Research article network analysis of polymicrobial chronic wound infections in Masanga, Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Chronic wounds are frequently colonized or infected with multiple bacterial or fungal species, which can both promote or inhibit each other. Network analyses are helpful to understand the interplay of these species in polymicrobial infections. Our aim was to analyse the network of bacterial and fungal species in chronic wounds. METHODS: Swabs (n = 163) from chronic wound infections (Masanga, Sierra Leone, 2019-2020) were screened for bacterial and fungal species using non-selective agars. Some of these wounds were suspected but not confirmed Buruli ulcer. Species identification wa

Presumptive hemophagocytic syndrome associated with co-infections with FIV, Toxoplasma gondii, and Candidatus mycoplasma haemominutum in an adult cat.

A 9-year-old neutered male cat, previously test-positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), was presented with an history of vomiting, hyporexia, and weight loss. Panleukopenia was identified on complete blood counts, and bone marrow evaluation revealed ineffective granulocytic hyperplasia and rare neutro-, erythro-, and rubriphagocytosis. Prednisolone was initiated with no response, and progression to pancytopenia occurred. On abdominal ultrasonographic examination, splenomegaly was present. PCR testing was positive for Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum and IgG antibodies against Toxop

Generation of "OP7 chimera" defective interfering influenza A particle preparations free of infectious virus that show antiviral efficacy in mice.

Influenza A virus (IAV) defective interfering particles (DIPs) are considered as new promising antiviral agents. Conventional DIPs (cDIPs) contain a deletion in the genome and can only replicate upon co-infection with infectious standard virus (STV), during which they suppress STV replication. We previously discovered a new type of IAV DIP "OP7" that entails genomic point mutations and displays higher antiviral efficacy than cDIPs. To avoid safety concerns for the medical use of OP7 preparations, we developed a production system that does not depend on infectious IAV. We reconstituted a mixtur

Mycobacterium infection secondary to exogenous lipoid pneumonia caused by nasal drops: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) is a rare disease and its diagnosis is often mistaken or delayed. Secondary infection with rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria is a rare complication of lipoid pneumonia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man presented with fever, cough, sputum, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. He had a 2-year history of allergic rhinitis and used liquid paraffin-containing menthol nasal drops daily. A chest CT scan showed multiple patchy ground glass opacities with blurred borders in both lungs, which were located in the inner pulmonary field and

Babesia microti alleviates disease manifestations caused by Plasmodium berghei ANKA in murine co-infection model of complicated malaria.

Malaria remains one of the most significant health issues worldwide, accounting for 2.6% of the total global disease burden, and efforts to eliminate this threat continue. The key focus is to develop an efficient and long-term immunity to this disease via vaccination or therapeutic approach, and innovative strategies would enable us to achieve this target. Previously, using a mouse co-infection disease model, cross-protection was illustrated between Babesia microti and Plasmodium chabaudi. Hence, this study was planned to elucidate the impact of acute B. microti Peabody mjr and Plasmodium berg

Case Series: Mixed Infectious Keratitis by Pythium insidiosum and Fungal Species.

SIGNIFICANCE: This case series is the first to illustrate mixed infection from Pythium sp. and fungal species in corneal ulcer. PURPOSE: This case series aimed to alert all toward the possibility of both Pythium sp. and fungal species infection in case of nonresponding corneal ulcer treated with either antifungals or antipythium drugs alone. Increased suspicion of mixed infection in case of nonresponding fungal/ Pythium keratitis may facilitate early and prompt management. CASE REPORTS: Six patients presented with signs of either fungal or Pythium keratitis. They underwent ophthalmological e

Intestinal helminth co-infection and associated factors among pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Africa and Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) and intestinal helminths have huge public health importance, and they are geographically overlapped. Data about the burden of intestinal helminth and TB co-infection in these areas are fragmented. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we compile the current literatures and generate pooled prevalence. We also identity factors associated with intestinal helminth co-infection among TB patients. METHODS: Original articles published in English language up to March 23, 2022 were systematically searched from electronic database (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Science D

Mpox as AIDS-defining event with a severe and protracted course: clinical, immunological, and virological implications.

