Systematic literature review on early clinical evidence for immune-resolution therapies and potential benefits to patients and healthcare providers.

INTRODUCTION: Several current therapies for autoimmune diseases do not provide sustained remission. Therapies that focus on the restoration of homeostasis within the immune system (i.e., immune resolution) could overcome the limitations of current therapies and provide more durable remission. However, there is no established consensus on appropriate clinical trial designs and endpoints to evaluate such therapies. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) focusing on five index diseases (asthma, atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], and

Social isolation: main dermatosis and the impact of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the pattern of triggering and exacerbation of dermatological diseases between March and July 2020 and to compare this pattern to the corresponding period of 2019. METHODS: This was a quantitative, descriptive, comparative and documentary study that was carried out through the retrospective analysis of medical records (March to July 2019 and 2020) of individuals assisted at a private dermatology practice service located in the southern area of the city of São Paulo (SP). RESULTS: We evaluated 992 medical consultations in 2019 and 1,176 in 2020. In 2020, we observed a sig

Quality of life in Swedish children with eczema.

The burdens of childhood eczema are many and some can be assessed with quality of life (QoL) questionnaires. Seventy-eight Swedish children with mild-to-severe eczema ("atopic dermatitis", prurigo Besnier), fulfilling established diagnostic criteria, were investigated for the effect of eczema on QoL. This was measured with validated questionnaires: the Infants' Dermatitis Quality of Life Index (IDQOL), the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI), and the Dermatitis Family Impact Questionnaire (DFI). The study also included scoring of eczema severity. The median score was 7.0 (range 1

[Skin and environment].

The human skin is one of the major human organs in perpetual interaction with environmental factors. Permanent micro-aggressions by light, mechanical factors or chemical factors are useful for the maintenance of healthy skin. For example light is necessary for vitamin D synthesis and for the control of skin inflammation. If the aggression is too strong, repair mechanisms are involved such as wound healing or DNA repair. Accumulation of aggressions could induce acute or chronic diseases such as sunburn, photoageing or skin carcinoma. On specific individuals with genetic predisposition environme

[Circulating immune complexes in skin disease patients. Study and literature data (author's transl)].

Circulating immune complexes (C.I.C.) were investigated in 244 patients with various skin diseases and 100 healthy subjects. C.I.C. were detected by the PEG-C4 assay, firstly proposed by Digeon et al. using the precipitation by polyethylene glycol (PEG 3,5 p. 100) and the determination by laser nephelometry of complement component C4 in sera and in precipitates. The percentage of C4 precipitated and of positive subjects were significantly increased in numerous cutaneous diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis, psoriasis, cont

Impact of dupilumab on patch test results and allergic contact dermatitis: A prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Limited and conflicting data have been reported on the impact of dupilumab (DUPI) on patch test (PT) results and its efficacy against allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to analyze PT reactivities and relevance during treatment with DUPI to determine whether they could detect ACD in patients with uncontrolled or worsened atopic dermatitis (AD) who were receiving this agent. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter study examined 76 DUPI-treated patients who had undergone PTs. The relevant information was collected during 3 visits. RESULTS: Overa

Angiogenesis in Chronic Inflammatory Skin Disorders.

Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from preexisting vessels, is associated with inflammation in various pathological conditions. Well-known angiogenetic factors include vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiopoietins, platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor-β, and basic fibroblast growth factor. Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) have recently been added to an important angiogenic factor. Accumulating evidence indicates associations between angiogenesis and chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Angio

Contact urticaria on eczematous skin by kiwifruit allergy. In vivo component-resolved diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Kiwifruit allergy has been responsible for a variety of clinical manifestations, ranging from mild reactions, such as localised oral symptoms, to severe systemic symptoms, such as anaphylaxis. No cases of isolated contact urticaria (ICU) due to IgE-mediated allergy to kiwifruit have been reported in the literature so far. Here we describe the first three cases of ICU due to kiwi and we hypothesise about a kiwifruit allergen not described yet. METHODS: Using the available in vivo allergy tests, we performed a component-resolved diagnosis to detect the allergen involved. All the pat

Approach to pruritus in the adult HIV-positive patient.

Pruritus will affect a majority of HIV-infected adults in the course of their disease, impacting their quality of life. Itchy skin conditions in the HIV-infected patient may be atypical in appearance and pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. Skin changes because of chronic scratching or the absence of skin findings despite ongoing pruritus should prompt investigations for underlying causes. The presence of pruritus or pruritic skin conditions and their response to therapy may be a barometer for changes in systemic inflammation, immune activation, and dysregulation because of infection with

[Incidence of contact allergy in patients with eczema nummulare].

In patients with eczema nummulare patch tests with a panel of 18 allergens were done with positive result in 9 (18%) cases. In 6 cases multivalent allergy was found. Most frequently positive tests were obtained with potassium dichromate. The tests showed participation of contact allergy in the development of changes in a part of patients with eczema nummulare.

T-cell subset assay. A useful differentiating marker of atopic and seborrheic eczema in infancy?

To confirm T-cell changes previously reported in atopic eczema, to compare T-cell subset values in atopic and seborrheic infants, and to determine whether T-cell subset assay would be a useful differentiating marker between atopic and seborrheic infants, three age- and sex-matched groups of normal, seborrheic, and atopic infants were recruited. T-cell subset values, total serum IgE, and serum IgE to specific allergens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssimus, cat epithelium, dog dander, rye grass, egg white, and milk) were measured. The results showed that total and allergen-specific IgE levels were hi

Immunopathological and ultrastructural findings in human allergic and irritant contact dermatitis.

The histopathological features of allergic contact dermatitis were compared with those of irritant contact dermatitis in a group of 17 subjects. Each patient received simultaneous patch tests of a known allergen and a standardized irritant (benzalkonium chloride). The cellular changes occurring between 3 h and 7 days after patch test application were studied by light and electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry. No differences were observed between the induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and the irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), either in the responding cell types or the sequence of
