Data are reviewed that illustrate the efficacy of the immunofluorescence (IF) technique as a method of rapid viral diagnosis. Its constant application in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology has allowed the detection of viral and/or inframicrobial antigens in cells from patients with eye diseases (keratoconjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis), stomatitis, skin diseases, benign and malignant gynecopathies, male urethritis, respiratory diseases, facial paralysis, etc. The IF technique has an incontestable advantage as regards the detection of the simultaneous presence of several infectious …

Two women with acute dacryocystitis were found to have noncaseating granulomatous inflammation of the lacrimal sac and nasal mucosa. One patient had chronic uveitis and the other had skin lesions and generalized lymphadenopathy histologically compatible with sarcoidosis. The diagnosis was supported by elevation of serum levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme. To our knowledge, these are the sixth and seventh histologically confirmed cases of sarcoidosis of the lacrimal sac. They differ from previously reported cases in the absence of classic roentgenographic changes of sarcoidosis. Analysis o…

A 44-year-old otherwise healthy woman was referred to Washington University with previous diagnoses of para planitis and retrobulbar neuritis, and with a current complaint of markedly decreased vision (light perception only) in the right eye. Among the findings at the time of this evaluation were posterior uveitis and evidence of optic neuropathy and of a disordered immune system. The patient responded to pulsed high-dose corticosteroid therapy. A subsequent similar episode in the left eye also was resolved with such treatment. Dr. Burde describes the case in detail and asks Drs. Keltner, Gitt…

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder with an unknown etiology that typically involves the lungs, skin, and lymph nodes, with neurological involvement being relatively rare. We discuss a case of neurosarcoidosis in a 64-year-old man who initially presented with unexplained cognitive impairment, insomnia, hyponatremia, paresthesias, and weight loss and later developed uveitis, diplopia, and dysphagia. Ultimately, findings of hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy on chest computed tomography (CT) resulted in bronchoscopy, which led to the diagnosis. This case highlights a rare pres…

Heerfordt's syndrome is a rare subtype of sarcoidosis and features a combination of facial palsy, parotid swelling, and uveitis, associated with a low-grade fever. Cases with two of three symptoms are called "incomplete Heerfordt's syndrome." Heerfordt's syndrome involving other cranial nerve symptoms is relatively rare. We herein report a case of incomplete Heerfordt's syndrome presenting with trigeminal nerve palsy and a reversed halo sign, a rare manifestation of pulmonary sarcoidosis. The histological diagnosis following a biopsy of the parotid gland and endobronchial ultrasound-guided tra…

We report the case of a 6-year-old girl with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and anterior uveitis who was treated with two doses of intravenous methylprednisolone for acute arthritis. She developed severe ocular hypertension (intraocular pressures (IOPs) of 54 mm Hg in the right eye and 61 mm Hg in the left eye) requiring inpatient therapy with intravenous acetazolamide. The normal range of values for IOP is 12-22 mm Hg. This severe case of acute intraocular hypertension due to systemic steroids highlights the need to consider monitoring of IOPs for children on high-dose topical and systemic ste…

We report a case of a 22-year-old obese man, intellectually disabled since birth, who developed sympathetic ophthalmitis in his right eye (RE) 2 months after a penetrating injury to his left eye; this despite primary repair went into phthisis with no perception of light. Initially the patient presented with features of anterior uveitis in the RE, for which oral and topical steroids were prescribed. The patient failed to keep regular follow-up appointments, and returned 2 months later with exudative retinal detachment, and was placed on steroids and immunosuppressives. The visual acuity of the …

We report a 39-year-old female admitted for fever. She showed physical findings of bilateral granulomatous uveitis, swelling of the bilateral parotid glands, and paralysis of the left second branch of the trigeminal nerve. Her chest X-ray showed evidence of bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy. We performed biopsy of her parotid gland, and leading to a diagnosis of noncaseating epithelioid granuloma characterized by lymphocyte and multinucleated giant cell invasion. Therefore, she was diagnosed with the abortive type of Heerfordt syndrome which is a subtype of sarcoidosis. This is the only case ass…

Toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of posterior uveitis in immunocompetent subjects: 30% of the world population may be affected, with wide variability. However, despite high seroprevalence, the incidence of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is limited to about 2% of infected patients; thus, about one million patients in France may be estimated to have active or cicatricial OT. Microbiological tools available to the clinician have considerably advanced over the last two decades, allowing the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis to be confirmed in the vast majority of suspected cases. Regardless of the route…

Nanoparticles are nanometer-scaled particles, and can be utilized in the form of nanocapsules, nanoconjugates, or nanoparticles themselves for the treatment of retinopathy, including angiogensis-related blindness, retinal degeneration, and uveitis. They are thought to improve the bioavailability in the retina and the permeability of therapeutic molecules across the barriers of the eye, such as the cornea, conjunctiva, and especially, blood-retinal barriers (BRBs). However, consisting of multiple neuronal cells, the retina can be the target of neuronal toxicity of nanoparticles, in common with …

Behçet's disease is an unusual medical condition in central Europe and North America, however more common in Turkey and Japan. It was originally described in Turkey, characterized by recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers and also uveitis. A variety of vascular lesions such as venous occlusions, arterial aneurysms and varices account for the high rate of morbidity and mortality with this disease. Arterial aneurysms most commonly occur in the abdominal aorta, femoral arteries and in the pulmonary arteries. To our knowledge there have been seventeen documented reports of patient's with Behçet's d…

Analysis of 47 eyes in 31 patients, aged 5-17 years with posterior or anterior IOL's implantation performed during cataract surgery was done. Visual acuity examined 7 days after surgery was 0.02-0.4 in the cases with cataract in one eye and 0.2-1.0 in those with cataract in both eyes. After the mean period of 2.5 years, visual acuity of at least 0.5 was achieved in all cases with binocular pseudophakia and in 20% of those with one pseudophakic eye. Uveitis was the most frequent complication in early postoperative period (25.5% of eyes) and posterior capsule opacities were observed later (31.9%…

Eleven separate three-month courses of cyclosporin A, an oral solution 10 mg/kg/day, were administered to eight patients with Behçet's disease with sight-threatening posterior uveitis. It was found to be effective in arresting the inflammatory activity in the eye as well as the mucocutaneous lesions of Behçet's disease. Improvement in visual acuity was observed within one week of starting therapy. Severe exacerbations in the ocular and mucocutaneous lesions occurred on withdrawal of the drug. At this dosage side effects included hirsutism in all women, and a slight rise of serum bilirubins in …

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease has been historically associated with specific ethnic groups, suggesting an underlying susceptibility. Prior to this study, no meta-analysis had synthesized the global epidemiology of VKH, and therefore, information on its geographic distribution remained incomplete. The present study aims to determine the global distribution of VKH disease diagnosis in individuals presenting with uveitis.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of quantitative studies published between 2001 and 2025 in PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS was conducted f…

Purpose: Macular edema is a leading cause of vision loss in noninfectious uveitis (NIU). Suprachoroidal triamcinolone acetonide (CLS-TA) has emerged as a targeted corticosteroid delivery strategy with a favorable anatomical and functional profile. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CLS-TA in NIU-associated macular edema by synthesizing evidence from clinical trials and real-world studies. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), supplemented by manual screening of reference lists, was co…

Background and Clinical Significance: Heerfordt syndrome (uveoparotid fever) is an uncommon extrapulmonary expression of sarcoidosis defined by parotid enlargement, uveitis, low-grade fever, and facial nerve palsy. It is identified in fewer than 1% of patients with biopsy-confirmed sarcoidosis, and the co-occurrence of bilateral seventh-nerve palsy with calcitriol-driven obstructive kidney injury has been reported only sporadically. Recognizing this metabolic-renal phenotype is clinically important because it is readily reversible yet easily missed when the chest radiograph is normal. Case Pre…
