Lack of type XVIII collagen results in anterior ocular defects.

Mice lacking type XVIII collagen have defects in the posterior part of the eye, including delayed regression of the hyaloid vasculature and poor outgrowth of the retinal vessels. We report here that these mice also have a fragile iris and develop atrophy of the ciliary body. The irises of Col18a1-/- mice can be seen to adhere to the lens and cornea. After the pupils begin to function, the double layer of epithelial cells separates at the apical cell contacts, leading to defoliation of its posterior pigment epithelial cell layer, and extracellular material begins to accumulate in the basement m…

Primary open-angle glaucoma patients characterized by ocular vasospasm demonstrate a different ocular vascular response to timolol versus betaxolol.

We evaluated the retrobulbar response to a selective versus nonselective beta blocker in a subgroup of primary open-angle glaucoma patients (POAG) characterized by ocular vasospasm. Eleven patients who exhibited ocular vasospasm (i.e. a significant increase in ophthalmic artery blood flow velocity or a significant decrease in ophthalmic artery resistance index during hypercapnia) underwent medication washout for 4 weeks and were enrolled in a double-masked cross-over study (betaxolol versus timolol). Patients were evaluated for blood flow velocity of the retrobulbar vessels using color Doppler

Morphological study of the cataractous lens of the senescence accelerated mouse.

A murine model of accelerated aging, the senescence accelerated mouse (SAM), has been developed. There are three accelerated senescence-resi … he number of rippled rings increased with age. These changes later induced refractive distortion of retinal vessels. Whole-mount flat preparations of the epithelium showed that the number of cells was markedly decreased at the advanced stages of cataract. At the late stages of life the lens cortex became liquefied and developed into a mature cataract. Cataract fo …

HLA DR and DQ distribution in normal human ocular structures.

HLA DR and DQ distribution was investigated in normal human ocular tissues, together with class I antigens and immunocompetent cell subsets, by immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase procedures. In the anterior segment, our findings, consistent with those of previous reports, showed the wide distribution of class I antigens, specially in the corneal epithelium, while class II antigens were restricted to very rare cells scattered in the conjunctiva, the peripheral cornea and the stroma of the ciliary processes. Some non pigmented epithelial cells of the ciliary processes were HLA DR and DQ pos

Fetal alcohol syndrome.

Significant alcohol ingestion during pregnancy can cause a spectrum of malformation of various degrees of severity in offspring. The full ex … Low-incidence anomalies include corneal opacities (Peters anomaly in one), cataract, tortuosity of retinal vessels, and long eyelashes. Our findings plus many observations in the literature establish that children with fetal alcohol syndrome are at considerable risk for a variety of eye problems.

Accuracy of Using Generative Adversarial Networks for Glaucoma Detection: Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma leads to irreversible blindness. Globally, it is the second most common retinal disease that leads to blindness, slightly less common than cataracts. Therefore, there is a great need to avoid the silent growth of this disease using recently developed generative adversarial networks (GANs). OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to introduce a GAN technology for the diagnosis of eye disorders, particularly glaucoma. This paper illustrates deep adversarial learning as a potential diagnostic tool and the challenges involved in its implementation. This study describes and analyzes many o

Autophagy-mediated activation of the AIM2 inflammasome enhances M1 polarization of microglia and exacerbates retinal neovascularization.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal neovascularization (RNV) disease that is characterized by abnormal blood vessel development in the retina. Importantly, the etiology of ROP remains understudied. We re-analyzed previously published single-cell data and discovered a strong correlation between microglia and RNV diseases, particularly ROP. Subsequently, we found that reactive oxygen species reduced autophagy-dependent protein degradation of absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) in hypoxic BV2 cells, leading to increased AIM2 protein accumulation. Furthermore, we engineered AIM2 knockout mice an

Phloroglucinol and dieckol isolated from Ecklonia cava suppress impaired diabetic angiogenesis; A study of in-vitro and in-vivo.

