When findings hurt: Mental health effects of cerebral MRI screening in patients with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Brain MRI is increasingly used for screening purposes, yet the psychological impact of such screening remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the psychological consequences of screening in patients with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), specifically focusing on the association between abnormal imaging findings and depressive symptoms. METHODS: In this prospective study, 202 HHT patients were invited to complete the Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) at baseline and three months after MRI screening; 140 completed both assessments. MRI r

Effects of monoclonal antibody therapies on depression in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BackgroundDepression in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) is common, disabling and difficult to treat. Pathological protein deposition in PD and AD has been associated with late-life depression, and inflammatory and vascular changes have been proposed as key mechanisms underlying depression in neurodegenerative disorders. Monoclonal antibody therapies (mAbs) effectively clear pathological protein aggregates in PD and AD but are associated with cerebral inflammation and microvascular damage.ObjectiveWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether mAb

Bronchoscopic deployment and implantation of Diffusing alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy into the lung and mediastinum for treatment of lung cancer: a pre-clinical safety and feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is a standard treatment modality in cancer therapy, particularly for lung cancer. Diffusing alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy sources (hereafter, "Alpha DaRTs") are fixed with Ra-244 (half-life =3.6 days) that releases alpha-emitting atoms into the tumor tissue to an effective range of a few millimeters. METHODS: The feasibility, usability, and safety of Alpha DaRTs deployment and implantation via bronchoscopy into the lung parenchyma and mediastinum in a big animal model of healthy swine was studied in two phases: (I) inert and (II) active Alpha DaRTs deployment. Maternal separation in mice leads to anxiety-like/aggressive behavior and increases immunoreactivity for glutamic acid decarboxylase and parvalbumin in the adolescence ventral hippocampus.

It has been reported that stressful events in early life influence behavior in adulthood and are associated with different psychiatric disorders, such as major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorder. Maternal separation (MS) is a representative animal model for reproducing childhood stress. It is used as an animal model for depression, and has well-known effects, such as increasing anxiety behavior and causing abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This study investigated the effect of MS on anxiety or aggression-like behavio

Sub-groups (profiles) of individuals experiencing post-traumatic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Some people experience post-traumatic growth (PTG), entailing positive changes such as a greater appreciation of life following traumatic events. We examined PTG in the context of the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, notably working from home and social distancing. We aimed to assess whether distinct sub-groups (profiles) of individuals experiencing PTG could be identified by how they appraised and coped with the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: For this cross-sectional study, we used convenience sampling. In total, 951 participants from the general population completed an

The pleiotropic neuroprotective effects of resveratrol in cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease pathology: From antioxidant to epigenetic therapy.

While the elderly segment of the population continues growing in importance, neurodegenerative diseases increase exponentially. Lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, and education, among others, influence ageing progression, throughout life. Notably, the Central Nervous System (CNS) can benefit from nutritional strategies and dietary interventions that prevent signs of senescence, such as cognitive decline or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's Disease. The dietary polyphenol Resveratrol (RV) possesses antioxidant and cytoprotective effects, producin

Delivery factors and neonatal thyroid hormone levels: a systematic review.

Postnatal thyroid hormone changes enable the neonate to be adapted for postnatal life. Several factors can affect this adaption. In this review, we summarized the studies that reported the association among the delivery factors and neonatal thyroid hormones and thyroid stimulating hormone. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to March 2020, to identify the studies investigating the relationship between delivery factors, especially the mode of delivery and labor pain, and neonatal thyroid hormones and TSH. Finally, in this review study, of 157

Pathophysiology and consequences of arterial stiffness in children with chronic kidney disease.

Changes in arterial structure and function are seen early in the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and have been causally associated with cardiovascular (CV) morbidity. Numerous potential injuries encompassing both traditional and uremia-specific CV risk factors can induce structural arterial changes and accelerate arterial stiffening. When the buffering capacity of the normally elastic arteries is reduced, damage to vulnerable microcirculatory beds can occur. Moreover, the resultant increase to cardiac afterload contributes to the development of left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac d

Pleural manometry in patients with pleural diseases - the usefulness in clinical practice.

Although pleural manometry is a relatively simple medical procedure it is only occasionally used to follow pleural pressure (Ppl) changes during a therapeutic thoracentesis and pneumothorax drainage. As some studies showed that pleural pressure monitoring might be associated with significant advantages, pleural manometry has been increasingly evaluated in the last decade. The major clinical applications of pleural pressure measurements include: the prevention of complications associated with large volume thoracentesis, diagnosis and differentiation between various types of an unexpandable lung

Automated Pupillometry and Detection of Clinical Transtentorial Brain Herniation: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Transtentorial herniation (TTH) is a life-threatening neurologic condition that typically results from expansion of supratentorial mass lesions. A change in bedside pupillary examination is central to the clinical diagnosis of TTH. Materials and. METHODS: To quantify the changes in the pupillary examination that precede and accompany TTH and its treatment, we evaluated 12 episodes of herniation in three patients with supratentorial mass lesions using automated pupillometry (NeurOptics, Inc., Irvine, CA). Herniation was defined clinically by the onset of fixed and dilated pupils

Pathogenesis of Intestinal Fibrosis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Perspectives for Therapeutic Implication.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal fibrosis with stricture formation is a common feature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and leads to a significantly impaired quality of life in affected patients, intestinal obstruction as well as to the need for surgical intervention. This constitutes a major treatment challenge. Key Messages: Fibrosis results from the response of gut tissue to the insult inflicted by chronic inflammation. Similarly to what occurs in other organs, the underlying fibrogenic mechanisms are complex and dynamic, involving multiple cell types, interrelated cellular events, and a large num

Update on clinical and mechanistic aspects of paraneoplastic syndromes.

Many patients with cancer are afflicted with an array of severe ailments caused by remote effects of the neoplasm on distant organs, which it has not invaded or colonized. The growing local tumor dominates attention, but invisible chemical and cellular components released by this parasitic neoplastic growth can operate below the threshold of detection to derange feedback loops coordinating essential physiological functions. Ultimately, these changes cause serious signs and symptoms, collectively described as paraneoplastic syndromes (PNSs), which significantly diminish the patient's quality of

Major causes of antiviral drug resistance and implications for treatment of hepatitis B virus monoinfection and coinfection with HIV.

The two key events in the life-cycle of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) involve (1) the generation from viral genomic DNA of the covalently closed circular DNA transcriptional template, and (2) the reverse transcription of the viral pregenomic RNA to form the HBV DNA genome. Diversity in the HBV genome is ensured by the low fidelity of the viral reverse transcriptase (rt). Particular selection pressures such as antiviral therapy readily select out escape mutants from this pre-existing quasispecies pool. Antiviral drug resistance in chronic hepatitis B can be caused by many factors, including the v

CNS manifestations of Fabry's disease.

BACKGROUND: Fabry's disease is a rare hereditary lysosomal storage disease with multiorgan involvement. Deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A activity leads to accumulation of neutral glycosphingolipids, especially in vascular endothelial and smooth-muscle cells. Along with progressive renal and cardiac dysfunction, stroke is a major and often life-threatening burden of the disease. Cerebral vasculopathy, confirmed by neuropathological, neuroradiological, and functional studies, occurs commonly and leads to ischaemic cerebrovascular events at an early age. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS: Fabry's disease i
