Prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility and characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from dairy industries in north-central and north-eastern Greece.

Staphylococcus aureus is an important cause of food intoxication, whereas methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) constitutes a serious public-health concern due to its ability to colonize and infect humans and animals. S. aureus and MRSA have often been isolated from milk and dairy products. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence and the antimicrobial resistance of S. aureus and MRSA in four Greek dairy industries, to identify virulence factors of MRSA isolates and to describe their genetic diversity, in order to identify possible epidemiological links and evaluate the ri

Rabies awareness and dog ownership among rural northern and southern Chadian communities-Analysis of a community-based, cross-sectional household survey.

Canine rabies represents a major - but preventable - public health threat in Chad. In preparation for a nation-wide canine parenteral mass vaccination campaign we conducted a community-based, cross-sectional multi-stage cluster survey in 40 villages in two southern and two northern regions of Chad. Our objective was to investigate rabies awareness and dog-ownership among the rural population. Almost half of the households (45%) owned dogs, with an overall dog:human ratio of 1:7.8. Southern households owned almost two thirds (701/918) of all dogs and the number of dogs per household was twice a

Heterogeneity and phylogenetic relationships of community-associated methicillin-sensitive/resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates in healthy dogs, cats and their owners.

AIMS: To investigate the distribution of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes (se) and the molecular features of community-associated methicillin-sensitive/resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MSSA/MRSA) isolates in the nostrils of healthy pets and their owners. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 114 Staph. aureus isolates were identified from 1563 nasal swab samples, and CA-MRSA accounted for 20·2% (n = 23) of the total identified isolates. CA-MRSA isolates (91·3%, 21/23) harboured higher percentage of se than did CA-MSSA isolates (58·2%, 53/91) (P < 0·01), and the two highest se profiles of CA-MRSA

Neural correlates of frog calling: production by two semi-independent generators.

The anterior preoptic nuclei of the isolated brainstem of male, Northern leopard frogs (Rana p. pipiens) were stimulated electrically and neural correlates of mating calling recorded from the rhombencephalic mating calling pattern generator. Lesions of discrete areas of the brainstem showed that the mating calling generator is separable into two generators, the pretrigeminal nucleus and the classical pulmonary respiration generator (which is approximately co-extensive with the motor nuclei IX-X). Each of these still can produce pulses when isolated from the other. Their interaction changes the

Placental extracellular vesicles stimulate intestinal re-growth after massive small bowel resection in a rat model.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are released by most cells, including stem cells, into the extracellular environment and regulate cell function and tissue regeneration through cell-cell communication. The EVs derived from human placenta have a crucial role in regulating the maternal immune response for a successful pregnancy outcome. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of human villous trophoblasts (HVT)-derived EVs on structural intestinal adaptation, cell proliferation and apoptosis in a rat model of short bowel syndrome (SBS). HVT-EVs were isolated from cell media afte

Florfenicol Enhances Colonization of a Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis floR Mutant with Major Alterations to the Intestinal Microbiota and Metabolome in Neonatal Chickens.

Florfenicol is an important antibiotic commonly used in poultry production to prevent and treat Salmonella infection. However, oral administration of florfenicol may alter the animals' natural microbiota and metabolome, thereby reducing intestinal colonization resistance and increasing susceptibility to Salmonella infection. In this study, we determined the effect of florfenicol (30 mg/kg of body weight) on gut colonization of neonatal chickens challenged with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis. We then analyzed the microbial community structure and metabolic profiles of c

Alternative ileal flap for bladder augmentation if mesentery is short.

PURPOSE: To date the clam ileocystoplasty is the preferred method of bladder augmentation in children when the urodynamic problem is non-compliance and/or detrusor overactivity. The key to this technique is the incision of the bladder wall deep into the pelvis down to the trigone in order to avoid a diverticulum like neobladder and to provide adequate margin for augmentation. The detubularised ileum flap therefore has to reach to the bottom of the divided bladder on a reliable vascular pedicle without significant tension. A short ileal mesentery caused by previous surgery, peritonitis, periton

Agricultural work related injury and ill-health and the economic cost.

