A nomogram for predicting overall survival in patients with parathyroid cancer: A novel web-based calculator.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare endocrine malignancy. Considering that clinicians develop appropriate treatment strategies based on patients' survival expectations. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a survival prediction model to guide clinical decision-making. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 362 parathyroid carcinoma patients diaagnosed in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2004 and 2015. Correlations between outcome events and variables were analyzed using univariate and multifactorial Cox regression, and variables screened b

Factor structure and internal consistency of the ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tool Parent Version (ICAST-P) in a cross-country pooled data set in nine Balkan countries.

OBJECTIVE: Researchers are increasingly using parental report measures in population-based surveys of violence against children. No research thus far has examined the factor structure of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) Child Abuse Screening Tool Parent Version (ICAST-P), a non-commercialized measure for prevalence studies. METHODS: This paper uses secondary data from the Balkan Epidemiological Study on Child Abuse and Neglect (BECAN) which included 25,202 primary caregivers of school-going children in three grades (aged 11, 13 and 16). Primary

Genetic epidemiology approach to estimating birth incidence and current disease prevalence for rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata.

BACKGROUND: Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is an inherited ultra-rare disease which results in severely impaired physical and mental development. Mutations in one of five genes involved in plasmalogen biosynthesis have been reported to drive disease pathology. Estimates of disease incidence have been extremely challenging due to the rarity of the disorder, preventing an understanding of the unmet medical need. To address this, we have prepared a disease incidence and prevalence model based on genetic epidemiology approaches to estimate the total number of RCDP patients affected, a

A transcriptomic study for identifying cardia- and non-cardia-specific gastric cancer prognostic factors using genetic algorithm-based methods.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a heterogeneous tumour with numerous differences of epidemiologic and clinicopathologic features between cardia cancer and non-cardia cancer. However, few studies were performed to construct site-specific GC prognostic models. In this study, we identified site-specific GC transcriptomic prognostic biomarkers using genetic algorithm (GA)-based support vector machine (GA-SVM) and GA-based Cox regression method (GA-Cox) in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The area under time-dependent receive operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) regarding 5-year survival and c

Association of a four-gene model with allergic diseases: Two-year follow-up of a birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study has developed a four-gene model involving IL13 rs20541, IL4 rs2243250, ADRB2 rs1042713, and FCER1B rs569108 associated with asthma and atopy in Chinese Han children. However, whether the gene model is associated with allergies in early life has yet to be determined. This study aimed to apply the gene model in a birth cohort to investigate its associations with the development of allergic diseases in Chinese Han toddlers. METHODS: Five hundred and ninety-seven children from a birth cohort completing 2-year follow-up were included. Epidemiologic information and co

Development and Evaluation of a Prediction Model for Ascertaining Rheumatic Heart Disease Status in Administrative Data.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has raised substantial concerns regarding the validity of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) codes (ICD-10 I05-I09) for rheumatic heart disease (RHD) due to likely misclassification of non-rheumatic valvular disease (non-rheumatic VHD) as RHD. There is currently no validated, quantitative approach for reliable case ascertainment of RHD in administrative hospital data. METHODS: A comprehensive dataset of validated Australian RHD cases was compiled and linked to inpatient hospital records with an RHD ICD code

Neisseria gonorrhoeae Transmission Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: An Anatomical Site-Specific Mathematical Model Evaluating the Potential Preventive Impact of Mouthwash.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhoea notifications are rapidly rising in men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed a model to assess mouthwash as a novel intervention for gonorrhoea control. METHODS: We developed a model of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) transmission to explain anatomic site-specific prevalence of gonorrhoea among MSM. The model was calibrated to available epidemiological and behavioral data. We estimated the contribution of various sexual acts to gonorrhoea incidence and evaluate the potential impacts of screening scale-up and utilization of mouthwash on the gonorrhoea epidemic. RESULTS:

Building Ventilation as an Effective Disease Intervention Strategy in a Dense Indoor Contact Network in an Ideal City.

Emerging diseases may spread rapidly through dense and large urban contact networks, especially they are transmitted by the airborne route, before new vaccines can be made available. Airborne diseases may spread rapidly as people visit different indoor environments and are in frequent contact with others. We constructed a simple indoor contact model for an ideal city with 7 million people and 3 million indoor spaces, and estimated the probability and duration of contact between any two individuals during one day. To do this, we used data from actual censuses, social behavior surveys, building

Development of the Respiratory Index of Severity in Children (RISC) score among young children with respiratory infections in South Africa.

