Alopecia universalis, a variant of alopecia areata, is a disease of unknown etiology, though evidence for an autoimmune etiology continues to mount. We report an HIV-positive patient with altered T-lymphocyte subsets in whom alopecia universalis developed. We describe an autopsy case of Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with an increased count of suppressor T lymphocytes. This case was distinct from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. BACKGROUND: Despite the excellent responses to imatinib therapy observed in patients with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia, approximately 25% of patients display primary resistance or suboptimal response. The OCT-1 activity in mononuclear cells reflects the efficiency of active influx of imatinib. OCT-1 activity in mononuclear cells is highly variable between patients and significantly correlates with a patient's molecular response to imatinib treatment and overall survival. The present study examined whether cell lineage and BCR-ABL expression influenced OCT-1 activity.

A total of 13 cancer patients were treated with Adoptive Chemoimmunotherapy (ACIT) using alloactivated HLA haploidentical lymphocytes. Donor lymphocytes were activated in vitro using a pool of irradiated allogeneic lymphocytes (MLC-cells) and some further expanded by culturing in T-cell growth factor (TCGF-cells).
