Skeletal muscles are essential to the gender-specific characteristics of human movements. Sonomyography, a new signal for quantifying muscle activation, is of great benefit to understand muscle function through monitoring the real-time muscle architectural changes. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate gender differences in the architectural changes of gastronomies muscle and tendon by using sonomyography during performing two-legged calf raising exercises. A motion analysis system was developed to extract sonomyography from ultrasound images together with kinematic and kinetic me

UNLABELLED: A 73-year-old man presented with nontraumatic debilitating anterior left knee pain. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested a partial patellar tendon tear. However, ultrasound imaging revealed multiple small hyperechoic areas with posterior acoustic shadowing with intermixed hypoechoic fluid within the proximal patellar tendon, consistent with gouty tophi. The patient underwent ultrasound-guided needle barbotage of the tophi. Gout was confirmed by the presence of uric acid crystals in the aspirate. He had immediate pain relief. Ultrasound imaging 6 weeks later demonstrated healing of

INTRODUCTION: The extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendon normally inserts into the base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb. However, a distal insertion of the EPB tendon into the thumb interphalangeal joint has been reported in refractory cases of de Quervain's disease. We hypothesized that the EPB tendon is wider beyond the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint in patients with extended EPB. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the extensor tendon width and the point of distal insertion of the EPB tendon.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 45 hands from 18 male and 27 female adult cadaver

When studying muscle and whole-body function in children with cerebral palsy (CP), knowledge about both internal and external moment arms is essential since they determine the mechanical advantage of a muscle over an external force. Here we asked if Achilles tendon moment arm (MAAT) length is different in children with CP and age-matched typically developing (TD) children, and if MAAT can be predicted from anthropometric measurements. Sixteen children with CP (age: 10y 7m±3y, 7 hemiplegia, 12 diplegia, GMFCS level: I (11) and II (8)) and twenty TD children (age: 10y 6m±3y) participated in this

INTRODUCTION: Trigger wrist is a rare entity and is usually seen in adults. Trigger wrist in children and teenagers is extremely rare.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A case of Trigger wrist and carpal tunnel syndrome in a 16-year-old male is reported. Surgical exploration revealed a ganglion related to the flexor superficialis tendon. After surgical excision, there was complete resolution of symptoms.
DISCUSSION: This is a very rare case and there are no similar cases in the literature. The literature is reviewed and a classification of the causes of triggering at the wrist level is offered. The mana

Human hand is involved in variety of precision work which requires a combined effort of forearm muscles as well as intrinsic muscles of hand. Lumbricals along with interossei muscles connect the tendons of flexor and extensor muscles and thus play a key role in the characteristic movements of human hands. Lumbricals originate from long flexor tendon and is inserted into dorsal digital expansion. Any variation in the attachment of these muscles can lead to deviation from the normal actions of the fingers and their proximal extension into carpal tunnel and might lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. A…

Study Design Case report. Background Multifocal motor neuropathy is a progressive motor nerve disorder characterized by muscle weakness in the extremities. Muscle imbalance and weakness can become so severe that the involved extremity can be rendered nonfunctional. The purpose of this case report is to describe the physical therapy postoperative management of a patient who underwent a multiple tendon transfer to correct the loss of digital/wrist extension of the right upper extremity. Case Description A 38-year-old woman with a medical diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy, which caused mus

To establish whether a cadaver model can serve as an effective surrogate for the detection of tendon damage characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In addition, we evaluated intraobserver and interobserver agreement in the grading of RA-like tendon tears shown by US, as well as the concordance between the US findings and the surgically induced lesions in the cadaver model. RA-like tendon damage was surgically induced in the tibialis anterior tendon (TAT) and tibialis posterior tendon (TPT) of ten ankle/foot fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens. Of the 20 tendons examined, six were randomly as…

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon structural changes are common after injury and correlate with recovery of function. Having simple, inexpensive, yet valid and reliable measures of Achilles tendon structure are useful both in research and clinical. The purpose of this study was to perform reliability and validity measures of extended field of view (EFOV) ultrasound (US) imaging of the Achilles tendon.
METHODS: eight cadavers (16 tendons) were used for the validation study to compare Achilles tendon length measurements from US images with actual measured length from dissected tendons. Nine healthy s…

BACKGROUND: The optimal operative method for acromioclavicular joint reconstruction remains controversial. The modified Weaver-Dunn method is one of the most popular methods. Anatomic reconstruction of coracoclavicular ligaments with autogenous tendon grafts, widely used in treating chronic acromioclavicular joint instability, reportedly diminishes pain, eliminates sequelae, and improves function as well as strength.
OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical and radiologic outcomes between a modified Weaver-Dunn procedure and an anatomic coracoclavicular ligaments reconstruction technique using autogeno

The spring ligament complex is an important stabilizer of the medial ankle, together with the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) and the deltoid ligament complex. Lesions in these stabilizers result in acquired adult flatfoot deformity. The spring ligament complex includes three ligaments: the superomedial calcaneonavicular ligament, the medioplantar oblique calcaneonavicular ligament, and the inferoplantar longitudinal calcaneonavicular ligament. Normal MR imaging anatomy of the spring ligament complex and the PTT are described and illustrated in detail. Isolated lesions of the spring ligament com

RATIONALE: Ankle syndesmotic injuries occasionally require long-term therapy for recovery and can result in tendon injury. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is an acquired deformity that can cause flatfoot deformity. The current nonoperative management of PTTD includes nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), orthopedic devices. Although various treatment options have been attempted, optimal treatments for each stage of the condition are debated. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is effective in healing of chronic wounds associated with tissue damage by attracting tissue growth fact

OBJECTIVES: A common pathologic finding in carpal tunnel syndrome is fibrosis and thickening of the subsynovial connective tissue. This finding suggests an etiology of excessive shear forces, with relative longitudinal displacement between the flexor tendon and adjacent subsynovial connective tissue. The purpose of this study was to validate color Doppler sonography for measurement of tendon displacement over time.
METHODS: Eight unmatched fresh frozen cadaver arms were used to evaluate color Doppler sonography for measurement of tendon displacement. The middle flexor digitorum superficialis

UNLABELLED: The link between increased body weight and hindfoot complaints is largely based on correlation to single foot pathology. We retrospectively reviewed 6879 patients with tibialis posterior tendonitis (TPT), plantar fasciitis (PF), or both. Among patients with either TPT or PF, 1 in 11 (9%) had both. We then compared age, gender, and body mass index among these groups. Patients with both diagnoses were neither statistically older nor more obese than patients with single diagnoses. However, they were statistically more female. Given the overall high prevalence of obesity in the study p
