Interrater reliability of the DSM-5 and ICD-11 Criterion A for PTSD and complex PTSD in parents of children with autism using the Life Events Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with autism demonstrate elevated traumatic stress symptoms, but seldom receive diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD. An accurate assessment of Criterion A is essential for a valid diagnosis of these disorders, yet it is uncertain whether Criterion A, as defined by the two primary international diagnostic systems (DSM-5-TR and ICD-11), yields consistent interrater reliability, when psychologists rely solely on self-report from these parents for assessing PTSD or complex PTSD. AIMS: This study aims to investigate interrater reliabili

Pediatric Trauma and Posttraumatic Symptom Screening at Well-child Visits.

UNLABELLED: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse or neglect, parental substance abuse, mental illness, or separation, are public health crises that require identification and response. We aimed to increase annual rates of trauma screening during well-child visits from 0% to 70%, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom screening for children with identified trauma from 0% to 30%, and connection to behavioral health for children with symptoms from 0% to 60%. METHODS: Our interdisciplinary behavioral and medical health team implemented 3 plan-do-study-act cycles to improve

The psychological impact of torture.

UNLABELLED: Many refugees in the developed world are survivors of torture and present with health needs without their traumatic experience being disclosed or identified. Chronic pain is a common problem, as are symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other distress. Current circumstances, particularly poverty, uncertainty about asylum, separation from or loss of family and roles, and difficulties settling in the host country, all contribute to current psychological problems and exacerbate existing ones. Psychological treatment studies tend to be focused eith

Childhood physical and sexual abuse and subsequent depressive and anxiety disorders for two American Indian tribes.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship of childhood abuse, both physical and sexual, with subsequent lifetime depressive and anxiety disorders--depression or dysthymia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and panic or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)--among American Indians (AIs). METHOD: Three thousand and eighty-four AIs from two tribes--Southwest and Northern Plains--participated in a large-scale, community-based study. Participants were asked about traumatic events and family history, and were administered standard diagnostic measures of depressive/anxiety disorders. RESUL

How Do Patients with Mental Health Diagnoses Use Online Patient Portals? An Observational Analysis from the Veterans Health Administration.

Online patient portals may be effective for engaging patients with mental health conditions in their own health care. This retrospective database analysis reports patient portal use among Veterans with mental health diagnoses. Unadjusted and adjusted odds of portal feature use was calculated using logistic regressions. Having experienced military sexual trauma or having an anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or depression were associated with increased odds of portal use; bipolar, substance use, psychotic and adjustment disorders were associated with decreased odds. Divalproex sodium in the treatment of adults with bipolar disorder.

Divalproex sodium (Depakote, Abbott Laboratories) is an anticonvulsant with well-established efficacy in the treatment of bipolar I disorder, manic or mixed episode. Over the past 10 years, an increased number of studies indicate that divalproex has a broad spectrum of activity in the treatment of bipolar depression and rapid cycling, psychotic symptoms, impulsive aggression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Newer formulations of divalproex, namely the extended-release formulation, are now available. The improved tolerability and convenience of the once-daily extended-release formulation has

Thought-action fusion and thought suppression in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

To examine the significance of thought-action fusion (TAF) and thought suppression tendencies, the present study obtained pre- and post-treatment questionnaire data on these constructs in a sample of OCD patients (n=24) and non-OCD anxiety patients (n=20). Results indicate that TAF and suppression are correlated with severity of psychopathology. Yet, the associations between TAF and psychopathology are not typical for OCD, but do also occur in other anxiety disorders (e.g., panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and social phobia). As well, mean scores on the TAF and thought suppressi

Dietary phytochemicals modulate experience-dependent changes in Neurexin gene expression and alternative splicing in mice after chronic variable stress exposure.

