Robotic Arm Assisted Slow Electrode Insertion and Simultaneous Measurement of Cochlear Microphonics in Cochlear Implantation.

Cochlear microphonic potentials (CMPs) are an electrical response predominantly of the outer and, to a smaller degree, the inner hair cells to acoustic signals. They can be used to monitor hearing and structure preservation during cochlear implantation. Among other precautions, slow and steady electrode insertion has proven beneficial in this regard. In this article, the authors present a combination of robotic-assisted implantation and observation of CMPs. CMPs are recorded through the cochlear implant tip electrode before and after opening the round window membrane, during insertion, and in

Ultra-sensitive wideband diffraction-grating-coupled-mode Fabry-Pérot resonators for ultrasound and photoacoustic detection.

Optical ultrasound detectors offer broad bandwidth, high sensitivity, significantly reduced electrical and acoustic impedance mismatch, and seamless integration with transparent imaging platforms for biomedical and industrial ultrasound and photoacoustic applications. A diffraction-grating-coupled-mode Fabry-Pérot (GFP) resonator that enables wideband optical detection of ultrasound and photoacoustic signals employing a simple, low-cost fabrication flow is described. A 1D grating couples light between normal incidence and ±1st orders that are confined by total-internal-reflection boundaries, f

Manipulating Topological Boundary States: From Corner-Bound to Arbitrarily Positioned Extended States.

Topological insulators with bulk-boundary correspondence have been widely explored in condensed-matter, photonic, and phononic systems. Two-dimensional second-order topological insulators are typically characterized by zero-dimensional boundary states localized at sharp corners. While these corner bound states have been widely explored across multiple platforms as robust signatures of second-order topology, their strong confinement to sharp corners severely limits practical applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate control over topological boundary states in a honeycomb-lattice acousti

Eye gaze in live-electronic music performance: visual information and looking-listening interplay.

Gaze tracking in music performance research often pertains to acoustic instrument performance. The differences between live-electronic music performance and acoustic instrument performance warrant an investigation of how performers use gaze in live-electronic music performance. We examine the combined use of gaze tracking recordings of 18 live-electronic performances with post-performance stimulated recall interviews with the goal of gathering qualitative information about gaze and the live-electronics setup. We identify two primary functional categories of gaze: visual information and looking

Acoustofluidic cryo-EM enables in situ particle manipulation for uniform, high-quality cryo-EM specimens.

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has revolutionized structural biology by enabling imaging of macromolecular complexes at near-atomic resolution, but its success depends critically on specimen quality. Standard plunge freezing often produces nonuniform particle distributions, resulting in poor particle statistics and reduced imaging quality, particularly for vesicular structures and low-concentration, labile macromolecular complexes. Here, we introduce acoustofluidic cryo-EM (ACE), a noncontact specimen-preparation method that integrates acoustofluidic manipulation into a conventional plunge

Dietary Intake of Enzymatically Processed Bee Larvae Mitigates Progressive Noise-Induced Hearing Impairment in Mice.

Bee larvae (BL) have a long history of use as both traditional medicine and food. Given that BL contain anti-inflammatory lipids and immune-modulating components, they may be efficacious against hearing loss and tinnitus. In this study, we investigated the effects of enzymatically processed BL on the suppression of hearing loss using mouse models of acute acoustic injury and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). In an assay where C57BL/6 mice were exposed to a single 5-min burst of 110 dB white noise, pre-treatment with BL was found to reduce transient acoustic damage. Furthermore, under conditio

Human cortical dynamics of auditory word form encoding.

We perceive continuous speech as a series of discrete words, despite the lack of clear acoustic boundaries. The superior temporal gyrus (STG) encodes phonetic elements like consonants and vowels, but it is unclear how whole words are encoded. Using high-density cortical recordings and spoken narratives, we investigated how the human brain represents auditory word forms. STG activity exhibits a distinctive reset at word boundaries, marked by a sharp drop in cortical activity. Between resets, STG encodes acoustic-phonetic, prosodic, and lexical features, supporting integration of phonological fe

Candidate Key Proteins in Tinnitus-A Bioinformatic Study of Synaptic Transmission in the Inferior Colliculus.

Proteins involved in synaptic transmission in normal hearing, acoustic stimulation, and tinnitus were identified using protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. The gene list for tinnitus was compiled from the GeneCards database using the keywords "synaptic transmission" AND "inferior colliculus" AND "tinnitus" (Tin). For comparison, two gene lists were built using the keywords "auditory perception" (AP) and "acoustic stimulation" (AS). The STRING and the Cytoscape data analyzer were used to identify the top two high-degree proteins (HDPs) and the corresponding high-score interaction protein

Estimating Cochlear Implant Users' Sound Localization Abilities With Two Loudspeakers.

The ability to tell where sound sources are in space is ecologically important for spatial awareness and communication in multisource environments. While hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs) can support spatial hearing for some users, this ability is not routinely assessed clinically. The present study compared sound source localization for a 200-ms speech-shaped noise presented using real sources at 18° intervals from -54° to +54° azimuth and virtual sources that were simulated using amplitude panning with sources at -54° and +54°. Participants were 34 adult CI or electric-acoustic stimul

Sex-specific role for the long noncoding RNA Pnky in mouse behavior.

