[Polymorphonuclear granulocytes in rheumatic tissue destruction VIII. Considerations on the inflammatory cartilage destruction in chronic arthritides in comparison with liver injuries by PMN's].

Inflammatory cartilage destruction in chronic arthritides is usually regarded as the process owing to chondrocytic chondrolysis or ingrowth of pannus tissue. Besides these two mechanisms a third one-cartilage degradation directly mediated by polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN's) of the synovial fluid-seems to be underestimated. There is growing evidence that PMN's are involved in several non-bacterial organ destructions (e.g., alcoholic hepatitis); thus, two case reports are presented demonstrating cartilage destruction by PMN's via the synovial fluid. It is shown by light and electron micros…

Collagen IX: evidence for a structural association between NC4 domains in cartilage and a novel cleavage site in the alpha 1(IX) chain.

Collagen IX, a structural component of the extracellular matrix of connective tissues, is synthesized as long and short forms which contain or lack, respectively, a 27 kDa non-collagenous (NC) 4 domain at the N-terminus of the alpha 1(IX) chain of the molecule. The long form occurs in cartilage and developing cornea, but not in vitreous, suggesting a specialized function for the NC4 domain, perhaps by interacting with other macromolecules. To test this hypothesis, embryonic chick cartilage was treated with DTSSP, dissociated with bacterial collagenase, and the NC4-containing DTSSP-cross-linked…

The mechanism of autoantibody formation to cartilage in rheumatoid arthritis: possible cross-reaction of antibodies to dietary collagens with autologous type II collagen.

In order to study the mechanism of autoantibody formation to type II collagen in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), IgG and IgA antibodies in sera from 259 RA patients and 285 non-RA controls were evaluated for their specificity as to collagen type (I and II) and species (chick, bovine, and porcine) using an improved enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. IgG and IgA anti-type II collagen antibodies were commonly found in both RA (IgG, 41%; and IgA, 45%) and non-RA (IgG, 36%; and IgA, 31%) sera. Both IgG and IgA collagen antibodies were highly reactive with one or more heterologous type II or type I colla

Interstitial Fluid Load Support in Human Articular Cartilage: Effects of Degeneration, Loading, and Material Properties via Combined Experimental Testing and Computational Modeling.

Interstitial fluid pressurization plays a key role in cartilage mechanics, as it enables load support, reduces solid matrix stress, and limits solid-solid contact, thereby minimizing wear and friction. Because direct measurement of interstitial fluid load support is challenging, our modeling approach provides a practical means to estimate it based on experimental data. While its role has been studied experimentally and computationally, the combined effects of osteoarthritis, tissue composition/material parameters, anatomical location, and loading protocols on fluid pressurization remain poorly…

Surgical management of complex non-union in chest wall instability: focus on posterior rib fractures, parasternal cartilage rupture, and costal margin injury.

Non-union of the chest wall is an underrecognized but functionally significant complication of thoracic trauma, particularly when involving posterior ribs, parasternal cartilage, and the costal margin. Complex instability patterns can result in persistent pain, mechanical dysfunction, and impaired respiration. We describe two patients with symptomatic chest wall non-union. Case 1 was a 62-year-old man with posterior non-union of the seventh and eighth ribs and a secondary costal margin rupture with intercostal hernia. He underwent combined posterior rib plating and costal margin reconstruction…

Beyond Hounsfield Units: A Comparative Study of Semiquantitative Morphological Features for Differentiating Silicone from Autologous Costal Cartilage Nasal Implants on CT Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying the type of existing nasal implant is crucial for preoperative planning of revision rhinoplasty in patients with secondary cleft lip nasal deformity. However, patients often lack accurate information. Although Hounsfield Units (HUs) on computed tomography (CT) offer a potential solution, their discriminatory power remains uncertain. This study evaluated the efficacy of a novel three-dimensional (3D) density measurement method and compared it with semiquantitative morphologic assessment for differentiating silicone from autologous costal cartilage implants. MATERIALS …

A finite element simulation study on the superficial collagen fibril network of knee cartilage under cyclic loading: Effects of fibril crosslink densities.

Collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, plays a pivotal role in the functioning of tissues such as cartilage of synovial joints. Mathematical modeling enables the more detailed study of the physical behavior of the network under load bearing. In this study, we aimed to develop a microscopic finite element (FE) modeling approach for the study of the stresses and strains of the collagen fibrils of cartilage under mechanical loading. This new approach enabled the two-dimensional modeling of a series of collagen meshwork at the microscopic level based on typical superficial collagen…

Arthroscopically confirmed cartilage degeneration in the lateral tibial plateau over two years following anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Articular cartilage injuries are frequently associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and may lead to early knee osteoarthritis (OA) if left untreated. Although ACL and meniscus injuries are commonly treated simultaneously, cartilage injuries are often left in situ. This study aimed to evaluate the progression of the cartilage injury in the lateral compartment following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) combined with lateral meniscus (LM) repairs. METHODS: A retrospective review of ACL and LM injuries was conducted in patients who underwent ACLR and meniscus repair. Patien…

Recurrence of an Oval Window Rupture 25 Years After Traumatic Stapediovestibular Luxation Repair: A Case Report of a Novel Cartilage Sealing Technique.

Stapediovestibular luxations are often caused by trauma to the external ear canal. Sealing the oval window while leaving the stapes in the vestibule is a safer procedure than stapedectomy, considering the risk of additional inner ear damage, but it risks recurrence. We report a rare case of oval window rupture recurrence 25 years after initial surgery and introduce a new method using cartilage to seal the oval window. A 37-year-old woman experienced a recurrence of oval window rupture after nasal blowing. She had a history of left ear ossicular chain dislocations and oval window rupture caused…

High levels of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) are associated with lower knee joint cartilage quality and higher knee joint symptoms in healthy individuals.

In an asymptomatic population, we investigated the relationships between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and cartilage T2 relaxation time at the knee joint level. Fourteen and 17 participants with high and normal levels of HbA1c were recruited, respectively. A blood sample was used to determine the HbA1c level. T2 relaxation time (T2) of the superficial and deep parts of the femoral cartilage in the anterior, central, and posterior topographical sites was calculated using magnetic resonance (1.5 T) images. Each participant completed a knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score questionnaire (KO…

Identification of a founder effect involving n.197C>T variant in RMRP gene associated to cartilage-hair hypoplasia syndrome in Brazilian patients.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia syndrome (CHH) is an autosomal recessive disorder frequently linked to n.72A>G (previously known as n.70A>G and n.71A>G), the most common RMRP variant worldwide. More than 130 pathogenic variants in this gene have already been described associated with CHH, and founder alterations were reported in the Finnish and Japanese populations. Our previous study in Brazilian CHH patients showed a high prevalence of n.197C>T variant (former n.195C>T and n.196C>T) when compared to other populations. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible founder effect of the n.197C…
