MICA and NLRP3 gene polymorphisms interact synergistically affecting the risk of ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoinflammatory disease that affects the sacroiliac joints, causing stiffness and pain in the back. MICA is a ligand of the NKG2D receptor, and an increase in its expression affects the immune response in various diseases. NLRP3 is a multiprotein complex that promotes the release of IL-1β, but its role in AS has been minimally explored. The objective of this study was to analyze the association and interaction of polymorphic variants of the MICA and NLRP3 genes in patients with AS. In this case-control study, patients with AS were included and compared with h

A novel association between COMT and BDNF gene polymorphisms and likelihood of symptomatic dysphagia in older people.

BACKGROUND: Catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are neuro-modulatory proteins that have been demonstrated to affect cortical plasticity, which in turn has been shown to affect age-related changes and neuronal functioning in humans. Here, we tested the hypothesis that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) within COMT and BDNF genes are associated with dysphagia in older adults. METHODS: A total of 800 community-dwelling older individuals were sent the Sydney Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Questionnaire to identify swallowing difficulties. DNA from this po

An assessment of the impact of host polymorphisms on Plasmodium falciparum var gene expression patterns among Kenyan children.

BACKGROUND: Host genotype accounts for a component of the variability in susceptibility to childhood Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, despite numerous examples of host polymorphisms associated with tolerance or resistance to infection, direct evidence for an impact of host genetic polymorphisms on the in vivo parasite population is difficult to obtain. Parasite molecules whose expression is most likely to be associated with such adaptation are those that are directly involved in the host-parasite interaction. A prime candidate is the family of parasite var gene-encoded molecules on P. f

Association of interleukin 18, interleukin 2, and tumor necrosis factor polymorphisms with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive inflammatory and degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The measles virus (MV) and host and environmental factors are involved in the development of SSPE, but the precise mechanism by which the MV causes SSPE is still unknown. Studies have indicated that in SSPE patients, specific polymorphisms of certain genes are most likely involved in impairing the host's ability to eradicate the MV. The purpose of our study was to elucidate the role of polymorphisms in the genes encoding interleukin (IL)-2, IL-18, and tumor necrosis

Histologic characterization of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with and without myofilament mutations.

BACKGROUND: Between 30% and 60% of clinical cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) can be attributed to mutations in the genes encoding cardiac myofilament proteins. Interestingly, it appears that the likelihood of an underlying myofilament mutation can be predicted by echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular morphology. However, it is not known whether genotypically characterized HC exists as a separate entity with discrete phenotypic morphology and histology or to what extent recognized polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) influence this relationship. Distribution and effect of apo A-IV genotype on plasma lipid and apolipoprotein levels in a Chinese population.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertriglyceridaemia has been recognized as an independent risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. Apolipoprotein A-IV (apo A-IV) plays an important role in the metabolism of TG-rich lipoproteins and HDL. However, the role of the polymorphism of the apo A-IV gene in hyperlipidaemia remains to be fully determined. The impact of the genetic variant in the apolipoprotein A-IV gene on lipid risk factor profiles for coronary heart disease was examined in Chinese patients with type-IV hyperlipoproteinaemia (HTG) and in healthy control individuals. METHODS: We genotyp
