Epidemiological evidence for a differential effect of hookworm species, Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus, on iron status of children.

BACKGROUND: The hookworms, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus, cause significant gastrointestinal blood loss. In clinical studies, greater blood losses have been reported with A. duodenale. However, there has been no evidence that endemic A. duodenale infection has greater impact than N. americanus infection on the iron status of populations. METHODS: In a sample of 525 school children in Pemba Island, Tanzania, we compared the degree of anaemia and iron deficiency associated with the two hookworm species at the individual and community (i.e. school) levels. Multiple regression was

[An infantile case of cerebral infarction associated with thrombocytosis].

Cerebral infarction in children is often caused by intracranial vascular disorder, cardiac disease, head injury, or infection, and is rarely induced by blood disease. In this paper, we describe an infantile case of cerebral infarction associated with thrombocytosis. A female infant of eight months of age developed left hemiparesis after a slight head injury. Her CT and MRI demonstrated a cerebral infarction located from the right internal capsule to the right corona radiata. Laboratory findings revealed iron-deficiency anemia and thrombocytosis with a platelet count 107.5 x 10(4)/mm3. Although

Hepcidin is low in children with moderate acute malnutrition and asymptomatic malaria: secondary analysis of a 2×2×3 factorial randomised trial in Burkina Faso.

Children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) have an increased risk of iron deficiency, anaemia and death from infectious diseases. The iron-regulating hormone hepcidin is increased in inflammation and may be important in regulating iron metabolism in children with MAM. Asymptomatic malaria has previously been associated with elevated s-hepcidin. We assessed the association between inflammation, iron status, anthropometry and malaria and serum hepcidin (s-hepcidin) and evaluated the effect of food supplementation on s-hepcidin in a secondary analysis in 1019 children with MAM from a randomi

Depletion of trace elements and acute ocular toxicity induced by desferrioxamine in patients with thalassaemia.

High doses of intravenous desferrioxamine infused over a short period of time induce a large faecal and urinary iron excretion but also produce retinal abnormalities that are characterised by decreased amplitude on electroretinography and defective dark adaptation. This regimen also results in high faecal iron, zinc, and copper excretion, and reduced granulocyte zinc concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activity. The retinal abnormalities may be related to the zinc and copper deficiency and/or iron depletion 'per se' which interferes negatively with critical iron dependent enzymes.

Iron and Heart Failure: Diagnosis, Therapies, and Future Directions.

To date, 3 clinical trials have shown symptomatic benefit from the use of intravenous (IV) iron in patients with heart failure (HF) with low serum iron. This has led to recommendations in support of the use of IV iron in this population. However, the systemic and cellular mechanisms of iron homeostasis in cardiomyocyte health and disease are distinct, complex, and poorly understood. Iron metabolism in HF appears dysregulated, but it is still unclear whether the changes are maladaptive and pathologic or compensatory and protective for the cardiomyocytes. The serum markers of iron deficiency in

Dietary iron supplementation modulates thyroid immune homeostasis and ameliorates experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in mice.

Background: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AITD) is a prevalent autoimmune disorder, and epidemiological evidence suggests that dietary iron intake is inversely associated with AITD risk. However, the functional role of dietary iron in modulating thyroid autoimmunity remains poorly understood. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary iron interventions on thyroid autoimmune responses and to explore the potential of iron supplementation as a nutritional strategy for AITD prevention. Methods: Female non-obese diabetic mice carrying the H-2h4 haplotype (NOD.H-2h4) mice were fed

Comparing iron sucrose and ferric carboxymaltose interactions with murine and human macrophages: Focus on the lysosomal compartment.

Intravenous iron drugs are commonly used in the treatment of iron deficiency/iron deficiency anaemia. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the uptake of these complexes remain poorly understood. This study examines the interaction of two iron complexes, iron sucrose and ferric-carboxymaltose, with murine J774A.1 and human M2a macrophages, focusing on their uptake and localization within lysosomal compartments at various time points: 45 min, 6 h, 24 h, and 5 days. We employed multiple analytical methods, including Prussian blue staining and transmission electron microscopy, to assess the

Meeting the Iron Needs of Low and Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

Low birth weight (LBW), defined as a birth weight of <2,500 g, affects 16% of all newborns and is a risk factor for impaired neurodevelopment as well as adverse cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes, including hypertension. LBW infants include both term, small for gestational age infants and preterm infants. Most LBW infants have only marginally LBW (2,000-2,500 g). Recent advances in neonatal care have significantly improved the survival of very LBW (VLBW) infants (<1,500 g). LBW infants are at high risk of iron deficiency due to low iron stores at birth and higher iron requirements due to ra

Oral and intravenous iron treatment in inflammatory bowel disease: hematological response and quality of life improvement.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of oral and intravenous iron treatment in anemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, considering both hematological and quality-of-life outcomes. METHODS: We performed a prospective multicenter study in IBD patients with iron deficiency anemia. Patients having hemoglobin >10 g/dL were prescribed oral ferrous sulfate. If hemoglobin <10 g/dL, intravenous (sucrose) iron was administered. Oral iron-intolerant patients were changed to intravenous treatment. Clinical (Truelove/Harvey-Bradshaw), hematological (response defined as

Iron Metabolism and Ferroptosis in Physiological and Pathological Pregnancy.

Iron is a vital element in nearly every living organism. During pregnancy, optimal iron concentration is essential for both maternal health and fetal development. As the barrier between the mother and fetus, placenta plays a pivotal role in mediating and regulating iron transport. Imbalances in iron metabolism correlate with severe adverse pregnancy outcomes. Like most other nutrients, iron exhibits a U-shaped risk curve. Apart from iron deficiency, iron overload is also dangerous since labile iron can generate reactive oxygen species, which leads to oxidative stress and activates ferroptosis.

Overexpression of the MexXY Multidrug Efflux System Correlates with Deficient Pyoverdine Production in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses a serious problem due to hospital- and healthcare-associated infections. A major drug resistance mechanism of P. aeruginosa involves active efflux via resistance nodulation cell division (RND)-type multidrug efflux pumps of which MexXY is increasingly recognized as a primary determinant of aminoglycoside resistance in P. aeruginosa. MexXY overexpression is often observed in drug-resistant P. aeruginosa clinical isolates. MexXY deficiency increased pyoverdine production in all four P. aeruginosa strains we tested. MexXY-overproducing multidrug-re

Effects of Pea (Pisum sativum) Prebiotics on Intestinal Iron-Related Proteins and Microbial Populations In Vivo (Gallus gallus).

Iron deficiency remains a public health challenge globally. Prebiotics have the potential to improve iron bioavailability by modulating intestinal bacterial population, increasing SCFA production, and stimulating expression of brush border membrane (BBM) iron transport proteins among iron-deficient populations. This study intended to investigate the potential effects of soluble extracts from the cotyledon and seed coat of three pea (Pisum sativum) varieties (CDC Striker, CDC Dakota, and CDC Meadow) on the expression of BBM iron-related proteins (DCYTB and DMT1) and populations of beneficial in

Role Of Intravenous Iron Over Nonsurgical Transfusions In Major Burns.

Anemia is a frequent condition in burn patients due to a mixture of blood loss and chronic inflammation. Transfusions increase the probability of serious infections and reduce overall survival, especially when unrelated to perioperative blood loss. Once the surgical phase in burn patients is completed, the role of parenteral iron administration in the reduction of subsequent transfusions is not well established. Burn patients subjected to at least two surgeries and presenting progressive anemia after concluding the surgical phase, without major symptoms, were selected (n=12). Those patients wi