This paper contains a literature review of the occupational injuries and ill-health in agriculture world-wide and a survey of the attempts that have been made to estimate the resulting economic and social costs. Agricultural workers suffer a wide variety of disorders as a result of their occupation. These range from minor (cuts, bruises) to more severe (deep wounds, fractures), permanent (amputation, spinal cord injury) and fatal injury. Ill-health as a result of contact with animals, micro-organisms, plant material dusts or chemicals are associated with certain types of agriculture. There is

Upregulation of metallophore-related genes of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus enhances pathogenicity in BALB/c mice.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study revealed that ST59-t437-SCCmecIVa methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has strong pathogenicity and can cause damage to host tissue and cell death. However, the interaction between the pathogen and the host during the infection process remains unclear. This study developed an infection interaction model of highly virulent ST59-t437-SCCmecIVa in MRSA and BALB/c mice. RESULTS: The results revealed that the lungs were among the main organs involved, with high bacterial loads in the lung tissue of infected mice. WGCNA and Cytoscape analysis revealed th

Tissue extracellular vesicles suppress neonatal cardiac regeneration: a Pak2-Erk1/2-mediated macrophage paracrine signaling.

Myocardial infarction leads to cardiomyocyte loss, and the compromised proliferative capacity of cardiomyocytes after birth hinders the process of heart repair, ultimately culminating in heart failure. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), known as cell-secreted "messengers", play a pivotal role in tissue pathophysiology. Here, we report the novel finding that myocardial tissue-derived vesicles from mice on postnatal day 8 (P8-EVs) possess the potential to modulate cardiomyocyte proliferation. Notably, direct administration of EVs derived from day 1 or day 8 (P1/P8) myocardial tissue does not impact n

Nociceptor-to-macrophage communication through CGRP/RAMP1 signaling drives endometriosis-associated pain and lesion growth in mice.

Endometriosis is a debilitating and painful gynecological inflammatory disease affecting up to 15% of women and transgender men. Current treatments are ineffective for a substantial proportion of patients, underscoring the need for additional therapies with long-term benefits. Nociceptors release neuropeptides, such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which are known to shape immunity through neuroimmune communication. Given the comorbidity between endometriosis and migraine and the integral role of immune cells and inflammation in endometriosis, we investigated the role of CGRP-mediate

Cardiomyocytes recruit monocytes upon SARS-CoV-2 infection by secreting CCL2.

Heart injury has been reported in up to 20% of COVID-19 patients, yet the cause of myocardial histopathology remains unknown. Here, using an established in vivo hamster model, we demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in cardiomyocytes of infected animals. Furthermore, we found damaged cardiomyocytes in hamsters and COVID-19 autopsy samples. To explore the mechanism, we show that both human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hPSC-derived CMs) and adult cardiomyocytes (CMs) can be productively infected by SARS-CoV-2, leading to secretion of the monocyte chemoattractant cytokine

Natural killer T cell/IL-4 signaling promotes bone marrow-derived fibroblast activation and M2 macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition in renal fibrosis.

Renal fibrosis is a histological manifestation of chronic kidney disease. Natural killer T (NKT) cells have a critical role in the pathogenesis of fibrotic disorder. However, the role of NKT cells in regulating kidney fibrosis remains largely unknown. In the current study, we showed that the percentages of NKT+ cells and NKT+-IL-4+ cells were notably increased in folic acid (FA) and obstructive nephropathy. CD1d deficiency protected mice from renal fibrosis induced by FA and obstructive injury. Specifically, Loss of CD1d reduced bone marrow-derived myofibroblasts and CD206+/α-smooth muscle act

Use of Robotic Pets in Providing Stimulation for Nursing Home Residents with Dementia.

Trial experiments utilized robotic pets to facilitate self-reliance in nursing home residents. A remote-control robot modeled clear and meaningful behaviors to elderly residents. Special attention was paid to its effects on mental and social domains. Employing the robot as a gaze target and center of attention created a cue to initiate a communication channel between residents who normally show no interest in each other. The Sony AIBO robot in this study uses commercially available wireless equipment, and all its components are easily accessible to any medical or welfare institution interested

Enhanced fibroblast-myocyte interactions in response to cardiac injury.

RATIONALE: A critical event in the development of cardiac fibrosis is the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. The electrophysiological consequences of this phenotypic switch remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether fibroblast activation following cardiac injury results in a distinct electrophysiological phenotype that enhances fibroblast-myocyte interactions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Neonatal rat myocyte monolayers were treated with media (CM) conditioned by fibroblasts isolated from normal (Fb) and infarcted (MI-Fb) hearts. Fb and MI-Fb were also plated on top of myoc
