Assessing the Quantity and Quality of Language Used by Mothers and Fathers of Children with Down Syndrome During Shared Book Reading.

Young children with Down syndrome (DS) have language delays beginning early in life. Book reading with parents provides a context for capitalizing on language learning opportunities. This study evaluated the quantity and quality of language input among mothers and fathers of young children with DS during book reading interactions and investigated associations with child language. Findings revealed that mothers were more talkative and used more descriptive language, whereas fathers spent more time reading the book text. Moreover, maternal and paternal input were correlated with different measur…

Gesture-speech integration is related to vocabulary skills in children with developmental language disorder, Williams syndrome and typical development.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with developmental language disorder or Williams syndrome are reported to use more gestures than individuals with typical development. However, these two groups differ considerably in visuospatial and language skills, two skills that are hypothesized to shape gesture rate. AIMS: We first examined whether children with both developmental language disorder and children Williams syndrome do indeed use more gestures. Our second aim was to disentangle the role of vocabulary and visuospatial skills in the use of supplementary gestures (i.e., containing unique information). T…

The association of prenatal cocaine exposure with expressive and receptive language skills, phonological processing and reading ability at age 17.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has been associated with small but significant effects on language development in childhood and early adolescence. This study examined whether this association persists into later adolescence and what relationship language skills may have with reading proficiency in this population. METHODS: Enrolled were 338 (167 with PCE, 171 with NCE or no cocaine exposure) 17-year-olds recruited at birth who, together with their current caregiver, were seen as part of a 17-year follow-up. Participants were given assessments of reading achievement (WIAT-III), rece…

Speech in adults treated for unilateral cleft lip and palate as rated by naïve listeners, speech-language pathologists, and patients.

Speech may be affected in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Professional listeners, naïve listeners, and patients may perceive speech differently. The aim of the study was to assess speech among adults treated for unilateral CLP (UCLP) as rated by naïve listeners, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and self-assessment and to evaluate how well these ratings correlate. All patients with complete UCLP treated at the Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, in 1960-1987 were invited. A total of 73 of 109 patients (67%) participated, with a mean of 35 years since the initiation of tr…

Antenatal and neonatal risk factors in very preterm children were associated with language difficulties at 9 years of age.

AIM: This Finnish study compared language and reading abilities between schoolchildren born at a very low gestational age (VLGA) of <32 weeks and at term and analysed any associations between antenatal and neonatal risk factors and language skills in the VLGA group. METHODS: We prospectively followed 76 children born at a VLGA and 50 children born at term when they reached a mean age of 9.0 (8.1-10.0) years. They attended mainstream schools and had no severe neurosensory disabilities. Receptive language ability, rapid naming and word reading were evaluated using standardised tests. RESULTS: …

A plain language summary of the impact of vaccines against flu and chickenpox in people with multiple sclerosis treated with cladribine tablets.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: This is a summary of an article originally published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal. Cladribine tablets (MAVENCLAD®) are an oral (taken by mouth) medication, approved for the treatment of people with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS, with episodes of new or worsening symptoms). They are administered for a maximum of 10 days per year, over a period of 2 years. Cladribine tablets work by temporarily reducing the number of lymphocytes, which are immune cells that help to fight off infections. Because of this, people with MS (also called PwMS) may have conc

The challenges and facilitators to successful translation and adaptation of written self-report psychological measures into sign languages: A systematic review.

Deaf people are known to have significantly poorer reading comprehension skills when compared to their hearing counterparts. This poses significant threats to text-based psychological assessments. The plethora of text-based self-report measures available provides ample opportunity to translate/adapt existing tools from text to sign language. This paper systematically reviewed the challenges and facilitators faced in previous translations/adaptations with the view to inform recommendations for future practice. This paper reports the results of a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews …

But despite Dyslexia being a prime example of ling … rent-issue with ToM is caused by processing demands more associated to domains of cognition such as language, than to ToM itself. Addressing this possibility, study 2 additionally utilised the ToM30Q questionnaire, designed largely to circumvent issues related to language and memory. Neuroplasticity in post-stroke aphasia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of functional imaging studies of reorganization of language processing.

Recovery from aphasia is thought to depend on neural plasticity, that is, functional reorganization of surviving brain regions such that they take on new or expanded roles in language processing. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of all articles published between 1995 and early 2020 that have described functional imaging studies of six or more individuals with post-stroke aphasia, and have reported analyses bearing on neuroplasticity of language processing. Each study was characterized and appraised in detail, with particular attention to three critically important methodolo…

Speech-Language pathologists' decisions when designing an aided AAC display for a compilation case study of a beginning communicator.

PURPOSE: The current study sought to identify decisions speech-language pathologists (SLPs) make and their rationale for those decisions when designing an AAC display for a hypothetical school-aged child who was a beginning communicator. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays support communicative interactions for children who are unable to use spoken language to meet their communication needs. Children who are at the early stages of learning language, often termed beginning or emerging communicators, may rely heavily on the AAC display to support comprehension and expressio…

Supporting people with post-stroke aphasia to live well: A cross-sectional survey of Speech & Language Therapists in Ireland.

Living well with post-stroke aphasia is supported by responsive, collaborative heath and related services, aphasia information and training for people with aphasia (PWA) and their social networks, and opportunities to contribute and participate autonomously in their communities. Several international surveys indicate shortcomings in the provision of long-term support and, in Ireland, while there is a lack of data around service provision for PWA, there is evidence that post-acute stroke services are fragmented and under-resourced. The aim of this study was to survey Speech & Language Therapist…

Decoding and word recognition in English as a native and a foreign language in students with and without dyslexia (English vs. Polish students).

We aimed to investigate the relationship between reading difficulties in native language (NL: Polish) and English as a foreign language in dyslexia in English and Polish students, respectively, and to develop a model of relations between NL phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, verbal short-term memory, and reading in English. Thirteen English students with dyslexia (ED), 15 without (END) and 16 Polish students with dyslexia (PD) and 16 without (PND) participated. We found that dyslexic deficits and different phoneme-to-grapheme correspondence rules between Polish and English inter…

Probing Phonological Processing Differences in Nonword Repetition for Children with Separate or Co-occurring Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder.

We assessed nonword repetition (NWR) skills in 7-9 year-old children with dyslexia (dyslexia-only), developmental language disorder (DLD-only), co-occurring DLD+dyslexia, and typical development (TD) with a norm-referenced and an experimental task. The experimental task manipulated phonemic variability (dissimilarity among consonant phonemes within the nonword) and presentation modality (audio-only versus audiovisual) to probe potential phonological processing differences among the groups. Across tasks, the dyslexia-only and DLD-only groups performed similarly to each other and intermediately …

Parent couples' participation in speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States.

This study examined parent couples' participation in and satisfaction with speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States. Responses from 40 father-mother couples (n = 80 parents) were examined across therapy components (i.e. parent-therapist communication, assessment, planning, and intervention). Descriptive frequencies, chi-square tests, intraclass correlations, and dyadic multilevel modeling were used to examine participation across fathers and mothers and within parent couples. Compared to mothers, fathers communicated less with therapist…
