This paper describes a study designed to test the cognitive-attentional model of panic. This model suggests that attention to internal sensations is likely to increase misinterpretation of them as representing a serious threat to health, which in turn might increase anxiety. In the present study, instructions for internal attentional focus were predicted to increase symptom reporting, anxiety, and catastrophic symptom attributions. Two groups, patients diagnosed with panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) and normal controls, watched a stressful film; half of each group was asked to attend to t

The "personal characteristics" and "extreme event" hypotheses have been proposed as alternative explanations for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among combat veterans. The person-event interaction model attempts to integrate both perspectives by hypothesizing that premilitary individual vulnerability characteristics play a greater role in influencing risk of PTSD or PTSD symptom severity at lower than at higher levels of exposure to traumatic combat stressors. Focusing on a sample of 57 Vietnam veterans undergoing inpatient treatment for diagnosed PTSD, we assessed this

Student stress prediction requires models that are both accurate and interpretable. This study proposes GRPF-PPN, a Gated Residual Prototype-Fusion Psycho-Prototypical Network for classifying student stress from psychometric tabular data. The model combines feature-wise gating, residual representation learning, class-associated prototypes, and neural-prototype fusion to provide both discriminative predictions and case-comparison evidence. Across 10 repeated stratified splits of the main Student Stress dataset, GRPF-PPN achieved an accuracy of 0.929 ± 0.012, a Macro-F1 of 0.932 ± 0.013, a balan

Anxiety and insomnia are highly comorbid; however, the underlying brain-circuit mechanisms remain inadequately explored. Here, we identify a dual-functional ensemble within the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) that modulates both anxiety-like behaviors and insomnia through distinct neural circuits. Specifically, a subset of BNST neurons exhibits enhanced activity in response to anxiety-related cues and during wakefulness. Activation of these ensemble neurons exacerbates anxiety-like behaviors and reduces non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in chronic restraint stress (CRS) mice. Conv

This study examined associations between aggression and constructs from the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in a sample of 87 incarcerated adult men. Participants completed self-report measures of personality functioning (Criterion A), pathological personality traits (Criterion B), aggression, and impression management. Pearson correlations indicated that overall personality impairment and multiple pathological traits were significantly associated with aggression. In multivariable regression models, Hostility emerged as the most robust unique predictor of aggression, while o

OBJECTIVE: Childhood trauma has been demonstrated to have severe adverse effects on lifespan. Although research has explored the link between childhood trauma and depression, fewer studies have examined this relationship specifically in the context of emerging adulthood. To address this gap, the present study aimed to further investigate the relationship between childhood trauma and depression in emerging adults and explore the roles of derailment and future time perspective.
METHOD: A total of 3,553 college students were recruited from Beijing, China. Participants completed a series of self-

A neurocomputational model of the Basal Ganglia and Dopamine dynamics is used to investigate different factors that affect behavioral adaptation and flexibility in healthy and pathological subjects. Results show that high tonic dopamine levels, as those occurring in Parkinsonian subjects under levodopa treatment, can impair flexibility. A high learning rate makes adaptation quicker but also increases the vulnerability towards random punishments. Finally, a high exploration capacity (simulated by increasing the noise level) improves learning in the first epochs of a task but has a detrimental e

The goal of this study was to evaluate whether personality disorder prototypes derived from three different models have similar pathological trait profiles within the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). Trainee clinicians (N = 329) rated a patient they were currently treating using the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure, the DSM-5 hybrid model prototype match (modified from the original prototype DSM-5 proposal) and the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual prototype match. Correlations among each PD prototype model with the DSM-5 traits were assessed. Theoretically similar prototype

Melasma is a recurrent and treatment-resistant hyperpigmentation disorder characterized by a complex and multifactorial pathogenesis. However, the lack of a stable and reliable animal model has hindered systematic investigations into its onset and progression. In this study, we established a melasma-like model in C57BL/6J mice by combining broadband UVB irradiation, intramuscular progesterone administration, and induced emotional stress. The affected skin areas exhibited irregular, brown hyperpigmented patches. Histopathological analysis revealed an accumulation of melanin granules in the epid

Persistence is the capacity to sustain goal-oriented behavior despite recurring obstacles and setbacks. Recent studies have underscored the importance of this attribute as an integral facet of resilience and a protective factor against depression. In animal models, persistence is commonly examined through operant paradigms, wherein it is operationalized as resistance to the extinction of reward-directed actions. However, these methods are labor-intensive and resource-demanding, prompting questions about their efficiency in exploring the biological underpinnings of persistence and evaluating ph

BACKGROUND: Due to the growing gap between the demand and supply of therapeutic services for people suffering from depression, with this study, we are investigating the effectiveness and factors of influence of new approaches in group treatments for depression. Two previous studies have already identified bouldering psychotherapy (BPT) as an effective option. It combines psychotherapeutic interventions with action- and body-oriented bouldering exercises. Mental model therapy (MMT) is a new cognitive-behavioral approach for treating depression. It focuses on identifying cognitive distortions, b

OBJECTIVES: Numerous studies show that a high level of psychopathic traits in youth is related to the propensity to use various types and forms of aggression. The presented study focuses on the relations between psychopathy and aggression, both indirect (relational) and direct in this age group. The triarchic model of psychopathy was used, according to which psychopathy is described as a configuration of boldness, meanness and disinhibition. It was assumed that boldness would be a predictor for indirect aggression and disinhibition - for the direct forms of aggressive behaviors.

Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disease, and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Currently, studies on the pathogenesis of depression are mainly focused on the brain. The liver can modulate brain function via the liver-brain axis, indicating that the liver plays an important role in the development of depression. This study aims to explore the protective effect of quercetin against chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced metabolic changes and the corresponding mechanisms in the rat liver based on untargeted metabolomics technology. In this study, 96 male rats were divided

To be effective in the prevention of adolescent problem gambling, it is fundamental to enhance knowledge about the antecedents of gambling problem severity and the mechanisms through which these dimensions are related to problematic gambling behavior. This study aimed at testing how selected cognitive (correct knowledge of gambling and gambling-related cognitive distortions) and affective (positive economic perception of gambling and expectation and enjoyment and arousal towards gambling) variables are related to gambling frequency and gambling problem severity. Problem gambling was conceptual

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common anxiety disorder characterized by a marked fear of social situations. Treatments for SAD, including exposure therapy and medication, are not satisfactory for all patients. This has led to the development of several paradigms to study social fear in rodents. However, there are still some social impairments observed in SAD patients that have never been examined in rodent models. Indeed, social situations avoided by SAD patients include not only social interactions but also public performances and being observed by others. Nevertheless, tests used to asse
