Differential contribution of Anopheles coustani and Anopheles arabiensis to the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax in two neighbouring villages of Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is still a heavy public health concern in Madagascar. Few studies combining parasitology and entomology have been conducted despite the need for accurate information to design effective vector control measures. In a Malagasy region of moderate to intense transmission of both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, parasitology and entomology have been combined to survey malaria transmission in two nearby villages. METHODS: Community-based surveys were conducted in the villages of Ambohitromby and Miarinarivo at three time points (T1, T2 and T3) during a single malaria transmis

Making sense of interactions between mental health and criminal justice services: the utility of cultural historical activity systems theory.

Purpose Effective collaboration between mental health services (MHS) and criminal justice services (CJS) impacts on mental illness and reduces reoffending rates. This paper proposes the change laboratory model (CLM) of workplace transformation as a potential tool to support interagency collaborative practice that has potential to complement current integration tools used in this context. The purpose of this paper is to focus specifically on the theoretical dimension of the model: the cultural historical activity systems theory (CHAT) as a theoretical perspective that offers a framework with wh

Antibiotic therapy for skin and soft tissue infections: a protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in hospital and community settings impose a substantial socio-economic burden. Therapeutic uncertainty due to the availability of a wide range of antibiotics and the need for empirical treatment decisions complicate SSTI clinical management. Completion of numerous pairwise meta-analyses to account for this variability in antibiotics is impractical, and many head-to-head comparisons of potential interest are likely not available. In comparing multiple antibiotics simultaneously, this network meta-analysis aims to identify the antibiotic(s) wit

Unequal power relations and partner violence against women in Tanzania: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research on factors associated with partner violence against women is often framed within the context of gender inequality and power imbalances between husbands and wives-inequalities that are considered products of broader structural systems. Tanzania, a patriarchal society where high levels of partner violence exists, has gone through rapid economic and social changes over the past two decades. Increasing numbers of women are seeking paid work, and men's ideals of manhood have reshaped with evidence of extra marital relations and alcohol use. Nationally representative population-

Ebola cases and health system demand in Liberia.

In 2014, a major epidemic of human Ebola virus disease emerged in West Africa, where human-to-human transmission has now been sustained for greater than 12 months. In the summer of 2014, there was great uncertainty about the answers to several key policy questions concerning the path to containment. What is the relative importance of nosocomial transmission compared with community-acquired infection? How much must hospital capacity increase to provide care for the anticipated patient burden? To which interventions will Ebola transmission be most responsive? What must be done to achieve contain

A new analytical framework of 'continuum of prevention and care' to maximize HIV case detection and retention in care in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: The global initiative 'Treatment 2.0' calls for expanding the evidence base of optimal HIV service delivery models to maximize HIV case detection and retention in care. However limited systematic assessment has been conducted in countries with concentrated HIV epidemic. We aimed to assess HIV service availability and service connectedness in Vietnam. METHODS: We developed a new analytical framework of the continuum of prevention and care (COPC). Using the framework, we examined HIV service delivery in Vietnam. Specifically, we analyzed HIV service availability including geographic

A mixed methods pilot study with a cluster randomized control trial to evaluate the impact of a leadership intervention on guideline implementation in home care nursing.

BACKGROUND: Foot ulcers are a significant problem for people with diabetes. Comprehensive assessments of risk factors associated with diabetic foot ulcer are recommended in clinical guidelines to decrease complications such as prolonged healing, gangrene and amputations, and to promote effective management. However, the translation of clinical guidelines into nursing practice remains fragmented and inconsistent, and a recent homecare chart audit showed less than half the recommended risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers were assessed, and peripheral neuropathy (the most significant predictor o

Perceived benefits and challenges one year after receiving brief therapy in a district psychiatric centre. An exploration of patients' and GPs' experiences: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Scarce treatment resources put pressure on mental health services prompting innovations in service provision. Various innovative strategies have been introduced to provide patients with improved and effective treatment due to increased demands for mental health services. In 2016 a district psychiatric centre (DPC) started a brief treatment program to provide early and effective help for moderate depression and anxiety. There is little evidence regarding the potential benefits that different mental health patients may experience after receiving brief therapy treatment. Moreover, few

Assessment of an Innovative Mobile Dentistry eHygiene Model Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic in the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network: Protocol for Design, Implementation, and Usability Testing.

BACKGROUND: Amid COVID-19, and other possible future infectious disease pandemics, dentistry needs to consider modified dental examination regimens that render quality care, are cost effective, and ensure the safety of patients and dental health care personnel (DHCP). Traditional dental examinations, which number more than 300 million per year in the United States, rely on person-to-person tactile examinations, pose challenges to infection control, and consume large quantities of advanced-level personal protective equipment (PPE). Therefore, our long-term goal is to develop an innovative mobil

Capacity building through workforce training and community engagement for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anaesthesia (SOTA) care: Case studies from South Asia.

South Asia faces a critical deficit in surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anaesthesia (SOTA) care, with over 1.6 billion people lacking access to safe and affordable surgical services. Addressing this inequity requires urgent workforce capacity building beyond traditional specialization. This study, conducted by the G4 Alliance Asia Working Group, employs a Multiple-Case Study design utilizing Cross-Case Synthesis to present six initiatives from Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, and India, mapped against a SOTA care workforce capacity building framework. We describe initiatives by training type (programm

Interventions Promoting Goals of Care Conversations in Serious Illness: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Goals of care (GOC) discussions are critical conversations between patients, families, and clinicians to ensure medical treatment aligns with patients' values/preferences, especially in the context of serious illness. Despite their importance in enhancing patients' quality of life (QOL) and aligning care plans with values/preferences, GOC discussions occur infrequently due to systemic, clinician, and patient-level barriers. We sought to conduct an updated review of the literature highlighting recent interventions aimed at improving GOC discussions, as summarizing these advancements

Bridging the knowledge gap: Thai parents' perspectives on dengue infection and its vaccination and the need for targeted promotion.

BACKGROUND: Dengue infection is endemic in Thailand, with children being the most impacted group. Various measures, including the dengue vaccine (recently recommended in Thailand since 2017 for Dengvaxia and 2023 for Qdenga), have been implemented to prevent and manage the disease. However, the rate of infection among Thai children is still high. This study explored Thai parents' knowledge and attitudes toward dengue infection and its preventive vaccine, guided by the 4C Model for vaccine hesitancy. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study employed a questionnaire survey, utilizing five invest

Use of organizational change strategies and personalized agency feedback improves addressing tobacco in behavioral health outpatient treatment settings.

INTRODUCTION: Implementing evidence-based interventions for tobacco use disorder (TUD) in community mental health agencies is critical, given the low adoption rates of these interventions and the high rates of TUD among patients, contributing to the high morbidity and shortened lifespan of this population. Implementation efforts require enhancing organizational preparedness to integrate these evidence-based interventions. PURPOSE: When the Addressing Tobacco Through Organizational Change (ATTOC) model was evaluated in a cluster-randomized trial (with 13 clinics, 610 clients, and 222 staff) an
