Population declines and changes in community composition at the world's largest penguin colony.

The Antarctic Peninsula and Scotia Sea are experiencing the greatest pressures from climate change and fisheries in the Southern Ocean, with associated penguin population declines. However, surveys of the South Sandwich Islands in 2011 concluded that numbers there were stable. Zavodovski, the northernmost island in the archipelago, was then hailed as the largest penguin colony in the world. We show that, by 2025, rapid declines of maritime Antarctic chinstrap penguins mean this title has now been ceded to the Adélie penguin colony at Cape Adare, Ross Sea. Over the same period, the subantarctic

Development of an infographic design framework for public communication of personalized cancer therapy.

Personalized cancer therapy (PCT) has become a central paradigm in modern oncology, yet its core concepts-genomic variability, biomarker analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based decision-making-remain difficult for the general public to understand. Improving visual communication is essential for enhancing health literacy and supporting patient-centered care. This study employed a design-based research framework integrating literature review, concept modeling, visual metaphor development, and iterative prototype refinement. Core elements of PCT were analyzed and translated into a st

VISTA: a classifier for metagenomic subspecies and community state typing of the vaginal microbiome.

Metagenomic community state types (mgCSTs) capture within-species genetic and functional diversity and community structure of the vaginal microbiome, enabling precise links between microbiome composition, function, and health-related risk. VISTA, the Vaginal Inference of Subspecies and Typing Algorithm, is a two-step classifier that assigns mgCSTs to vaginal metagenomes, providing standardized, scalable classifications.

Fostering Student Engagement via a Community Outreach and Engagement Internship Program.

BACKGROUND: Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) is a mandated component of National Cancer Institute (NCI)- designated comprehensive cancer centers. Community partnerships are necessary to address cancer disparities, yet few examples of training programs exist to guide career development focused on community-engaged cancer prevention. We designed and assessed a COE internship to enhance workforce development through experiential learning in cancer prevention and control. METHODS: We implemented a six-week, part-time COE internship that paired didactic training with hands-on experience in

Community-wide adaptive evolution of gut bacteria during dietary transitions.

Diet exerts selection on bacterial species within the mammalian gut microbiota 1,2,3,4,5 , but the extent, modes, genomic bases, and repeatability of gut bacterial adaptive evolution in response to dietary variation within hosts are poorly understood. Here, we show that within-host dietary transitions drive ubiquitous and highly reproducible adaptive evolution of gut bacterial populations. We deeply profiled allele-frequency dynamics in gut microbiota of an experimental cohort of litter-matched wild-derived isogenic mice either transitioned from low-fat/high-carbohydrate diets to high-fat/low-

Synthetic microbial community to enhance the fermentation and feed valorization of pineapple waste.

Global livestock industry is confronted with severe feed-supply pressure, and valorizing agro-industrial by-products has become a promising way to alleviate feed resource shortages. Large quantities of pineapple waste are produced annually during pineapple processing, but antinutritional factors greatly limit its direct application in pig diets. Pineapple waste (PW) is a promising agro-industrial by-product for feed production; however, its high levels of antinutritional factors and structural carbohydrates limit its utilization in monogastric animals. This study aimed to develop a synthetic m

Patient information requests across diverse community pharmacy practice settings.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacists often need patient health information such as laboratory results to provide safe care. However, access to this information varies by pharmacy setting. While health system outpatient pharmacists have access to electronic health records (EHRs), most independent and chain pharmacies rely on limited dispensing software data. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the frequency and characteristics of patient health information requests made by community pharmacists in independent and health system outpatient pharmacies during routine care delivery and to compare findings acr

Canadian primary care needs community health workers as relational infrastructure.

Canada's primary care system faces persistent challenges related to access, continuity, and coordination. These pressures are commonly framed in terms of health workforce shortages, long waits, and growing demand associated with population aging and immigration. But capacity constraints do not fully account for the problem. Many access failures also arise before and between clinical encounters: needs go unrecognized, entry points are unclear or culturally misaligned, referrals break down across handoffs, and follow-up is not sustained. These breakdowns disproportionately affect people facing s

Communities in restorative justice: insights from Colombia's Special Jurisdiction for Peace.

While restorative justice recognises communities and victims as distinct key stakeholders, important questions remain about how these categories should be distinguished and why community participation is necessary, particularly in transitional justice contexts where systematic violence may directly affect entire human groups and territories. This article addresses these questions through a conceptual analysis of Colombia's Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), focusing on Macrocase 05. It argues that, in transitional settings, the distinction between communities and collective subjects recogni

Cultural Adaptation of Oral Health Educational Materials in Two AI Communities.

Early childhood caries is one of the most common chronic diseases in children under age 6 and is especially prevalent in Indigenous communities. To help prevent early childhood caries, the team conducted a feasibility study with two tribal communities to adapt an oral health education program using social determinants of health as a guiding framework. This article describes the process used to develop and culturally tailor educational materials for the intervention. The team adapted materials from past oral health projects and analyzed data from early interviews and feedback from community adv

When grooming stalls: Assessing communicative repair, negotiation, and progressivity in chimpanzees.

Human social interaction is built on progressivity (the forward flow of interaction), which communicative breakdowns may disrupt. Communicative repair (resolving communicative troubles) and negotiation (a collaborative sequence to resolve communicative breakdowns) may both serve as processes to restore progressivity following breakdowns. Here, we investigated gestural redoings(reproduction of a previous signal in any form), negotiation, and progressivity in grooming interactions (N = 311) among male East African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the wild. These chimpanzees produc

Human Trafficking and Exploitation in Pediatric Acute Care: Recognition, Communication, and Response.

Human trafficking and exploitation of children are recognized pediatric public health concerns. Children and adolescents who experience trafficking may present to pediatric acute care settings with injuries, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy concerns, malnutrition, substance use, chronic pain, behavioral health crises, delayed care, or non-specific somatic symptoms. Disclosure is uncommon, and clinical recognition depends on awareness of risk factors, careful observation, trauma-informed communication, and clear response pathways. Pediatric clinicians should avoid relying on stereotyp

Multimodal, wearable sensors with tactile communication capabilities for human and robotic applications.

We demonstrate a multimodal, wearable device with haptics-based communication that enables wearers to perceive environmental hazards through vibrations. The device monitors gaseous, aerosolized, and aqueous contaminants and conveys threshold events via distinct tactile codes. Energy harvesting with low power sensing methods yield a high-fidelity system with day long operation. Communication can be extended from humans to robots by engineering a soft electronic skin (e-skin) incorporating an array of transducers embedded in silicone that resolves the temporal structure of the tactile codes.