A 59-year-old treatment-naive patient with advanced HIV infection presented with a severe and protracted course of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) that did not respond to the current mpox treatment options. The patient worsened clinically, and developed new mucocutaneous lesions and necrotic evolution of pre-existing ones, along with multiple bilateral lung nodules and the appearance of a tracheal necrotic lesion. Although severe forms of mpox have been observed in people with severe immune system deficiency, including those with advanced HIV presentation, the immunological mechanisms under

Co-infection of dengue and Zika viruses mutually enhances viral replication in the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits two of the most serious mosquito-borne viruses, dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), which results in significant human morbidity and mortality worldwide. The quickly shifting landscapes of DENV and ZIKV endemicity worldwide raise concerns that their co-circulation through the Ae. aegypti mosquito vector could greatly exacerbate the disease burden in humans. Recent reports have indicated an increase in the number of co-infection cases in expanding co-endemic regions; however, the impact of co-infection on viral infection and the detailed m

Lipid mediators of cerebrospinal fluid in response to TBE and bacterial co-infections.

Tick-borne diseases are caused by monoinfection or co-infection with different pathogens, including viruses, bacteria and protozoa. Tick-borne diseases are usually accompanied by oxidative stress which promotes the modifications of the host's lipid metabolism. The aim of the study was to compare total antioxidant status and the level of lipid mediators in the cerebrospinal fluid in response to tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and bacterial co-infections that cause diseases such as that is Lyme borreliosis (LB) and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA). In our study cerebrospinal fluid samples wer

Th2 and metabolic responses to nematodes are independent of prolonged host microbiota abrogation.

Antibiotic treatment can lead to elimination of both pathogenic bacteria and beneficial commensals, as well as to altered host immune responses. Here, we investigated the influence of prolonged antibiotic treatment (Abx) on effector, memory and recall Th2 immune responses during the primary infection, memory phase and secondary infection with the small intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus. Abx treatment significantly reduced gut bacterial loads, but neither worm burdens, nor worm fecundity in primary infection were affected, only worm burdens in secondary infection were elevated in Ab

Super Dominant Pathobiontic Bacteria in the Nasopharyngeal Microbiota Cause Secondary Bacterial Infection in COVID-19 Patients.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory infectious disease responsible for many infections worldwide. Differences in respiratory microbiota may correlate with disease severity. Samples were collected from 20 severe and 51 mild COVID-19 patients. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used to analyze the bacterial community composition of the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The indices of diversity were analyzed. When one genus accounted for >50% of reads from a sample, it was defined as a super dominant pathobiontic bacterial genus (SDPG). In the upper respiratory

Uncovering the genetic diversity of Giardia intestinalis in isolates from outbreaks in New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Giardia intestinalis is one of the most common causes of diarrhoea worldwide. Molecular techniques have greatly improved our understanding of the taxonomy and epidemiology of this parasite. Co-infection with mixed (sub-) assemblages has been reported, however, Sanger sequencing is sometimes unable to identify shared subtypes between samples involved in the same epidemiologically linked event, due to samples showing multiple dominant subtypes within the same outbreak. Here, we aimed to use a metabarcoding approach to uncover the genetic diversity within samples from sporadic and out

Streptococcus pneumoniae and Influenza A Virus Co-Infection Induces Altered Polyubiquitination in A549 Cells.

Epithelial cells are an important line of defense within the lung. Disruption of the epithelial barrier by pathogens enables the systemic dissemination of bacteria or viruses within the host leading to severe diseases with fatal outcomes. Thus, the lung epithelium can be damaged by seasonal and pandemic influenza A viruses. Influenza A virus infection induced dysregulation of the immune system is beneficial for the dissemination of bacteria to the lower respiratory tract, causing bacterial and viral co-infection. Host cells regulate protein homeostasis and the response to different perturbance
