OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of infection with HIV in young offenders in Scotland and to obtain information about related risk factors and previous tests for HIV.
DESIGN: Voluntary anonymous study with subjects giving saliva samples for testing for HIV and completing questionnaires about risk factors.
SETTING: Polmont Young Offenders' Institution near Falkirk, Scotland.
SUBJECTS: 421 of 424 available male prisoners in Polmont. The questionnaires of 17 of the prisoners were excluded because of inaccuracies.

The Israeli Prison Services implemented a hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination program in 2020. Inmates considered high risk for HCV were offered serology; HCV-seropositive participants were offered HCV RNA testing. Among participants, 7.0% had detectable HCV RNA and were offered antiviral drug therapy. This program reduced HCV burden among incarcerated persons.

This study was conducted in Nowy Wiśnicz, with prisoners sentenced for: murders, sex crimes, theft and robbery, maintenance, bullying. A Polish adaptation of PAI test, made by the author of the study, was used. The study results and its statistical analysis showed characteristic personality features of particular criminal groups can be used in rehabilitation of disturbed people, addicts, and become the basis for preparing actions reducing frequency of committing crimes.

To assess Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the cause of Lyme borreliosis) seropositivity in Germany, we tested serum samples from health survey (2008-2011) participants. Seroprevalence was 5.8% among women and 13.0% among men; infection risk was highest among persons >60 years of age. Public health interventions, including education about risk factors and preventive measures, are needed.

On 13 April 2011 the medical service of a French military parachuting unit reported an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis involving 147 persons among the military personnel. Meals suspected to have caused the outbreak (pasta and some raw vegetables) were tested for norovirus by PCR. The same norovirus (genogroup I) was found in some of the food items consumed by the cases and in a cook who prepared the meals.

Samples submitted for a suspect of chronic lymphocytic leukemia are the most frequently observed in flow cytometry laboratories. These cases require not only a precise and prompt diagnosis but also an evaluation on the possibility of performing additional prognostic tests. We will propose two sequential flow cytometry panels and a personal opinion on how to manage these samples for both diagnostic and prognostic assessment, taking into account the published guidelines and recommendations.

A case is reported of lethal septicemic melioidosis due to Pseudomonas pseudomallei in a 40-year-old woman who had been in India. The epidemiology, clinical findings and management of this unusual disease are discussed. The diagnostic value of serological tests and in vitro sensitivity of Pseudomonas pseudomallei to various antibiotics are outlined. Melioidosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any febrile condition in a person returning from a tropical country.

During clinical testing of the administration of ganglion-blocking agents by inhalation (175 persons) it was established that drug aerosols of arfonad and hygronium possess high effectiveness, act rapidly, and are relatively safe. The inhalation method of the management of hypertensive crises may find wide use in out-patient practice, under conditions of the admission room, cardiological and resuscitation departments, as well as in obstetrics when controlled hypotension is necessary.

Winter clothing provides insulation for almost all of a person's body, but in most situations, a person's face remains uncovered even in cold windy weather. This exploratory study used thermal imagery to record the rate of cooling of the faces of volunteers in a range of winter air temperatures and wind speeds. We test whether adverse childhood experiences - exposure to parental maltreatment and its indirect effect on health - are associated with age 30 personality traits. We use rich longitudinal data from a large, representative cohort of young US Americans and exploit differences across siblings to control for the confounding influences of shared environmental and genetic factors.
