Utilizing ultrasound findings of a single indicator joint to assess non-systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) has been used worldwide in adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but is beginning to play an increasing role in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The aim of this study was to investigate the application of MSUS findings of a single indicator joint in JIA to assess the disease activity and classify disease subtype. METHODS: Thirty-five non-systemic JIA patients with a total of 62 visits were retrospectively recruited in this study. Among the involved joints, the joint with highest value of grey-scale (GS) plus power Doppler

Targeting Low Disease Activity in Elderly-Onset Rheumatoid Arthritis: Current and Future Roles of Biological Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs.

Elderly rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is classified into two clinical subsets, elderly-onset RA (EORA) and younger-onset elderly RA. With the improvement of life expectancy in the general population and advent of the super-aging society, the number of patients with EORA is anticipated to increase. Both large and small joints are affected initially at onset, and individuals with early EORA have higher scores of disease activity and levels of acute-phase reactants than those with early younger-onset RA. EORA is a progressive disease similar to younger-onset RA. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors

[Refractive laser eye surgery and binocular vision disorders--case report].

UNLABELLED: Laser refractive surgery is a lively developing branch of ophthalmology. There are a numbers of contraindications for this type of surgery, but many of them are difficult to define, for example binocular vision impairment. Accurate analysis of orthoptic examination before refractive surgery, has forced us to dissuade our patient from refractive surgery, despite the fact that there were no other contraindications. CASE STUDY: A 33 years old woman referred for refractive surgery because of bilateral myopia (right eye: -5.25 Dsph -0.75 Dcyl ax. 170; left eye: -5.0 Dsph). There was no

Effectiveness of multifocal intraocular lenses to correct presbyopia after cataract surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Although monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are effective in improving vision after cataract surgery, the loss of accommodation is not restored by implantation of these IOLs. Because multifocal IOLs may improve uncorrected distance and near vision, we compared the clinical outcome and patient satisfaction after implantation of monofocal and multifocal IOLs. Sociodemographics, eagerness for spectacle independence (ESI), and neuroticism were tested as predictors of satisfaction. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. PARTICIPANTS: Cataract patients with no ocular comorbidity were opera
