Results of a screening tool for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are associated with neuropsychological and behavioral measures.

PURPOSE: This study assessed whether the outcome of a screening tool for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), the FASD-Tree, was associated with neuropsychological and behavioral outcomes. METHODS: Data for this study were collected as part of the fourth phase of the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD-4). Participants (N = 175, 5 to 16 years) with or without histories of prenatal alcohol exposure were recruited from San Diego and Minneapolis. Each participant was screened using the FASD-Tree and administered a neuropsychological test battery; parents or g

Differentiating the associations between sleep quality and suicide behaviors: A population-based study in China.

BACKGROUND: Although the association between sleep problems and suicidal behaviors were found in many studies, their associations are not built until now. One of the reasons may be the identified differences among different suicide behaviors, which also implied that sleep quality may play different roles on these suicidal behaviors. However, absent study explores the possible distinguishing associations between sleep quality and different suicidal behaviors. METHODS: This is a population-based study conducted in Hebei province, China. Totally, 21,376 valid questionnaires were analyzed in this

Behavioral features in young adults with FG syndrome (Opitz-Kaveggia syndrome).

Opitz and Kaveggia [Opitz and Kaveggia (1974); Z Kinderheilkd 117:1-18] reported on a family of five affected males with distinctive facial appearance, mental retardation, macrocephaly, imperforate anus, and hypotonia. Risheg et al. [Risheg et al. (2007); Nature Genetics 39:451-453] identified an identical mutation (p.R961W) in MED12 in six families with Opitz-Kaveggia syndrome, including a surviving affected man from the original family reported in 1974. The previously described behavior phenotype of hyperactivity, affability, and excessive talkativeness is very frequent in young boys with FG

Prevalence of non-testing for HIV and associated factors among young women in Sub-Saharan africa: a multilevel analysis of DHS 2020-2024.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing services are crucial in preventing the spread of the virus and providing care for those infected. Despite the decline in the number of newly infected people, HIV/AIDS remains a major public health problem in Africa. Being aware of one's HIV status is linked to reduced risk and changes in behavior. Individuals who are newly diagnosed with HIV can quickly be linked to antiretroviral therapy (ART), as well as care and support service. METHODS: Data from the recent Demographic and Health Surveys were used for analysis. The study used a total of 82,361 young women. The dete

[Impact of parenting behavior relevant to infant's sleep on maternal sleep and health].

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is affected by infant's sleep problems like night awakening or bedtime difficulties. Previous studies indicated that infant's sleep problems are affected by particular parenting behaviour (hereinafter referred to as parenting). However, the relation between maternal sleep and infant's sleep has been unclear and there is only limited information on the interaction between parenting, infant's sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal health. The purpose of this study was: 1. to examine the relationship between infant's sleep problems and maternal sleep and health; and 2. to

From data to action: the FRAME conceptual framework for translating consumer wearable feedback into behavior change support.

BACKGROUND: Consumer wearables are now widely used across health promotion, wellness, and recreational fitness. Although wearable-supported interventions can improve physical activity and related outcomes, effects are typically modest, heterogeneous, and more consistent when devices are embedded within broader behavior change support rather than used alone. In applied settings, however, wearable use often remains focused on metric display and passive monitoring, leaving practitioners without a clear framework for translating data into behaviorally meaningful support. OBJECTIVE: This paper pro

Burnout as an obstacle to parenting in families at risk of child abuse or neglect: Associations unique from parent mental health symptoms and child externalizing.

BACKGROUND: Parental burnout refers to exhaustion, emotional distancing from children, and an arc of decline in parenting capacity. Although burnout is known to be elevated among parents of children with externalizing problems, there has been little investigation of the unique role of burnout in parenting practices. OBJECTIVE: To determine if parental burnout - unique from parents' mental health symptoms and children's externalizing behaviors - relates to more negative and less positive self-reported parenting behaviors. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The participants were 140 Australian caregive

Adolescent mothers and their children in later life.

The popular belief that early childbearing almost certainly leads to school dropout, subsequent unwanted births and economic dependence is greatly oversimplified, if not seriously distorted: A longitudinal study of over 300 primarily urban black women who gave birth as adolescents in the middle to late 1960s shows that a substantial majority completed high school, found regular employment and, even if they had at some point been on welfare, eventually managed to escape dependence on public assistance. Relatively few ended up with large families; most had fewer births than they had wanted or ex

Modulating task-outcome value to mitigate real-world procrastination via noninvasive brain stimulation.

Procrastination is a prevalent behavioral problem associated with individual health and societal productivity. A leading model posits that procrastination reflects an imbalance between task aversiveness and the pursuit of positive task outcomes, yet this theoretical framework has neither been validated in real-world settings nor effectively applied to guide interventions. To address this gap, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial. Adults with chronic procrastination received seven sessions of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the left

Lateral septum-lateral hypothalamus circuit dysfunction in comorbid pain and anxiety.

Pain and anxiety comorbidities are a common health problem, but the neural mechanisms underlying comorbidity remain unclear. We propose that comorbidity implies that similar brain regions and neural circuits, with the lateral septum (LS) as a major candidate, process pain and anxiety. From results of behavioral and neurophysiological experiments combined with selective LS manipulation in mice, we find that LS GABAergic neurons were critical for both pain and anxiety. Selective activation of LS GABAergic neurons induced hyperalgesia and anxiety-like behaviors. In contrast, selective inhibition
