Acute infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) associated with acute brachial neuritis and exanthematous rash.

Clinical descriptions of acute or primary infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are rare. Among cases previously reported, most describe an acute illness resembling infectious mononucleosis. We describe the case of a 32-year-old homosexual man with an acute illness associated with strong serologic evidence of a primary infection with HIV. This case illustrates two new clinical features: an acute, bilateral brachial neuritis, and a vesicular, pustular exanthematous and enanthematous rash. Studies of HIV-related serologic results show differential sensitivities for enzyme-linked

Isolated hypoglossal paralysis.

A 5 year old girl suffering from chronic tonsillitis and bilateral tympanic effusion developed atrophy of the right half of the tongue. With the exception of the twelfth cranial nerve (right) no neurological signs could be detected. We are reporting a case of an isolated hypoglossal nerve paralysis.

First report of mosaic trisomy 12 in a liveborn individual.

Trisomy 12 mosaicism was found in a 36-year-old woman with minor anomalies, neuromuscular abnormalities, and moderate mental retardation. Trisomy 12 was present in 13% of the lymphocytes but not in skin fibroblasts. Previous reports of dup (12p) and dup(12q) are reviewed. To our knowledge this is the first report of a "complete" trisomy 12 in a liveborn individual.

[Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia (authors transl)].

The case of a 16-year-old boy with progressive external ophthalmoplegia ("Ophthalmoplegia plus") is reported. Clinical symptoms consisted of complete external ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, short stature, atrophy and weakness of skeletal muscles, and elevated csf protein. Abnormal mitochondria were found by electron microscopy in scattered atrophic fibres of the muscle biopsy. The syndrome and it's relevance for paediatric differential diagnosis is discussed.

[Congenital centronuclear myopathy. Two morphological variants in one family (author's transl)].

This report deals with a family in which the mother and her two daughters suffer from a congenital, slowly progressive neuromuscular disease. Histological, histochemical and ultrastructural observations of the mother's muscle biopsy reveal the characteristics of the centronuclear myopathy. In this case central nuclei and pericentronuclear abnormalities of muscle fibers are found in almost all fibers. Biopsies obtained of the two daughters show alterations especially of type I-fibers, which often are smaller than normal. The presence of these two forms of centronuclear myopathy in one family in

Distinct subtypes of type I fibers of human skeletal muscle.

We have identified two distinct and consistent type I fiber subtypes in histochemically normal biopsies (vastus lateralis or biceps brachialis) from 12 healthy persons, both sexes, ages 15 to 42. The type I fibers were uniformly light with the regular ATPase (9.4) and uniformly dark with the acid-preincubated reverse ATPase reactions. However, the subtype IA fibers were stained darker than subtype IB fibers with the nicotinamide adenine nucleotide dehydrogenase-tetrazolium reductase, Oil red O, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-tetrazolium reductase, nonspecific esterase, suc
