Is GP-patient communication related to their perceptions of illness severity, coping and social support?

The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between the communicative behaviour of general practitioner and patient on the one hand and the perception of the coping behaviour of the patient, the severity of the complaint and the presence of social support on the other hand. From 20 general practitioners (GP), 15 consultations per GP were videotaped and analysed using the Roter Interaction Analysis System. Doctors and patients rated their perceptions on questionnaires. The finding was that doctors and patients used predominantly task-oriented (instrumental) behaviour, with some excepti…

Functional asymmetry in the human face: perception of health in the left and right sides of the face.

The expression of health on the human face, like beauty or emotions, is an important biological display. Previous findings of left-right functional asymmetry in facial attractiveness and the linkage of attractiveness and health in evolutionary biology notions have prompted the present study. A total of 38 pairs of left-left and right-right facial composites were viewed by 24 subjects on a computer screen, and the task was to decide which member of the pair looked healthier or there was no difference. The results revealed a significant interaction between face side and sex of face. Right-right

Risk of Lyme disease: perceptions of residents of a Lone Star tick-infested community.

BACKGROUND: Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) have been suggested as a vector of the agent of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu … feri or any other pathogen antigens. CONCLUSION: The residents of Gibson Island had an exaggerated perception of the risk of Lyme disease because they were intensely infested with an aggressively human-biting and irritating nonvector tick. In addition, a Lyme disease mimic of undescribed etiology (named Masters' disease) seems to be associated with Lone Sta …

Perceptions of denial among pregnant and parenting chemically dependent women enrolled in treatment.

This study combined both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to examine the perceptions of denial in a sample of pregnant and parenting chemically dependent women enrolled in treatment. Interview data revealed that the women in the study had no trouble recognizing denial as a negative influence on the recovery process and were highly critical of denial behaviors displayed by other women in treatment. Learning opportunities, such as special focus groups (e.g., denial recognition, anger management), were identified by participants as the most helpful strategies utilized by treatment staff…

Lymphatic filariasis related perceptions and practices on the coast of Ghana: implications for prevention and control.

A qualitative study to investigate lymphatic filariasis related perceptions and practices that may be relevant for the design of appropriate health education and control programmes was conducted in four endemic villages in coastal Ghana. The villagers were aware of the common manifestations of filariasis, such as adenolymphangitis (ADL), lymphoedema, elephantiasis and hydrocele, which were specifically described with local terminology. ADL attacks were identified as the most dreaded health problem in the communities, and elephantiasis and hydrocele also ranked high in importance among reported…

Perceptions of alcohol-related attendances in accident and emergency departments in England: a national survey.

The results from a survey, conducted in February and March 1997, of all Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments in England are presented. The survey examined staff perceptions of the preventive role of A&E departments in screening and intervention in alcohol-related attendances. Perceptions of the prevalence of alcohol-related attendances were also included. Attitudes towards developing a preventive response were positive. Few departments currently screen or offer intervention and considerable barriers to the implementation of a preventive response were reported.

Percept-genesis of the mother-child separation theme among panic and asthma patients.

A stimulus portraying a mother figure who is leaving a baby alone on the floor (Separation Theme) was presented tachistoscopically at increasing exposure times, according to the method of the Defense Mechanism Test, to three sex-matched groups of 31 normal subjects, 31 patients with bronchial asthma, and 31 patients with Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia. The frequency of several codings was significantly higher in both clinical groups compared with normal controls. Asthma patients were characterized by reports of the child seen as a statue and of contact or fusion between mother and child. Agora

Homework compliance, perceptions of control, and outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment of social phobia.

This study examined the relationship of compliance with homework assignments and posttreatment anxiety in patients who received cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia. Greater homework compliance measured in the first and latter periods of CBGT was associated with lower levels of social interactional anxiety after treatment. Surprisingly, homework compliance during the middle sessions of CBGT was positively related to posttreatment fears of scrutiny and criticism. Perceptions of control in social phobia and their potential effect on homework compliance and the homework com…

Patient perceptions regarding the risks of morbidity and complications of lower third molar removal.

The risks associated with third molar surgery are well established. Current philosophy stresses co-development of treatment plans with patients, who need to understand the complications and risks of possible treatment. This understanding was therefore investigated at an initial outpatient appointment (n = 91) after a verbal explanation and immediately prior to surgery (n = 73), by means of visual analogue scales to assess patients' perceptions of the likelihood of each outcome. Most patients (98 percent) responding at an initial appointment (t1) felt that they had been given enough information…

Vaginal birth after cesarean section: an update on physician trends and patient perceptions.

The increased number of women having a vaginal birth after a cesarean section can be attributed to changing physician trends. Women eligible for vaginal birth after cesarean section include those with previous low vertical incisions, multiple previous incisions and even unknown scars, regardless of the method of closure or previous indication. Limited data suggest that in carefully selected women a current twin gestation, breech presentation, or the presence of fetal macrosomia are not contraindications for a trial of labor, in the presence of a uterine scar. Changing trends in the management

Performance of students with learning disabilities on validity indexes of the Perception of Ability Scale for Students.

The present study examined the performance of 78 students with learning disabilities and 71 normally achieving students in regular Form 1 (Grade 6) classes on three validity indexes of the Perception of Ability Scale for Students, a measure of academic self-concept. The three indexes assess consistency of responding, negative or positive response biases, and misrepresentation of self-perceptions in terms of unrealistic perceptions of perfection in school. Analysis showed that learning disabled students obtained significantly lower Full Scale scores than the normal students, but no significant …

The effect of congenital deafness on cerebral asymmetry in the perception of emotional and non-emotional faces.

Functional hemispheric specialization in recognizing faces expressing emotions was investigated in 18 normal hearing and 18 congenitally deaf children aged 13-14 years. Three kinds of faces were presented: happy, to express positive emotions, sad, to express negative emotions, and neutral. The subjects' task was to recognize the test face exposed for 20 msec in the left or right visual field. The subjects answered by pointing at the exposed stimulus on the response card that contained three different faces. The errors committed in expositions of faces in the left and right visual field were an

Physicians' perceptions about increased glove-wearing in response to risk of HIV infection.

Glove-wearing attitudes of 375 physicians, representing 56% of all physicians surveyed, were ascertained. Although the majority were comfortable with their current glove use, 33% preferred wearing them more frequently. The most common reasons for not wearing gloves were a low likelihood of disease transmission and fear of offending patients. Many physicians felt that more frequent glove use in examining human immunodeficiency virus- (HIV)-positive patients might reduce rapport and diminish the adequacy of physical examination procedures, but only 11% felt that increased glove use would comprom

Impact of a drug bulletin on the knowledge, perception of drug utility, and prescribing behavior of physicians.

The impact of a drug bulletin was tested in a randomized controlled trial that included 186 family physicians. The length of the trial was six months. It was hypothesized that printed information, such as in drug bulletins, influences physician prescribing behavior by changing their knowledge of drug efficacy and adverse effects and their perceptions of drug utility. Therefore, the impact of a drug bulletin was evaluated on these domains of influence. Interview data were used to assess changes in knowledge, perceived drug utility, and stated prescribing. Health insurance funds' records were us…

Parent perceptions of problems experienced by their children in complying with treatments for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Parents of children with chronic diseases, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), are responsible for insuring that their children comply with medical regimens. Assessing the perceptions parents have of problems their children experience in complying with treatment would be useful in advising them of how to help their children. In this study, a questionnaire assessing the frequency and type of problems children experienced in complying with treatments of JRA was completed by 37 parents. The parents reported more problems with range of motion exercises and splint wearing than with medicat…