OBJECTIVE: Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in children worldwide. A simple clinical score predicting the probability of death in a young child with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) could aid clinicians in case management and provide a standardized severity measure during epidemiologic studies. METHODS: We analyzed 4,148 LRTI hospitalizations in children <24 months enrolled in a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine trial in South Africa from 1998-2001, to develop the Respiratory Index of Severity in Children (RISC). Using clinical data at admission, a multivariable logistic regression

The development of an age-structured model for trachoma transmission dynamics, pathogenesis and control.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma, the worldwide leading infectious cause of blindness, is due to repeated conjunctival infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. The effects of control interventions on population levels of infection and active disease can be promptly measured, but the effects on severe ocular sequelae require long-term monitoring. We present an age-structured mathematical model of trachoma transmission and disease to predict the impact of interventions on the prevalence of blinding trachoma. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The model is based on the concept of multiple reinfections leading to

Evaluation of rotavirus, pneumococcal conjugate and human papillomavirus vaccination in four Pacific island countries: A cost-effectiveness modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of rotavirus vaccine (RVV), pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and human papillomavirus vaccine (HPVV) has been slow in Pacific Island Countries, particularly among middle-income countries. To assist decision-making on the simultaneous introduction of these three vaccines, cost-effectiveness and budget impact evaluations were undertaken in Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, using locally relevant data. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A proportionate outcomes model was used to evaluate vaccine introduction in each country from a health systems perspective, using country-spe

Machine-learning based exploration of determinants of gray matter volume in the KORA-MRI study.

To identify the most important factors that impact brain volume, while accounting for potential collinearity, we used a data-driven machine-learning approach. Gray Matter Volume (GMV) was derived from magnetic resonance imaging (3T, FLAIR) and adjusted for intracranial volume (ICV). 93 potential determinants of GMV from the categories sociodemographics, anthropometric measurements, cardio-metabolic variables, lifestyle factors, medication, sleep, and nutrition were obtained from 293 participants from a population-based cohort from Southern Germany. Elastic net regression was used to identify t

Pain is a common problem affecting clinical outcomes in adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: As the cystic fibrosis (CF) population has aged, many chronic health problems have emerged, including diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Previous studies have suggested that pain is common in patients with CF; however, little is known about the factors associated with it or its impact on clinical outcomes. We hypothesized that pain is common, is associated with psychologic distress, and adversely affects clinical outcomes. METHODS: From February 1, 2008, to April 3, 2008, adults with CF from Johns Hopkins Hospital were surveyed about their pain. Outcomes were assessed for 12 mont

Persistent disparities in head and neck cancer survival in the United States.

PURPOSE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a heterogenous disease with substantial mortality. This study assesses the long-term epidemiologic landscape, demographic disparities, and survival outcomes of HNC. METHODS: Adult patients with primary HNC were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database by International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) codes. The primary outcomes of this study were overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Secondary outcomes included primary tumor site distributions and rates of surgery by race and ethnici

Why does scabies persist despite effective treatment? Coordination failure, Nash equilibrium, and replicator dynamics.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies remains a persistent global public health problem despite the availability of effective treatments, including topical permethrin, benzyl benzoate, crotamiton, and systemic ivermectin. This paper develops a formal economic-epidemiological framework using game theory to explain persistence through coordination failure and Nash equilibrium. METHODS: Household treatment decisions are modeled as a coordination game under imperfect information, treatment costs, and reinfection externalities. The analysis is further extended using an evolutionary replicator dynamics framework t

Epidemiological status of bovine viral diarrhea virus in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): A global systematic review and meta-analysis.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) remains a neglected viral disease in water buffalo despite its significant economic impact in production systems. Although limited epidemiological studies have been reported worldwide, the serostatus and active infection in buffalo have not been systematically reviewed. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to estimate BVDV prevalence in water buffalo and identify associated epidemiological factors. Relevant studies published up to January 31, 2026, were retrieved from five electronic databases. A total of 49 studies were identified from 15 dif

Parvovirus B19-associated arthropathy: a contemporary narrative review.

Parvovirus B19 is a common and frequently under-recognised cause of acute-onset inflammatory polyarthropathy in adults, with a clinical phenotype that can closely mimic early rheumatoid arthritis. This review synthesises the adult-focused literature on epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategy, and management of parvovirus B19-associated arthropathy, with attention to the renewed circulation observed in recent years and its implications for clinical practice. In adults, joint involvement typically manifests as abrupt, painful, symmetric polyarticular disease

Wild bird parasites in the Atlantic Forest: diversity and prevalence across forested and anthropogenic landscapes.

Wild birds are important for public health, as they have epidemiological characteristics that make them host species for the transmission and maintenance of several pathogens, either as reservoirs or by the dispersal of infected arthropod vectors. Recently, several bird species have been used as model organisms in several scientific studies. Investigations have used wild bird populations as bioindicators and sentinels to identify changes in habitat quality, exposure to chemical pollutants, and disease surveillance. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and diversity of

Climate change, environmental exposures, and pediatric asthma exacerbations: air pollution, temperature, and relative humidity.

The prevalence of pediatric asthma exacerbations (AEs) has risen alongside climate change, yet how climate change modifies these exposures to raise pediatric AEs remains unclear. This review synthesizes epidemiological and mechanistic evidence on the contribution of air pollution, temperature, and relative humidity (RH) to pediatric AEs under climate change, drawing on a narrative search of PubMed and Web of Science (2000-2025) prioritizing systematic reviews, epidemiological studies, and climate-attribution/modeling studies. Climate change intensifies environmental drivers of AEs, to which ch
