A modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) was carried out between January 1992 and December 2003 at the ENT Department of the Inselspital in Bern in 146 patients with habitual or complicated rhonchopathy. The life cycle of Lagochilascaris major was studied using eggs collected from a natural clinical case in a domestic cat. Twenty-seven white mice (Mus musculaus), 5 hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), and 1 vesper mouse (Calomys callosus) were orally inoculated with 800-1,300 embryonated eggs. This paper contains a statistical analysis of the dose-time factors influencing late complications in 784 patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the pharynx or larynx treated with external beam irradiation only at the University of Florida. Postoperative hemorrhage (PTH) and pain remain major concerns, particularly in adolescents and adults, in whom complications are more severe. OBJECTIVES: To compare unilateral vs bilateral hot tonsillectomy in managing peri-tonsillar abscesses.
METHODS: Literature review in Medline and other database sources, and critical analysis of data.
RESULTS: Management options for peri-tonsillar abscesses range from intravenous antibiotics alone or needle aspiration for small collections to incision and drainage or abscess tonsillectomy for larger ones. Regarding the latter, there is no clear consensus in the literature on favouring unilateral over bilateral excision.

We present the first reported case of tonsillar asymmetry secondary to a mandibular osteoma. Computed tomography rather than tonsillectomy for histology prevented the distress and risk of unnecessary surgery, and the patient was managed conservatively.

INTRODUCTION: Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV) causes rhinitis in both young and older pigs. The present study describes the detection and characterization of shedding profiles of PCMV in nine farrow-to-finish Brazilian swine herds.
METHODOLOGY: Tonsil swabs from sows, nursery and grow-finish pigs of nine farrow-to-finish commercial herds (n = 756) were evaluated for the presence of PCMV by PCR.
RESULTS: The virus was detected in all herds. Positive samples were concentrated in piglets of ages varying from 40 to 60 days (nursery phase), while none of the sows were positive for PCMV detection.

Coexistence of tuberculosis and neoplastic lesion in the oral cavity is a rare phenomenon. Till date, only three such cases have been reported in the English literature. A case of oral tuberculosis manifesting 3 months following the successful treatment of cancer of the oral tongue with chemoradiotherapy is presented. The diagnostic dilemma it posed, and its eventual successful control by anti-tubercular treatment, is discussed.
