Barriers and Enablers for the Use of Digital Interactive Television in Nursing Home Settings: An Interview Case Study with Older Adults and Professionals.

Increasingly, public health programs are recommending the use of information and communication technologies to address the psychosocial needs of Older Adults (OAs). Recently, several applications that allow access to communication and stimulation functionalities using digital interactive television (DiTV) have been developed. The use of the television interface to access digital services seems to help meet several accessibility and usability needs of OAs. However, its use entails other challenges related to different dimensions (organizational, technological, ethical, etc.). This study aims to

Thyroid dysfunction in children and adolescents affected by undernourished and overnourished eating disorders.

Eating disorders (ED) are one of the most prevalent chronic disorders in adolescents and young adults, with a significantly increasing prevalence in younger children, particularly in girls. Even if obesity in essence is not framed as an eating disorder and has always been considered a separate pathology, ED and obesity could be considered part of a continuum. It has become evident that one condition can lead to another, such as binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa, and that they share the same repercussions in terms of psychosocial, metabolic, and nutritional health. This narrative

HIV Infection in Adults: Initial Management.

The HIV epidemic is an important public health priority. Transmissions continue to occur despite effective therapies that make HIV preventable and treatable. Approximately one-half of people with HIV are not receiving suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). Starting ART early, followed by continuous lifetime treatment, most effectively achieves durable virologic suppression and restoration of immune function that can improve clinical outcomes and prevent transmission to partners who are seronegative. National treatment guidelines include ART options that can be offered immediately after diag

Strategies for Optimizing Growth in Children With Chronic Kidney Disease.

Growth failure is a hallmark in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, early diagnosis and adequate management of growth failure is of utmost importance in these patients. The risk of severe growth retardation is the higher the younger the child is, which places an additional burden on patients and their families and hampers the psychosocial integration of these children. Careful monitoring of growth, and effective interventions are mandatory to prevent and treat growth failure in children with CKD at all ages and all stages of kidney failure. Early intervention is critical, as

Patient-Centered Care in Psoriatic Arthritis-A Perspective on Inflammation, Disease Activity, and Psychosocial Factors.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a seronegative spondyloarthropathy characterized by skin lesions, dactylitis, and enthesitis. Patients with PsA suffer from a variety of psychosocial difficulties and nonspecific symptoms early on in the disease course and continue to experience progressive disease due to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms initially viewed as somatization could lead to undertreatment and promote psychological distress, poor coping, and negative patient-provider relationships. Pain and fatigue are important complaints that affect the patient's perception and may need to be

Immunoneuropsychiatry - novel perspectives on brain disorders.

Immune processes have a vital role in CNS homeostasis, resilience and brain reserve. Our cognitive and social abilities rely on a highly sensitive and fine-tuned equilibrium of immune responses that involve both innate and adaptive immunity. Autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, infection and psychosocial stress can tip the scales towards disruption of higher-order networks. However, not only classical neuroinflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis, are caused by immune dysregulation that affects CNS function. Recent insight indicates that similar processes ar

Health-related quality of life questionnaire for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOSQ-50): a psychometric study with the Serbian version.

This study aimed to analyze the measurement properties of the Health-related quality of life questionnaire for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOSQ-50) in a sample of Serbian women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Seventy-six women with PCOS from an endocrinology clinic and 28 healthy women participated between October 2016 and March 2017. The measure was rigorously translated and culturally adapted into Serbian. Psychometric evaluation included descriptive analysis, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient), test-retest reliability (intraclass-correlation coefficient - ICC) and co

Asthma severity, nature or nurture: genetic determinants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the progress in the search for the genetic determinants of severe asthma. RECENT FINDINGS: Twin studies estimate that approximately 25% of the phenotypic variability in asthma severity is determined by genetic factors, with the remainder determined by nongenetic factors including environmental and psychosocial factors, behavioral traits, and comorbidities. Most genetic association studies of asthma severity performed to date are underpowered and not designed to clearly distinguish asthma severity variants from asthma susceptibility variants. However, th

The juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (JFMS): a poorly defined disorder.

Juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (JFMS) is a chronic condition characterized by symptoms of chronic diffuse musculoskeletal pain and multiple painful tender points on palpation. It is often accompanied by fatigue, disorders of sleep, chronic headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and subjective soft tissue swelling. The complexity of the presenting clinical picture in JPFS has not been sufficiently defined in the literature. Similarities to adult fibromyalgia syndrome in JFMS are often difficult to compare, because many of the symptoms are "medically unexplained" and often overlap frequently with

Oxytocin and Eating Disorders: A Narrative Review on Emerging Findings and Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamic neuropeptide oxytocin regulates reproductive behavior and mother-infant interaction, and conclusive studies in humans indicate that oxytocin is also a potent modulator of psychosocial function. Pilot experiments have yielded first evidence that this neuropeptide moreover influences eating behavior. METHODS: We briefly summarize currently available studies on the involvement of the oxytocin system in the pathophysiology of eating disorders, as well as on the effects of oxytocin administration in patients with these disorders. RESULTS: Brain administration of oxyto

Primary facial reanimation in head and neck cancer.

Facial Paralysis (FP) profoundly impairs the life of individuals, both functionally and psychosocially. Surgical approaches to treat this condition are myriad, but the ultimate goal is to restore symmetry and movement. Ablative surgery for tumors of the head and neck region are amongst the most common etiologies causing FP and this group of patients represents unique challenges. Surgical defects may have multiple competing reconstructive requirements and addressing the FP must be considered in this context. Furthermore, extent of disease, patient age, duration of preceding paralysis, adjuvant

Timing and Outcome Concerns regarding Feminizing Genitoplasty from the Perspective of Egyptian Families of Girls with Virilized External Genitalia.

BACKGROUND: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia in females leads to virilization of external genitalia and persistent urogenital sinus. There are controversies regarding the timing and outcomes of surgery. Deferring surgeries beyond childhood is difficult to implement in conservative societies, and may result in stigmatization and distress to individuals with disorders of sexual differentiation and their families. METHODS: Thirty girls with virilization due to congenital adrenal hyperplasia were admitted for single-stage feminizing genitoplasty, between 2011 and 2014. We prospectively studied the
