Gendered socioeconomic impacts of emerging infectious diseases: Insights from a mixed-methods study in Guinea.

This study examines the gendered socioeconomic impacts of infectious disease outbreaks, including both epidemics (e.g., yellow fever, Ebola, Marburg and Mpox) and pandemics (e.g., COVID-19), on populations in Guinea, using data from the Decentralize and Operationalize One Health Platforms (DOPERAUS) project. A mixed-methods approach combined quantitative survey data (N = 906) from participants aged 18 and over and qualitative data from an open-ended questionnaire answered by 508 respondents to capture both measurable outcomes and nuanced experiences. Sampling accounted for gender, age, and vul

Causal Discovery Analysis Reveals Insights into Psychosis Proneness, Brain Function, and Environmental Factors among Young Individuals.

Experiencing mild symptoms of psychosis, like delusions and hallucinations, occurs sometimes in general, nonclinical populations, often termed psychosis proneness (PP), potentially part of the psychosis continuum. Understanding the neural and environmental factors contributing to PP in young individuals during critical developmental periods remains unclear. We aimed to explore these directional relationships using causal discovery analysis (CDA). Participants were 194 healthy adolescent and young adult twin and sibling pairs aged between 14-24 years. They completed comprehensive assessments ev

Resilient outcomes in people with a history of mental disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic: an international 2-years longitudinal prospective study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the global population was exposed to a significant psychological stress, which had an impact on the mental health in individuals with pre-existing mental disorders. Despite their heightened vulnerability, subgroups within this population demonstrated resilient outcomes throughout the pandemic. This study aims to identify predictors of long-term, sustained resilient outcomes among people with a history of mental disorder during the first two years of the pandemic. METHODS: In this international 2-year, 5-wave longitudinal online survey, the Patient Hea

Current Predictors of Revision at Time of Primary Rhinoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Before primary rhinoplasty, it is crucial to identify patients whose concerns may not be adequately addressed by surgery. In 1999, Gorney and Martello introduced SIMON to describe patients who may be unsatisfied: single, immature, male, overly expectant, and narcissistic. This paper advocates for an evidence-based mnemonic to enhance patient selection. METHODS: TriNetX database medical records were queried for patients who underwent primary rhinoplasty at least three years ago at ≥ 15 years old. A Cox proportional hazards model quantified relationships between 115 patient variable

Differential use of antidiabetic medication related to income, cohabitation and area of residence: a Swedish nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to antidiabetic medication in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) may lead to increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with non-adherence have been mainly identified via cross-sectional studies. To investigate the association between antidiabetic medication adherence and income, cohabitation and area of residence. METHODS: Register-based cohort study of individuals with T2D living in Sweden and initiating antidiabetic treatment between 2006 and 2022. Confounding adjustment and competing events were accounted for

Optimization of a preeclampsia early warning model driven by psychosocial factors: a five-year cohort study and its clinical impact.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to optimize a preeclampsia early warning model by integrating psychosocial factors (such as prenatal psychological stress and social support) with traditional clinical indicators to construct a more precise warning tool and analyze its impact on maternal disease burden. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included maternal data from obstetric inpatients between January 2018 and December 2023 at a single institution. Controls were selected via propensity score matching (PSM) at a 1:2 ratio. A preeclampsia early warning model incorporating multiple clinica

This study evaluates the effectiveness of refined nursing care in improving psychological well-being, medication adherence, and quality of life in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and angina pectoris and examines the moderating influence of social support on these outcomes. A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving CHD patients who received either refined nursing care or standard nursing during hospitalization and follow-up. Refined nursing care included psychological counseling, structured health education, personalized lifestyle guidance, and family-centered support. Pat

Concordance of HIV Prevention Advocacy Reports and its Associations with HIV Protective Behaviors.

Peer advocacy can promote HIV protective behaviors, but little is known about the concordance on prevention advocacy(PA) reports between people living with HIV(PLWH) and their social network members. We examined prevalence and correlates of such concordance, and its association with the targeted HIV protective behavior of the social network member. Data were analyzed from 193 PLWH(index participants) and their 599 social network members(alters). Kappa statistics measured concordance between index and alter reports of PA in the past 3 months. Logistic and multinomial regressions evaluated the r

Unequal loss: Disparities in relational closeness to a COVID-19 death among U.S. older adults.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 mortality occurred unevenly across U.S. demographic subgroups, leaving some communities harder hit than others. Black and Hispanic/Latino older adults are among those disproportionately affected by COVID-19 mortality, and in turn, COVID-19 bereavement. Because disparities in COVID-19 mortality may extend to COVID-19 bereavement, it is important to understand the incidence of COVID-19 bereavement among older adults at various degrees of relational closeness (e.g., spouse vs. household member vs. friend). METHODS: We used the National Social Health and Aging Project (NSHAP)

Intersectionality in Intervention Development: Insights From Formative Work on a Tailored Tobacco Cessation Program for LGBTQIA+ Young Adults.

Tailored tobacco cessation interventions focusing on minoritized communities are proliferating, but the extent to which these interventions address the needs of individuals with multiple minoritized social identities is unclear. We developed Empowered, Queer, Quitting, and Living (EQQUAL), an avatar-led digital smoking cessation intervention tailored for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more (LGBTQIA+) young adults based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), via a multistage user-centered design process. The Impact of Social Cognition on the Real-Life of People with Epilepsy.

Background. Previous research has demonstrated the impairment of social cognition (SC) in people with epilepsy. It is associated with worse social functioning and quality of life; however, the influence on real-life outcomes is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate how SC is associated with epilepsy variables and real-life outcomes (education, employment and relationships) among patients with epilepsy (PWE). Methods. Eighty-one PWE completed tasks of theory of mind (ToM) (faux pas recognition (FPRT) and Happé Strange Stories test (HST)) and emotion recognition (ER) (Reading of
