From Endemic to Epidemic: A Qualitative District-Level Assessment of an Increase in Malaria Cases in the Elgon Region of Uganda.

With an estimated 5% of global cases, Uganda carries the third-largest burden of malaria. Despite years of focus on malaria by Uganda's Ministry of Health, the malaria incidence rate increased from 206 to 271 cases per 1,000 population between 2012 and 2022. We aimed to identify gaps in malaria prevention, detection, and response in the high-burden Elgon region of Uganda. We collected data from the Ugandan District Health Information Software 2 database to identify districts with the highest incidence of malaria within the Elgon region. We used a structured assessment tool to conduct key infor

Bifurcation and chaotic dynamics in a spatiotemporal epidemic model with delayed optimal control, stochastic process, and sensitivity analysis.

This study introduces an epidemic model with a Beddington-DeAngelis-type incidence rate and Holling type II treatment rate. The Beddington-DeAngelis incidence rate is used to evaluate the effectiveness of inhibitory measures implemented by susceptible and infected individuals. Moreover, the choice of Holling type II treatment rate in our model aims to assess the impact of limited treatment facilities in the context of disease outbreaks. First, the well-posed nature of the model is analyzed, and then, we further investigated the local and global stability analysis along with bifurcation of co-d

Exploring the challenge of diagnosing and tracking Oropouche virus during Brazil's largest recorded dengue epidemic in 2024.

BACKGROUND: In 2024, Brazil experienced its largest dengue virus (DENV) epidemic alongside the widest spread of Oropouche virus (OROV) to date. This scenario may have strongly impacted public health surveillance efforts, as DENV and OROV infections often lead to similar clinical signs and symptoms, making clinical differential diagnosis challenging. Herein, we investigated whether the co-circulation of DENV and OROV in Brazil in 2024 may have hampered OROV detection and tracking, potentially contributing to possible underdiagnosis. METHODS: The number of confirmed cases of dengue and Oropouch

Omadacycline in the treatment of severe Q fever pneumonia during an influenza epidemic: a case report with literature review.

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii (Q fever rickettsiae), is a zoonotic disease with a natural reservoir and has been reported in many countries and regions. Its clinical presentation is non-specific and easily confused with other infectious or non-infectious diseases. Conventional diagnostic methods, such as respiratory specimen culture, often fail to yield conclusive results, increasing the risk of misdiagnosis. This case involves a 78-year-old male patient from Zhejiang Province, China, who presented with fever as the primary complaint and developed severe pneumonia. The diagnosis of H1N1

Research on safety strategies for nucleic acid testing in sudden epidemic conditions based on a SEIARD dynamic model.

Infectious diseases have caused enormous disasters in human society, and asymptomatic carriers are an important challenge in our epidemic prevention and control process. Nucleic acid testing has played an important role in rapid testing for asymptomatic individuals. How to carry out nucleic acid testing in a scientific manner is a practical problem encountered in normal production and life. Based on the real COVID-19 epidemic data from Shanghai, we established a susceptible-exposed-infected-asymptomatic-recovered-death (SEIARD) dynamic model. The least squares method was used to fit the data a

Efficacy evaluation of a bivalent subunit vaccine against epidemic PEDV heterologous strains with low cross-protection.

UNLABELLED: Variant Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), which causes diarrhea and high mortality in piglets, has become a major pathogen, and co-epidemics of different subtypes of the virus have become a very thorny problem for the clinical prevention and control of PEDV. However, cross-protection between epidemic G2a and G2b subtype strains has not been observed, and there is currently no vaccine against both G2a and G2b strains. In this study, we demonstrate the low cross-protection between G2a and G2b strains with piglet immunization and challenge tests. The trimeric full-length S prote…

An ecological examination of early adolescent e-cigarette use: A machine learning approach to understanding a health epidemic.

E-cigarette use among adolescents is a national health epidemic spreading faster than researchers can amass evidence for risk and protective factors and long-term consequences associated with use. New technologies, such as machine learning, may assist prevention programs in identifying at risk youth and potential targets for intervention before adolescents enter developmental periods where e-cigarette use escalates. The present study utilized machine learning algorithms to explore a wide array of individual and socioecological variables in relation to patterns of lifetime e-cigarette use durin

IPEC-J2 Autophagy Induced by TLR4 and NSP6 Interactions Facilitate Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus Replication.

Autophagy is an important cellular response against intracellular pathogens. However, some viruses have evolved mechanisms to hijack this defensive process to provide favorable conditions for virus replication in host cells. The porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has been shown to alter autophagy pathways; however, it is still unknown through which receptors PEDV induces autophagy in IPEC-J2 cells, whether autophagy facilitates PEDV replication, and which functional domains of PEDV proteins are primarily responsible for inducing autophagy. Here, we found that PEDV infection induces autopha

Ending the HIV Epidemic in Metropolitan Atlanta: a mixed-methods study to support the local HIV/AIDS response.

INTRODUCTION: Four counties within the Atlanta, Georgia 20-county eligible metropolitan area (EMA) are currently prioritized by the US "Ending the HIV Epidemic" (EHE) initiative which aims for a 90% reduction in HIV incidence by 2030. Disparities driving Atlanta's HIV epidemic warrant an examination of local service availability, unmet needs and organizational capacity to reach EHE targets. We conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of the Atlanta EMA to examine geographic HIV epidemiology and distribution of services, service needs and organization infrastructure for each pillar of the EHE initi

EPINEST, an agent-based model to simulate epidemic dynamics in large-scale poultry production and distribution networks.

The rapid intensification of poultry production raises important concerns about the associated risks of zoonotic infections. Here, we introduce EPINEST (EPIdemic NEtwork Simulation in poultry Transportation systems): an agent-based modelling framework designed to simulate pathogen transmission within realistic poultry production and distribution networks. We provide example applications to broiler production in Bangladesh, but the modular structure of the model allows for easy parameterization to suit specific countries and system configurations. Moreover, the framework enables the replication

Coinfection with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus and Clostridium perfringens type A enhances disease severity in weaned pigs.

Clostridium perfringens is a constituent of the normal gut microbiome in pigs; however, it can potentially cause pre- and post-weaning diarrhea. Nevertheless, the importance of this bacterium as a primary pathogen of diarrhea in piglets needs to be better understood, and the epidemiology of C. perfringens in Korean pig populations is unknown. To study the prevalence and typing of C. perfringens, 203 fecal samples were collected from diarrheal piglets on 61 swine farms during 2021-2022 and examined for the presence of C. perfringens and enteric viruses, including porcine epidemic diarrhea virus

Epidemiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Slovakia, 2020 - Emergence of an Epidemic USA300 Clone in Community and Hospitals.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of health care-associated infections. Additionally, over the decades, the spread of community-associated (CA-MRSA) clones has become a serious problem. The aim of this study was to gain data on the current epidemiology of MRSA in Slovakia. Between January 2020 and March 2020, single-patient MRSA isolates (invasive and/or colonizing) were collected in Slovakia from hospitalized inpatients (16 hospitals) or outpatients (77 cities). Isolates were characterized via antimicrobial susceptibility testing, spa typing, SCCmec typing,