Neurexins (NRXNs) are cell-adhesion molecules important in the formation and remodeling of neural circuits. It has been shown that aversive environmental stimuli can affect the expression pattern of Neurexin genes (Nrxns) impacting the regulation of synaptic strength. Accumulated evidence suggests that, after chronic exposure to psychological stress, the triggered changes in gene expression and splicing patterns of Nrxns may be involved in aversive conditioning. Previously, we have demonstrated that a novel treatment using dietary phytochemicals can modulate the response to chronic variable st

Post-traumatic responses to workplace violence among nursing professionals: a collaborative and comparative study in South Korea and Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence has had a significant and negative psychological impact on nursing professionals worldwide. Concerted worldwide efforts to improve work environments have not yet removed nursing professionals from the threat of violence. It is highly essential to conduct comparative research in various working environments where the nurses of each country have unique experiences of workplace violence. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in the rate, associated factors, and post-traumatic responses to workplace violence between South Korean and Chinese nurses in H

Stress-Enhanced Fear Learning (SEFL) is Associated with Enhanced Reactivation of Fear Engrams in Caudal but not Rostral Dentate Gyrus.

Traumatic stress can cause long-lasting changes in cognition and affect, sometimes leading to diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) model recapitulates understudied components of PTSD, such as stress-induced sensitization of fear learning. The SEFL procedure entails exposing mice to footshock stress followed later by fear conditioning in a different context. When tested later for recall of fear conditioning, previously stressed mice exhibit enhanced freezing compared to non-stressed controls. Studies have shown that dorsal and ventral

Pilot study of the effect of lipophilic vs. hydrophilic beta-adrenergic blockers being taken at time of intracardiac defibrillator discharge on subsequent PTSD symptoms.

A pathophysiological model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) posits that an overly strong stress response at the time of the traumatic event leads to overconsolidation of the event's memory in part through a central β-adrenergic mechanism. We hypothesized that the presence of a β-blocker in the patient's brain at the time of the traumatic event would reduce the PTSD outcome by blocking this effect. The unpredictable, uncontrollable discharge of an implantable intracardiac defibrillator (ICD) is experienced by most patients as highly stressful, and it has previously been shown to be capab

The prevalence and correlates of secondary traumatic stress among alcohol and other drug workers in Australia.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The high prevalence of trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among clients of alcohol and other drug (AOD) services is well documented. Less is known, however, about the impact this has on workers who assess and treat such clients. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and correlates of secondary traumatic stress (STS) among AOD workers in Australia. DESIGN AND METHODS: An anonymous web-based survey was undertaken and completed by 412 Australian AOD workers. The questionnaire assessed current levels of trauma training, extent of exposur

Provocative Findings From a Transdiagnostic Counseling Intervention to Improve Psychiatric Comorbidity and HIV Care Engagement Among People With HIV: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and alcohol/substance use disorders are prevalent among people with HIV (PWH), commonly co-occur, and predict worse HIV care outcomes. Transdiagnostic counseling approaches simultaneously address multiple co-occurring mental health disorders. METHODS: We conducted a pilot individually randomized trial of the Common Elements Treatment Approach adapted for people with HIV (CETA-PWH), a transdiagnostic counseling intervention, compared with usual care at a large academic medical center in the southern United States. Participants were adults

Individuals with and without child maltreatment experiences are evaluated similarly and do not differ in facial affect display at zero- and first-acquaintance.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a history of child maltreatment (CM) are more often disliked, rejected and victimized compared to individuals without such experiences. However, contributing factors for these negative evaluations are so far unknown. OBJECTIVE: Based on previous research on adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD), this preregistered study assessed whether negative evaluations of adults with CM experiences, in comparison to unexposed controls, are mediated by more negative and less positive facial affect display. Additionally, it was explored whether level of depression,

A transdiagnostic neuroanatomical signature of psychiatric illness.

Despite an increasing focus on transdiagnostic approaches to mental health, it remains unclear whether different diagnostic categories share a common neuronatomical basis. The current investigation sought to investigate whether a transdiagnostic set of structural alterations characterized schizophrenia, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and determine whether any such alterations reflected markers of psychiatric illness or pre-existing familial vulnerability. A total of 404 patients with a psychiatric diagnosis were recruited (psychosis, n = 129; uni
