person dies of tuberculosis (TB) every 21 s. A host environment that Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) finds during its route of infection is the lung mucosa bathing the alveolar space located in the deepest regions of the lungs. We published that human lung mucosa, or alveolar lining fluid (ALF), contains an array of hydrolytic enzymes that can significantly alter the M.tb surface during infection by cleaving off parts of its cell wall. This interaction results in two different outcomes: modifications on the M.tb cell wall surface and r

Familial dystautonomia (FD) patients are deficient in type C fibers, suggesting that there may be a different pattern of infection and clinical presentation when infected by Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV). These viruses infect and are reactivated in the periphery of the body through type C sensory nerve fibers. HSV-1 infects epithelial cells, penetrates into type C fibers, and migrates to the ganglia to generate latent infection. In reactivation, the viral DNA migrates through type C fibers, infecting the epidermis at the entry site. VZV infects through the

METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science from inception to October 30, 2024. The review was c

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to plague our hospitals. With the appearance of isolates that are resistant to vancomycin, now, more than ever, we must direct our efforts to controlling its development and spread. New antimicrobials have become available for treatment, but may only be a short-term answer. Our efforts towards control must be directed towards infection control measures such as improved hand hygiene with user-friendly products, such as alcohol-based hand disinfectants. Intranasal mupirocin may have a place in prevention of surgical site infection, alt…

From the many existing documents on the history of glanders, it is possible to detail the practical measures adopted for disease surveillance and control from antiquity until the 19th century, principally in European countries. Surveillance is based on clinical diagnosis, post-mortem examination, animal inoculation and knowledge of the conditions under which infection occurred: aetiology, pathogenesis, susceptible species, virulent material, mode of infection, incubation period, etc. The historical data are assembled and compared, with comments on each of these points. Control is based on the

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a chronic nematode infection transmitted by mosquitoes and in sub-Saharan Africa it is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti. The disease was targeted for global elimination by 2020 using repeated community-wide mass drug administration (MDA) distributed in endemic areas. However, recently, there has been a growing recognition of the potential role of including vector control as a supplement to MDA to achieve elimination goal. This study was carried out to determine mosquito abundance and transmission of bancroftian filariasis on Mafia Islands in Tanzania as

Isogenic mouse strains have previously been characterized as susceptible or resistant to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection; the former presented anergy in delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions (DTH) and progressive disease with high numbers of colony-forming units (CFU), while the later presented preserved DTH responses and control of the infectious process. Here, we studied whether susceptible mice infected with P. brasiliensis and treated with the antifungal drug trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) had their behavior pattern altered to the one observed in infected resistant mice. INTRODUCTION: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a leading cause of healthcare-associated morbidity and mortality, with a significant portion being preventable. Despite this, BSIs remain common, particularly in Australian hospitals. Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) in Queensland has implemented a surveillance program that focuses on the preventability of BSIs, with continuous loop, real-time audit-feedback to teach clinicians about preventable factors and possible actions. This study evaluated the program's implementation and impact on reducing infections.
METHODS: A Type I hybrid implementat

BACKGROUND: While introduction of universal masking was associated with significant declines in health care-associated-respiratory-viral-infections (HA-RVI), subsequent studies have shown mixed results. We sought to evaluate the impact on HA-RVI when masking was continued in the postpandemic period.
METHODS: Observational study in 2 Singaporean hospitals from January 1, 2016 to April 30, 2024. Prepandemic, masking (surgical masks) was only practiced in high-risk wards. During the pandemic, masking was made mandatory hospital-wide, together with other extensive mitigation measures; in the post