Abnormalities in angiogenesis that are associated with diabetes may contribute to vascular complications and result in disabilities and death. Furthermore, an imbalance in angiogenesis in different tissues, including the retina and kidney, can play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic microvascular complications. Phlorotannins, such as phloroglucinol (PG) and dieckol (DK), which are found in Ecklonia cava exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that improve endothelial function in hypertension. However, reports on the effects of these compounds on diabetes-induced angiogenesis i

A coarse-to-fine deep learning framework for optic disc segmentation in fundus images.

Accurate segmentation of the optic disc (OD) depicted on color fundus images may aid in the early detection and quantitative diagnosis of retinal diseases, such as glaucoma and optic atrophy. In this study, we proposed a coarse-to-fine deep learning framework on the basis of a classical convolutional neural network (CNN), known as the U-net model, to accurately identify the optic disc. This network was trained separately on color fundus images and their grayscale vessel density maps, leading to two different segmentation results from the entire image. We combined the results using an overlap s

CADASIL mimicking multiple sclerosis: The importance of clinical and MRI red flags.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an inherited small vessel disease, manifesting as recurrent ischaemic events, migraine with aura, behavioural disturbance and cognitive decline. We report two patients with CADASIL masquerading as multiple sclerosis (MS). A 23year old female presented with a visual scotoma and was discovered to have a corresponding retinal cotton wool spot. MRI brain revealed diffuse T2 hyperintensities suggestive of demyelination. A 56year old male presented with transient sequential paraesthesia, initially

Translating ocular biomechanics into clinical practice: current state and future prospects.

Biomechanics is the study of the relationship between forces and function in living organisms and is thought to play a critical role in a significant number of ophthalmic disorders. This is not surprising, as the eye is a pressure vessel that requires a delicate balance of forces to maintain its homeostasis. Over the past few decades, basic science research in ophthalmology mostly confirmed that ocular biomechanics could explain in part the mechanisms involved in almost all major ophthalmic disorders such as optic nerve head neuropathies, angle closure, ametropia, presbyopia, cataract, corneal

Anti-angiogenic activities of hypericin in vivo: potential for ophthalmologic applications.

Hypericin, a perihydroxylated dianthraquinone is shown here to be a highly potent inhibitor of angiogenesis in several ocular models examined in rat eyes. Extensive angiogenesis induced in the cornea and iris by intra-ocular administration of FGF-2 was effectively inhibited by a minimum of four dose regimens of hypericin (2 mg/kg) administered via the intraperitoneal route at 48 h intervals. Maximal inhibition was achieved when animal treatment with hypericin was initiated 48 h prior to inoculation of FGF-2. The molecular basis for the hypericin-mediated inhibition of angiogenesis in the anter

[Microalbuminuria: a therapeutic goal in patients with type 2 diabetes].

UNLABELLED: MICROALBUMINURIA: According to the ANAES recommendations, search for microalbuminuria is a priority for monitoring patients with type 2 diabetes. The term microalbuminuria should be reserved for patients with a urinary albumin in the range of 20 to 200 micrograms/ml, i.e. 30-300 mg/24 h. BY TYPE OF DIABETES: In type 1 diabetes, microalbuminuria is an expression of early-stage glomerulopathy which induces secondary hypertension and subsequent aggravation of the renal disease. In type 2 diabetes, microalbuminuria is also an expression of altered renal function but most importantly a

[Ocular findings in Fabry's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Fabry's disease is a recessive X-linked disorder that results from a deficiency of the lysosomal hydrolase a-galactosidase A (alpha-Gal A). The absence of alpha-Gal A enzyme activity leads to accumulation of glycosphingolipid globotryaosyl ceramide (GL-3) in the lysosomes of a variety of cell types. Subsequently, angiokeratoma and ocular signs develop until, in most cases after the third decade of life, severe renal dysfunction or cardiomyopathy becomes obvious. Corneal opacities (cornea verticillata) occur in 90% conjunctival vascular changes in 60%, retinal vessel tortuosity in