The aberrant expression of specific long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been associated with cognitive and psychiatric disorders. Although a growing number of lncRNAs are now known to regulate neural cell development and function, relatively few lncRNAs have been shown to underlie animal behavior. Pnky is an evolutionarily conserved, neural lncRNA that regulates brain development. Using mouse genetic strategies, we show that Pnky has sex-specific roles in mouse behavior and that this lncRNA can underlie specific behavior by functioning in trans. Male Pnky-knockout mice have decreased context gen

On the tympanic membrane impedance of the katydid Copiphora gorgonensis (Insecta: Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Katydids (bush-crickets) are endowed with tympanal ears located in their forelegs' tibiae. The tympana are backed by an air-filled tube, the acoustic trachea, which transfers the sound stimulus from a spiracular opening on the thorax to the internal side of the tympanic membranes (TM). In katydids the sound stimulus reaches both the external and internal side of the membranes, and the tympanal vibrations are then transferred to the hearing organ crista acustica (CA) that contains the fluid-immersed mechanoreceptors. Hence the tympana are principally involved in transmitting and converting airb

Effect of muscular activation on surrounding motor networks in developmental stuttering: A TMS study.

Previous studies regarding developmental stuttering (DS) suggest that motor neural networks are strongly affected. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to investigate neural activation of the primary motor cortex in DS during movement execution, and the influence of muscle representations involved in movements on "surrounding" ones. TMS was applied over the contralateral abductor digiti minimi (ADM) motor representation, at rest and during the movement of homologue first dorsal interosseous muscles (tonic contraction, phasic movements cued by acoustic signalling, and "self-paced" m

Sound exposure dynamically induces dopamine synthesis in cholinergic LOC efferents for feedback to auditory nerve fibers.

Lateral olivocochlear (LOC) efferent neurons modulate auditory nerve fiber (ANF) activity using a large repertoire of neurotransmitters, including dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh). Little is known about how individual neurotransmitter systems are differentially utilized in response to the ever-changing acoustic environment. Here we present quantitative evidence in rodents that the dopaminergic LOC input to ANFs is dynamically regulated according to the animal's recent acoustic experience. Sound exposure upregulates tyrosine hydroxylase, an enzyme responsible for dopamine synthesis, in cho

Early evolution of the ossicular chain in Cetacea: into the middle ear gears of a semi-aquatic protocetid whale.

Modifications of the morphology and acoustic properties of the ossicular chain are among the major changes that accompanied the adaptation of Cetacea to the aquatic environment. Thus, data on the middle ear ossicles of early whales are crucial clues to understand the first steps of the emblematic terrestrial/aquatic transition that occurred in that group. Yet, the delicate nature and very small size of these bones make their preservation in the fossil record extremely rare. Due to the scarcity of available data, major questions remain concerning the sound transmission pathways in early non-ful

Intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible and schwannoma of the spinal cord: A rare presentation of schwannomatosis - Case report and review of the literature.

Schwannomatosis is a recently recognized distinct form of neurofibromatosis (NF). It is a rare condition, the incidence of which varies between 1/400,000 and 1/1.7 million. An important feature of schwannomatosis is the presence of multiple intracranial, spinal, and peripheral schwannomas in the absence of acoustic neuromas. Schwannomatosis presenting with intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible is even rarer, and only a few cases have been reported. It usually affects individuals in the third to fifth decade of life. Usually, it is sporadic in origin, but in 20% of patients, it can be familia

Effect of Middle-Ear Pathology on High-Frequency Ear Canal Reflectance Measurements in the Frequency and Time Domains.

The effects of middle-ear pathology on wideband acoustic immittance and reflectance at frequencies above 6-8 kHz have not been documented, nor has the effect of such pathologies on the time-domain reflectance. We describe an approach that utilizes sound frequencies as high as 20 kHz and quantifies reflectance in both the frequency and time domains. Experiments were performed with fresh normal human temporal bones before and after simulating various middle-ear pathologies, including malleus fixation, stapes fixation, and disarticulation. In addition to experimental data, computational modeling

The acute effect of exposure to noise on cardiovascular parameters in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, an experiment was conducted to examine whether noise exposure produced acute changes in cardiovascular responses, and whether these responses differed based on psycho-acoustic parameters to noises of low to high intensity. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects were enrolled. Three industrial noises were binaurally presented with a supra-aural earphone. The sound levels of noise were <55, 75, and 90 dB. Each noise was continued for 20 min and the electrocardiogram was simultaneously recorded. RESULTS: The results showed a statistically significant increase in systolic blo

A Computational Method for Analyzing the Biomechanics of Arterial Bruits.

A computational framework consisting of a one-way coupled hemodynamic-acoustic method and a wave-decomposition based postprocessing approach is developed to investigate the biomechanics of arterial bruits. This framework is then applied for studying the effect of the shear wave on the generation and propagation of bruits from a modeled stenosed artery. The blood flow in the artery is solved by an immersed boundary method (IBM) based incompressible flow solver. The sound generation and propagation in the blood volume are modeled by the linearized perturbed compressible equations, while the soun
