Inner ear impairment after stapedotomy: do the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials play a diagnostic role?

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is characterized by a bony remodeling process that ends up with stapes fixation. The hearing impairment can be recovered by surgery by replacing the stapes superstructure. Due to the surgical management of the vestibule, the vestibular examination could provide an insight into the correlation between this kind of surgery and vestibular changes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of the stapedotomy on the inner ear. METHODS: We evaluated pure tone audiometry and the presence of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in 41 patients with otosclerosis before and a…

Sacrifice of the chorda tympani nerve during middle-ear surgery can lead to resolution of dysgeusia.

BACKGROUND: Cholesteatoma often presents with persistent otorrhoea, conductive hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction. Rarely, cholesteatoma can cause dysgeusia if the lesion invades into the chorda tympani nerve. This paper presents an individual with cholesteatoma whose dysgeusia resolved following a mastoidectomy in which the chorda tympani was sacrificed. The current literature was reviewed for explanations behind this phenomenon. CASE REPORT: A previously fit 57-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of persistent otorrhoea and the complaint of a metallic taste in the mouth, and w…

Causes of Middle Ear Aural Polyps in Adult Patients from Kut and Diwaniyah Cities in Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Aural polyps consider as one of the most notable progressive lesions of middle ear. Chronic otitis media can result in development of aural polyps that ascends from the tympanic cavity outwards to the external auditory canal, leading to tympanic membrane perforation and hearing loss. Morbidity and mortality are usually rare, however, failure of diagnosis or prolonged negligence by the patient could increase the likelihood of cholesteatoma or malignant squamous carcinoma. AIM: To investigate the causes of middle ear aural polyps in adult patients selected from Kut and Diwaniyah cit…

Identification of critical windows in early development of human upper respiratory tract and middle ear disease.

Otitis media (OM) or middle ear disease is a prevalent pediatric condition generally related to early growth of the cartilaginous Eustachian tube (CET). This study used a developmental series of dry crania to reconstruct CET and dilator tubae (DT, the muscle opening the CET) morphology. Timing and directionality of CET and upper respiratory tract (URT) growth were investigated. Traditional and 3D geometric morphometrics (GM) were used to assess bony landmarks on the crania. The series was divided using dental eruption into seven growth stages ranging from before eruption of deciduous dentition…

Development of thermosensitive poloxamer 407-based microbubble gel with ultrasound mediation for inner ear drug delivery.

ABSTRACTSOur previous study first investigated feasibility of applying ultrasound (US) and microbubbles (MBs) via external auditory canal to facilitate drug delivery into inner ear. However, most drugs are in aqueous formulae and eliminated via Eustachian tubes after drug application. In this study, feasibility of sustained release of thermosensitive poloxamer 407 (P407)-based MB gel for US mediation-enhanced inner ear drug (dexamethasone, DEX) delivery was investigated. The sol-to-gel transition temperature showed that mixture of DEX and only 10% and 12.5% P407 in MBs can be used for in vitro…

The Pathogenesis of secondary forms of Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED): advancing beyond the audiogram data.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED) can be of a primary or secondary type. To date, a clear pathogenesis of the disease is still not available. Focusing on the secondary forms of AIED, the aim of this review is to (i) assess and describe the hearing involvement in patients affected by autoimmune diseases, (ii) describe the possible association between clinical features (among serological/laboratory data and disease activity/duration) and hearing impairment, (iii) show evidence connecting the AIED types with various etiopathogenetic mechanisms. AREAS COVERED: A PRISMA-compliant s…

Non-Surgical Correction of Congenital Ear Anomalies: A Critical Assessment of Caretaker Burdens and Aesthetic Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital ear anomalies result from cartilage and skin compression in utero. They can be corrected in infancy before the cartilage hardens and loses its malleability. Caretaker burden of ear molding and its impact on esthetic outcomes has not been studied. METHODS: Demographic and procedural variables were retrospectively collected for infants who underwent ear molding. Parents were surveyed regarding their experience, caretaker burden, and esthetic outcome. Outside physicians were provided with pre- and post-treatment photographs and asked to rate outcomes. A Likert scale was …
