Machine learning-based prediction of aerodynamic performance in arformoterol-lactose dry powder inhaler formulations using surface roughness features.

Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are widely used for pulmonary drug delivery, and their aerodynamic performance is highly dependent on particle surface morphology. This paper presents a machine learning-based framework to quantitatively predict DPI aerodynamic behavior using surface roughness parameters from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Ten DPI formulations were prepared with various storage conditions and compositions. Thirteen surface roughness features were extracted using ImageJ and SurfCharJ and used as inputs for predictive models, including multilayer perceptrons (MLPs), support

Explainable AI unravels sepsis heterogeneity via coagulation-inflammation profiles for prognosis and stratification.

Sepsis is a leading cause of hospital mortality, and its significant heterogeneity complicates prognosis and stratification. To address this challenge, we developed an explainable artificial intelligence prognostic model (SepsisFormer, a transformer-based neural network) and an automated risk-stratification tool (SMART) for sepsis. In a multi-center retrospective study of 12,408 sepsis patients, SepsisFormer achieved high predictive accuracy (AUC: 0.9301, sensitivity: 0.9346, and specificity: 0.8312). SMART (AUC: 0.7360) surpassed most established scoring systems. Seven coagulation-inflammator

Analysis of frailty status and its influencing factors in maintenance hemodialysis patients based on the health ecological model.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a significant public health concern in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients.Previous studies have predominantly focused on isolated risk factors, lacking a comprehensive framework to address its multifactorial nature. This study aims to systematically investigate the prevalence and determinants of frailty in MHD patients using the Health Ecological Model (HEM), which integrates five ecological tiers—individual traits, behavioral characteristics, interpersonal networks, living and working conditions, and policy environment—and to develop a backpropagation neural networ

Exploring the potential of cell-free RNA and Pyramid Scene Parsing Network for early preeclampsia screening.

BACKGROUND: Circulating cell-free RNA (cfRNA) is gaining recognition as an effective biomarker for the early detection of preeclampsia (PE). However, the current methods for selecting disease-specific biomarkers are often inefficient and typically one-dimensional. PURPOSE: This study introduces a Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (PSPNet) model to predict PE, aiming to improve early risk assessment using cfRNA profiles. METHODS: The theoretical maximum Preeclamptic Risk Index (PRI) of patients clinically diagnosed with PE is defined as "1", and the control group (NP) is defined as "0", referred

Advanced Fetal Cardiac Disease Detection Using Optimized Gegenbauer Graph Neural Networks on Ultrasound Images to Facilitate Early Diagnosis and Clinical Assessment.

Early detection of fetal cardiac diseases can dramatically improve neonatal outcomes by enabling timely intervention and informed clinical management. However, accurate diagnosis remains challenging due to the complexity of fetal heart structures in ultrasound images and the subtlety of congenital anomalies. To address these challenges, this work introduces Fetal Cardiac Disease Detection Using Ultrasound Imaging with Gegenbauer Graph Neural Networks (FCD-UI-GGNN). Ultrasound images are collected from the Fetal Phantom Ultrasound Dataset 23 (FPUS23) and pre-processed using Broad Collaborative

Prediction of lower limb joint stiffness and optimization of anthropometric parameters in countermovement jump using an anthropometry-informed neural network.

BACKGROUND: The Countermovement Jump (CMJ) test, widely used to assess athletes' musculoskeletal and neuromuscular readiness, hinges on the performance of the hip, knee, and ankle joints. Despite extensive research, there is no consensus on which joint is most critical for CMJ performance. This study aims to identify the primary lower limb joint contributing to CMJ execution by analyzing maximum energy production and peak stiffness. Additionally, a novel neural network model was developed to predict joint stiffness during CMJ based on jump height and detailed anthropometric parameters, includi

Incorporating computer vision on smart phone photographs into screening for inflammatory arthritis: results from an Indian patient cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are increasingly used to classify medical images, but few studies utilize smartphone photographs. The objective of this study was to assess CNNs for differentiating patients from controls and detecting joint inflammation. METHODS: We included consecutive patients with early inflammatory arthritis and healthy controls, all examined by a rheumatologist (15% by two). Standardized hand photographs of the hands were taken, anonymized and cropped around joints. Pre-trained CNN models were fine-tuned on our dataset (80% training; 20% test set). We use

Detection of antibodies in suspected autoimmune encephalitis diseases using machine learning.

