Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is progression of the primary cancer to the peritoneum that is seen in only 1.2% of patients with lung cancer. It is associated with poor prognosis especially if present at the time of initial cancer diagnosis. The predisposing factors for peritoneal spread are not yet well understood. It has been suggested that the oncogene status of the tumour can influence the patterns of metastatic spread. There is not enough data about the role of c-ROS oncogene 1 (ROS1) mutation in the development of PC in non-small cell lung cancer. Here, we describe a case of a 56-year-ol

Primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC) is an epithelial tumor that arises from the peritoneum. On histopathologic analysis, it resembles a malignant ovarian surface epithelial stromal tumor. A 62-year-old woman visited the emergency room with low abdominal pain. Peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer was initially suspected and underwent radical hysterectomy, both salpingo-oophorectomy and omentectomy. Both ovaries and uterus were intact, and ultimate diagnosis was PPSC. PPSC is a rare disease that is difficult to diagnose prior to surgery. We suspected peritoneal carcinomatosis due

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a health problem reaching epidemic proportions. There is no cure for CKD, and patients may progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a current replacement therapy option for ESRD patients until renal transplantation can be achieved. One important problem in long-term PD patients is peritoneal membrane failure. The mechanisms involved in peritoneal damage include activation of the inflammatory and immune responses, associated with submesothelial immune infiltrates, angiogenesis, loss of the mesothelial layer due to cell death and mes

The presence of ambient particulate matter (PM) poses more dangers to human health than that of other common air pollutants such as Carbon dioxide (Co2) and ozone. Epidemiologic studies show a direct correlation between PM and the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The immune system seems to play a critical role in the process of these diseases. The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of Tehran particulate matter in two aerodynamic diameters (PM2.5 and PM10) on alveolar macrophages (AM) from C57/BL6 mice. To evaluate the inflammatory effects of PMs, cultured al

Tuberculosis constitutes an important health problem, affecting one third of the world's population. The pulmonary localization is the most frequent one, being rare the peritoneal presentation. Clinical manifestations are non-specific so the diagnosis requires a high level of suspicion. The case of a 13-year-old teenager hospitalized for peritoneal tuberculosis is reported. The objective is to describe a rare form of extra-pulmonary manifestation of M. tuberculosis infection in the pediatric age and to sensitize the medical community, in the current epidemiological context, to the reemergence

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) for rural patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is convenient, efficient, and durable. However, patients with a history of previous abdominal surgeries or peritonitis are at an increased risk of PD malfunction. This case highlights the impact of securing the catheter to the abdominal wall laparoscopically to keep the PD catheter in an adhesion-free area to maintain patency and function in a patient with extensive intraperitoneal adhesions.
SUBJECT: A 76-year-old white male was on PD which later was complicated with peritonitis and sepsis and subsequ…

PURPOSE: Detection of peritoneal metastases (PM) is key in the staging and management of gastrointestinal and ovarian cancer patients. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the diagnostic performance of CT, PET(CT), and (DW)MRI in detecting PM.
METHODS: A literature search in Pubmed, Embase (Ovid), and Scopus was performed (January 1997-May 2018) to identify studies reporting on the accuracy of imaging PM in the diagnostic workup of gastrointestinal or ovarian cancers. Inclusion criteria were region-based or patient-based studies comprising > 15 patients, surgery/histology/radiol

Catheter erosion into the small bowel is an uncommonly reported complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). This can result in peritonitis, sepsis, fistula formation, and mortality. We report a 29-year-old female with end-stage renal disease presenting with nausea, profuse diarrhea immediately after dialysate instillation, change in color and odor of the dialysis output, and pain at the site of her peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter. After a thorough evaluation, catheter tip erosion into the patient's small bowel lumen was diagnosed. This was confirmed when a blue bowel mo…

Peritoneal loose bodies (PLBs) have been sparingly documented within the surgical and radiologic literature, with 38 cases reported to date. A 67-year-old male presented to urology for the management of an asymmetric prostatic nodule. Imaging incidentally identified a well-circumscribed mass of low T2 signal intensity with a small fatty core in the left lower quadrant close to the sigmoid colon; malignancy was in the differential. The mass grew slightly over the next year. A diagnostic laparoscopy retrieved a free floating 4 × 4 cm benign mass from the pelvis, identified as necrotic fat with a

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the abdomen is currently the imaging examination of choice for the staging and follow-up of ovarian carcinoma (OC). Peritoneal metastases (PMs) represent the most common pathway for the metastatic spread of OC. MDCT scanners, due to several advantages-including increased volume coverage, reduced scanning time, acquisition of thin slices and creation of multiplanar reformations, and three-dimensional reconstructions-provide useful information regarding the early and accurate detection of PMs. Detailed mapping of peritoneal carcinomatosis is feasible,

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that can infect all nucleated cells through active invasion. Some non-canonical pathways for T. gondii infection of macrophages have recently been reported. We report a new mode of T. gondii invasion using a time-lapse imaging system, in which T. gondii tachyzoites are engulfed by a tube-like structure on peritoneal macrophage phagosomes and then escape from the phagosomes. Escaped parasites re-invade macrophages through intercellular junctions between their apical end and host cell membranes. We call this invasion pathway of T.

Malignant triton tumor (MTT) is a rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) histologically defined by rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. MTTs are primarily found in the head, neck, extremities and trunk, but rare cases of MTT within the buttock, the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum have also been documented. We present the case of a 47-year-old male patient who initially presented with right flank pain and hematuria in July 2019, who was found to have a large pelvic mass below peritoneal reflection. Complete resection of the mass was performed, and pathology identifie

OBJECTIVE: Leiomyosarcoma and ovarian cancer are often diagnosed late due to the absence of initial symptoms. Patients seek help when abdominal distension occurs; this is associated with pelvic tumor and carcinomatosis. Initial imaging often reveals pelvic tumors with diffuse abdominal nodules; however, this imaging could be misleading, such as in the cases of splenosis.
CASE REPORT: A female presented with vaginal bleeding at our outpatient department. Serum CA125 level was elevated. Abdominal and pelvic CT showed multiple uterine masses and left adnexal cysts with peritoneal nodules. Leiomy

BACKGROUND: Miyazaki syndrome is overshunting-associated myelopathy, which is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt. We present the first case of Miyazaki syndrome caused by cystoperitoneal (CP) shunt for an arachnoid cyst (AC) in this report.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 42-year-old man with 12-year progressive spastic paraplegia, who underwent CP shunt for an AC at the age of 15 years. Although few findings suggested overshunting on symptoms and head computed tomography, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed the engorgement of the cervical spinal epidu
