Risk factors of abuse of parents by their ADHD children.

It is interesting that there is scant research of abuse of parents by their children and no study was found on the abuse of parents by their attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children. Seventy-four children and adolescents suffering from ADHD and their parents were interviewed. The diagnoses were made according to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. A questionnaire was developed to assess the children's abuse toward parents. More than half of the parents are suffering from at least one of the forms of abuse by their ADHD children. Scores of parental abuse were not related to gender. Diff

[Early manifestations of behavioral disorders in children and adolescents].

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the early diagnosis of behavioral disorders in childhood and adolescence and to provide the pediatrician with practical knowledge about the first symptoms of the main behavioral disorders at this age. SOURCES OF DATA: PubMed (emphasis on the past decade). SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Pediatricians should be prepared to detect behavioral disorders as early as possible. Early detection could improve outcome and/or lead to etiologic diagnosis of mendelian inheritance disorders, allowing genetic counseling. Early symptoms of pervasive developmental disorders, attention deficit/

A rare coexistence: tyrosinemia type III and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Tyrosinemia type III is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder of tyrosine metabolism caused by mutations in the HPD gene, which encodes 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD). Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a congenital cardiac conduction disorder characterized by the presence of an accessory atrioventricular pathway. While each condition is rare in isolation, their coexistence has not been previously reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a 6-year-old boy with known WPW syndrome who was admitted with ketotic hypoglycemia after prolonged fas

Polygenic Risk of Mental Disorders and Subject-Specific School Grades.

BACKGROUND: Education is essential for socioeconomic security and long-term mental health; however, mental disorders are often detrimental to the educational trajectory. Genetic correlations between mental disorders and educational attainment do not always align with corresponding phenotypic associations, implying heterogeneity in the genetic overlap. METHODS: We unraveled this heterogeneity by investigating associations between polygenic risk scores for 6 mental disorders and fine-grained school outcomes: school grades in language and mathematics in ninth grade and high school, as well as ed

Predicting likelihood of psychological disorders in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) players from Asian countries using supervised machine learning.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) has become one of the most popular genre of online video games played by gamers worldwide. Previous studies have exhibited that excessive engagement in games can lead to Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Internet Gaming Disorder has been associated with psychological disorders like impulsivity, anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In this study, we propose an approach to use the game and player statistics along with self-esteem measure of a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG, a MOBA game) player to predict whether he/she suffers fro

Natural vs. surgical postmenopause and psychological symptoms confound the effect of menopause on executive functioning domains of cognitive experience.

OBJECTIVE: The menopause transition is associated with difficulties in executive function. However, it is unclear whether these difficulties persist past perimenopause. This study investigated whether potential confounders, including natural vs. surgical postmenopause and menopause-related psychological symptoms, influence whether executive dysfunction persists into postmenopause. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional sample of women aged 35-65 years (N = 1971) in one of four groups, premenopause, perimenopause, natural postmenopause, and surgical postmenopause, were surveyed. Participants self-rep

Childhood and adolescent mental health of NICU graduates: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mental health of children and adolescents admitted to neonatal intensive/special care units (NICUs) in infancy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used a provincially representative cohort from the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study. Parents provided data on psychiatric disorders using the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents in 3141 children aged 4-11 years (NICU n=389; control n=2752) and in 2379 children aged 12-17 years (NICU n=298; control n=2081). Additionally, 2235 adolescents aged 12-17 years completed the interview the

Overlapping Spectrum of Impulsivity and Compulsivity Across Psychiatric Disorders: A Narrative Review on Dimensional Perspectives.

Impulsivity and compulsivity are complex constructs that underpin a wide range of psychiatric disorders. While traditionally viewed as opposing dimensions, emerging evidence suggests they exist on an overlapping spectrum, influencing diagnosis and treatment. Impulsivity is characterized by poorly planned, premature responses aimed at achieving gratification, while compulsivity involves repetitive behaviors driven by anxiety relief. Both constructs share common neurobiological substrates, such as impaired response inhibition and urgency, but differ in their executive dysfunction patterns. Psych

Microduplication of 15q13.3 and Xq21.31 in a family with Tourette syndrome and comorbidities.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorder. Although it is widely accepted that genetic factors play a significant role in TS pathogenesis the etiology of this disorder is largely unknown. Identification of rare copy number variations (CNVs) as susceptibility factors in several neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and schizophrenia, suggests involvement of these rare structural changes also in TS etiology. In a male patient with TS, ADHD, and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) we identified two microduplication

Psychiatric and behavioral problems in aggressive drivers.

Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are a leading cause of accidental death and injury, and aggressive driving has been identified as a risk factor for MVAs. Assessing psychiatric and behavioral disturbances in aggressive drivers is germane to the development of prevention and intervention programs for this population. The present study compared the prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses and behavioral problems in young adult drivers with self-reported high driving aggression to that of drivers with low driving aggression. Aggressive drivers evidenced a significantly higher current and lifetime preval

Electroretinography in psychiatry: A systematic literature review.

This review aims to consolidate the available information on use of electroretinography as a diagnostic tool in psychiatry. The electroretinogram (ERG) has been found to have diagnostic utility in cocaine withdrawal (reduced light-adapted b-wave response), major depressive disorder (reduced contrast gain in pattern ERG), and schizophrenia (reduced a- and b-wave amplitudes). This review examines these findings as well as the applicability of ERG to substance use disorder, Alzheimer's disease, autism spectrum disorder, panic disorder, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a

Specific abnormalities in serotonin release in the prefrontal cortex of isolation-reared rats measured during behavioural performance of a task assessing visuospatial attention and impulsivity.

RATIONALE: Rats reared in social isolation exhibit hyperactivity and specific attentional disturbances in later adult life. These behavioural abnormalities may be relevant to impulsivity and other neuropsychiatric syndromes such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia where disturbances in circuitry involving the prefrontal cortex have been identified. OBJECTIVE: To establish whether isolation-reared rats show a differential susceptibility to cognitive processes that depend on the prefrontal cortex and its monoaminergic innervation. METHODS: Rats were reared in isolatio

Blinded, multi-center validation of EEG and rating scales in identifying ADHD within a clinical sample.

Previous validation studies of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessment by rating scales or EEG have provided Class-IV evidence per standards of the American Academy of Neurology. To investigate clinical applications, we collected Class-I evidence, namely from a blinded, prospective, multi-center study of a representative clinical sample categorized with a clinical standard. Participating males (101) and females (58) aged 6 to 18 had presented to one of four psychiatric and pediatric clinics because of the suspected presence of attention and behavior problems. Significance of childhood conduct problems to later development of conduct disorder among children with ADHD: a prospective follow-up study.

This study investigates whether low to moderate levels of childhood oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) behaviors contribute to the development of clinically diagnosed CD in adolescence, in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants were 207 White boys (ages 6-12) with ADHD free of conduct disorder diagnoses. Parent and teacher ratings were obtained. Participants were assessed at mean age 18 by clinicians blind to childhood status. A non-ADHD group (recruited in adolescence) was also studied. ODD behavior ratings did not predict CD in

Prenatal exposure to maternal hypertension and higher body mass index and risks of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders during childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) or prepregnancy overweight/obesity are independently associated with the risk for certain neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in offspring. These two conditions often co-exist but the risk from combined exposure is unknown. We investigated whether specific subtypes of maternal HDP, along with prepregnancy overweight/obesity, were associated with the distinct risk of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in offspring during childhood. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective, population-based cohort study used data from 652

Neurobehavioral disorders among children born to mothers exposed to illicit substances during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to illicit substances during pregnancy may have long-term impacts on children's neurodevelopment. This study explores subsequent risks for intellectual disability, autistic disorders, and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders in children born to mothers exposed to illicit substances before or during pregnancy. METHODS: We identified women with illicit drug use by linking the police records from the "Substance Abuse Control Databases" and Taiwan Birth Registration and Birth Notification records from 2004 to 2014. Children whose mothers that had exposed to illicit s

RD, ADHD, and their comorbidity from a dual route perspective.

In order to achieve further insight into the comorbidity of reading disorder (RD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), lexical processing and rapid naming were studied in RD and ADHD. The Dual Route Cascaded model postulates that lexical processing contains two parallel processes: lexical route processing and sublexical route processing. An orthographic decision task and a phonological decision task were used to measure lexical and sublexical route processing, respectively. In addition, a rapid naming task was used to compare 27 children with RD, 18 children with ADHD, 20 child

Hyperactivity/restlessness is associated with increased functional connectivity in adults with ADHD: a dimensional analysis of resting state fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a serious and frequent psychiatric disorder of multifactorial pathogenesis. Several lines of evidence support the idea that ADHD is, in its core, a disorder of dysfunctional brain connectivity within and between several neurofunctional networks. The primary aim of this study was to investigate associations between the functional connectivity within resting state brain networks and the individual severity of core ADHD symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity). METHODS: Resting state functional magnetic resonance

Gut microbiota composition links to variation in functional domains across psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in microbial composition are observed in various psychiatric disorders, but their specificity to certain symptoms or processes remains unclear. This study explores the associations between the gut microbiota composition and the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) domains of functioning, representing symptom domains, specifically focusing on stress-related and neurodevelopmental disorders in patients with and without psychiatric comorbidity. METHODS: The gut microbiota was analyzed in 369 participants, comprising 272 individuals diagnosed with a mood disorder, anxiety disorder,
