The action of dichlorphenamide has been investigated in three healthy subjects. After this drug had been given, ventilation increased while alveolar and oxygenated mixed venous Pco(2) both fell. The magnitude of these changes was closely related to the degree of acidosis produced by the drug. The effect of intravenous acetazolamide, tested in one subject, was qualitatively similar to that of orally administered dichlorphenamide. Respiratory responses to carbon dioxide were studied in two of the subjects and in one of them the metabolic acidosis was sufficient to account for the short-term effe

BACKGROUND: Current practice and policies maintain that it is very important to disclose to potential research subjects that their treatment will be selected by randomization. In contrast, it typically is not considered important to disclose to patients how doctors select their treatment. Unfortunately, when the available treatment options are similar to one another, this approach has the potential to inadvertently undermine both clinical research and clinical care. Hence, it is important to assess whether, in the context of similar treatment options, individuals support current practice of us

Thiosulfate: cyanide sulfurtransferase (TST), also named rhodanese, is an enzyme widely distributed in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, where it plays a relevant role in mitochondrial function. TST enzyme is involved in several biochemical processes such as: cyanide detoxification, the transport of sulfur and selenium in biologically available forms, the restoration of iron-sulfur clusters, redox system maintenance and the mitochondrial import of 5S rRNA. Recently, the relevance of TST in metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, has been highlighted, opening the way for research on important aspe

Twenty percent of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease by experts like me in fact don't have elevated amyloid and so, in fact, don't have Alzheimer's. What they do have is the subject of intense research, and there are many possibilities. A recent study of one thousand brain autopsies from older adults with a range of cognitive impairment showed at least 230 combinations of neuropathology. The point is that while the disease will be treatable, we're unlikely to defeat it as we did polio and smallpox. We're going to have to learn how to live with Alzheimer's as an at least somewhat treat

Correct selection of an appropriate animal mode to closely mimic human extremity diseases or to exhibit desirable phenotypes of limb regeneration is the first critical step for all scientists in biomedical and regenerative researches. The commonly-used animals in limb regeneration and repairing studies, such as axolotl, mice, and rats, are discussed in the review and other models including cockroaches, dogs, and horses are also mentioned. The review weighs the general advantages, disadvantages, and precedent uses of each model in the context of limb and peripheral injury and subsequent regener

Biofilms formed by Candida species (spp.) on medical devices represent a potential health risk. The focus of current research is searching for new options for the treatment and prevention of biofilm-associated infections using different approaches including modern nanotechnology. This review summarizes current information concerning the most relevant resistance/tolerance mechanisms to conventional drugs and a role of additional factors contributing to these phenomena in Candida spp. (mostly Candida albicans). Additionally, it provides an information update in prevention and eradication of a Ca

The laboratory mouse has been the premier model organism for biomedical research owing to the availability of multiple well-characterized inbred strains, its mammalian physiology and its homozygous genome, and because experiments can be performed under conditions that control environmental variables. Moreover, its genome can be genetically modified to assess the impact of allelic variation on phenotype. Mouse models have been used to discover or test many therapies that are commonly used today. Mouse genetic discoveries are often made using genome-wide association study methods that compare al…

This study comprises the comprehensive toxicological assessment of thiolated organosilica nanoparticles (NPs) synthesised from 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS). We investigated the influence of three different types of nanoparticles synthesised from 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane: the starting thiolated silica (Si-NP-SH) and their derivatives prepared by surface PEGylation with PEG 750 (Si-NP-PEG750) and 5000 Da (Si-NP-PEG5000) on biological subjects from in vitro to in vivo experiments to explore the possible applications of those nanoparticles in biomedical research. As a result of …

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are being actively researched in various biomedical applications, particularly as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents for diagnosing various liver pathologies like nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis. Emerging evidence suggests that IONPs may exacerbate hepatic steatosis and liver injury in susceptible livers such as those with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. However, our understanding of how IONPs may affect steatotic cells at the sub-cellular level is still fragmented. Generally, there is a lack of stu

Clarity regarding the biomedical definition of death and the criteria for its determination is critical to inform practices in clinical care, medical research, law, and organ donation. While best practices for death determination by neurologic criteria and circulatory criteria were previously outlined in Canadian medical guidelines, several issues have arisen to force their reappraisal. Ongoing scientific discovery, corresponding changes in medical practice, and legal and ethical challenges compel a comprehensive update. Accordingly, the A Brain-Based Definition of Death and Criteria for its D

Knowledge graphs have become a common approach for knowledge representation. Yet, the application of graph methodology is elusive due to the sheer number and complexity of knowledge sources. In addition, semantic incompatibilities hinder efforts to harmonize and integrate across these diverse sources. As part of The Biomedical Translator Consortium, we have developed a knowledge graph-based question-answering system designed to augment human reasoning and accelerate translational scientific discovery: the Translator system. We have applied the Translator system to answer biomedical questions i

The opportunity to create different patterns of magnetic nanoparticles on surfaces is highly desirable across many technological and biomedical applications. In this paper, this ability is demonstrated for the first time using a computer-controlled aerosol jet printing (AJP) technology. AJP is an emerging digitally driven, non-contact and mask-less printing process which has distinguishing advantages over other patterning technologies as it offers high-resolution and versatile direct-write deposition of a wide range of materials onto a variety of substrates. This research demonstrates the abil