In our study, we aim to predict the antibody serostatus of patients with suspected autoimmune encephalitis (AE) using machine learning based on pre-contrast T2-weighted MR images acquired at symptom onset. A confirmation of seropositivity is of great importance for a reliable diagnosis in suspected AE cases. The cohort used in our study comprises 98 patients diagnosed with AE. 57 of these patients had previously tested positive for autoantibodies associated with AE. In contrast, no antibodies were detected in the remaining 41 patients. A manual bilateral segmentation of the hippocampus was per

Machine learning-based prognostic prediction and surgical guidance for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

The prognosis following radical surgery for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is poor, and optimal follow-up strategies remain unclear, with ongoing debates regarding anatomic resection (AR) versus non-anatomic resection (NAR). This study included 680 patients from five hospitals, comparing a combination of eight feature screening methods and 11 machine learning algorithms to predict prognosis and construct integrated models. These models were assessed using nested cross-validation and various datasets, benchmarked against TNM stage and performance status. Evaluation metrics such as area u

Federated Learning for Predicting Postoperative Remission of Patients with Acromegaly: A Multicentered Study.

BACKGROUND: Decentralized federated learning (DFL) may serve as a useful framework for machine learning (ML) tasks in multicentered studies, maximizing the use of clinical data without data sharing. We aim to propose the first workflow of DFL for ML tasks in multicentered studies, which can be as powerful as those using centralized data. METHODS: A DFL workflow was developed with 4 steps: registration, local computation, model update, and inspection. A total of 598 participants with acromegaly from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and 120 participants from Xuanwu Hospital were enrolled.

Enhancing Autism Detection Through Gaze Analysis Using Eye Tracking Sensors and Data Attribution with Distillation in Deep Neural Networks.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and repetitive behaviors, often associated with atypical visual attention patterns. In this paper, the Gaze-Based Autism Classifier (GBAC) is proposed, which is a Deep Neural Network model that leverages both data distillation and data attribution techniques to enhance ASD classification accuracy and explainability. Using data sampled by eye tracking sensors, the model identifies unique gaze behaviors linked to ASD and applies an explainability technique called TracIn for data

A new fusion strategy for rapid strain differentiation based on MALDI-TOF MS and Raman spectra.

Typing of bacterial subspecies is urgently needed for the diagnosis and efficient treatment during disease outbreaks. Physicochemical spectroscopy can provide a rapid analysis but its identification accuracy is still far from satisfactory. Herein, a novel feature-extractor-based fusion-assisted machine learning strategy has been developed for high accuracy and rapid strain differentiation using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Raman spectroscopy. Based on this fusion approach, rapid and reliable identification and analysis can be p

Discovering 3D hidden elasticity in isotropic and transversely isotropic materials with physics-informed UNets.

Three-dimensional variation in structural components or fiber alignments results in complex mechanical property distribution in tissues and biomaterials. In this paper, we use a physics-informed UNet-based neural network model (El-UNet) to discover the three-dimensional (3D) internal composition and space-dependent material properties of heterogeneous isotropic and transversely isotropic materials without a priori knowledge of the composition. We then show the capabilities of El-UNet by validating against data obtained from finite-element simulations of two soft tissues, namely, brain tissue a

Predicting the need for intubation within 3 h in the neonatal intensive care unit using a multimodal deep neural network.

Respiratory distress is a common chief complaint in neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Despite the increasing use of non-invasive ventilation in neonates with respiratory difficulty, some of them require advanced airway support. Delayed intubation is associated with increased morbidity, particularly in urgent unplanned cases. Early and accurate prediction of the need for intubation may provide more time for preparation and increase safety margins by avoiding the late intubation at high-risk infants. This study aimed to predict the need for intubation within 3 h in neonates
