The pathology of the pancreas is sometimes related to the embryological development of the organ. The first part of this paper is a presentation of the embryology, morphogenesis and cytogenesis of the pancreas. A tentative classification is then proposed to group together the lesions directly related to anomalies of the position and differentiation of the pancreatic buds. The gross surgical pathologic features of the aortic valve were reviewed in 374 patients who had had clinically pure aortic stenosis and aortic valve replacement at our institution during the years 1965, 1970, 1975, and 1980. The most common cause of aortic stenosis, accounting for 46% of our cases, was calcification of a congenitally bicuspid valve. In the remainder, stenosis was produced by postinflammatory fibrocalcific disease (including rheumatic disease) in 35%, by degenerative calcification of an aging valve in 10%, and by calcification of a congenitally unicommissural valve in 6%. Malignant tumors of the nasopharynx were analyzed by region of origin and route of spread. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas produced early submucosal infiltration of the deglutitional muscle layer with enlargement of the levator palati muscle and lateral displacement of the parapharyngeal space. Serous otitis media was frequently associated, and the trigeminal nerve was occasionally involved. Intracranial extension via the foramen lacerum was frequent. Metastases to the infratemporal fossa produced early involvement of the masticatory muscle layer with medial displacement of the parapharyngeal space.

Immunoreactive ACTH has been found in human pituitary and plasma under different molecular forms: Big ACTH, intermediate ACTH, ACTH 1-39 and fragments of ACTH. In the literature, there are some controversies especially regarding to the importance of Big ACTH in plasma and tissue. Big ACTH is absent or present in only low amounts in plasma and pituitary extracts from normal subjects. However, the proportion of Big ACTH is very high in tumor extracts and plasma obtained from patients with ectopic ACTH syndrome High concentrations of small ACTH fragments are also present in this syndrome.

Five cases of eosinophil lung are reported in which the fungus responsible for the affection was not Aspergillus. Documented data include reports on 19 similar cases with a clinical picture suggestive of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis but with negative tests for Aspergillus. Microscopic lesions in cattle infected with the virus of the Neethling form of lumpy skin disease comprised a granulomatous reaction in the dermis and hypodermis which extended to the surrounding tissue. Two cases of granulomatous prostatitis are reported. The essential pathological and clinical features of the syndrome are discussed. It is emphasized that in case of enlargement and induration of the prostate and fusion of the organ with adjacent structures, differentiation of granulomatous prostatitis from prostatic cancer is not possible without biopsy.

During a five years period 8 newborns on 2035 admissions developed septic arthritis representing a very low incidence of 4%. Umbilical catheters were used in 3 patients. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent etiologic agent and in 6/8 cases blood cultures were positive for the same pathogen agent. Because of the paucity of clinical signs in the first period in the sick neonate, detection of the disorder by the radiologist assumes great importance in the neonatal intensive care unit, as early recognition and therapy may prevent residual deformity.

Hereditary canine spinal muscular atrophy is a dominantly inherited lower motor neuron disease with three phenotypic variants: accelerated, intermediate, and chronic. In relation to 170 pancreatic and bile duct neoplasms confirmed by histology, the radiological signs were correlated to anatomical findings. The roentgenograms were analysed with regard to diagnostic accuracy, size of tumor and operability. 13 319 autopsies of the same period were screened in order to ascertain false positive and as well false negative findings in ERPC. Pancreatic tumors with a diameter over 3 cm were correctly found by ERPC in 98,4%, tumors below 3 cm in diameter in 75%. The over-all diagnostic accuracy for malignant tumors was 90,0%.
