The effect of intracranial use of an ultrasonic surgical aspirator on major cerebral vessels and nervous tissue was studied in anesthetised adult cats. Experiments were performed without suction in order to investigate only the effect of ultrasonic emulsification. The flow rate of irrigation saline over the tip of the ultrasonic aspirator was set at either slow (4 ml/min) or fast (24 ml/min). Flow in the common carotid artery and superior sagittal sinus was studied by ultrasonic Doppler flowmetry during direct or indirect (intermediated by muscle fragment) application to the vessels of ultraso

Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were record … on responses correlated well with the latencies in the EMGs obtained through sound stimulation. The evoked potentials after auditory and electrical stimulation were obtained in several nuclei in the brainstem. The conduction time between two nuclei was calculated by measuring the latency of discharges in each nucleus. The alteration of the evoked discharge was obse …

Results are presented which confirm that in human albinos each cerebral hemisphere receives a predominantly monocular input from the contralateral eye, giving rise to an asymmetry of the visual evoked potential (VEP) to whole-field stimulation which is similar to that for stimulation of the temporal half-field in the same individual. The further finding of two distinct, and in some respects opposite, types of topographical asymmetry raises the possibility that there are two anatomically distinct variants in the retinocortical projection in human albinism, as there are in the Siamese cat.

Generalized corticoreticular epilepsy was established in adult cats by parenteral penicillin, and electroencephalographic monitoring was carried out. Ketamine HCl was injected intravenously in doses of 2.5 to 20 mg per kilogram. If doses of penicillin were inadequate to establish typical spike-wave activity, ketamine induced the spike-wave pattern typical of much higher doses of penicillin. At doses of penicillin that established the spike-wave pattern, ketamine potentiated the spike-wave activity and sometimes induced spike-and-wave status. These findings suggest caution in the clinical use o

The photopic electroretinogram (ERG) and the brightness visually evoked cortical potentials (HEPs) were recorded from patients with oedema of the optic disc caused by papillitis (7 patients), by vascular disease (10 patients) and by intracranial hypertension. For the ERG a Henkes-electrode in reference to an earlobe electrode was used. The H-EPs were recorded bipolar in the midline 5% to 25% and unipolar 15% in reference to an earlobe electrode (inion to nasion = 100%). For evaluation the amplitudes and the peaktimes of the a- and b-wave of the ERG were measured. In the H-EPs the amplitudes an

The neurophysiological findings obtained with standard electromyography (EMG) and single fiber EMG (SFEMG) in a case of hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HoPP) are reported. During the period between paralytic attacks the only abnormalities consisted of scanty fibrillation potentials and, with SFEMG, a fiber density increase. In the first stage of an induced paralytic attack the most striking feature was decrease in fiber density, slight increase in jitter with several blocks. These results indicate a failure of the membrane surface to propagate an action potential. In some fibers the block is l

A case is presented of cortical blindness in cranial arteritis. A clinical diagnosis at the time of presentation was based on the integrity of the pupillary light reflex and the absence of visually evoked responses. Pathological examination confirmed bilateral occipital infarction. This report stresses the need for recognizing this presentation of cranial arteritis and initiating immediate treatment.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated neurocognitive mechanisms of pain-related attentional control in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
METHODS: By simultaneously recording eye movements and event-related potentials (ERPs), we examined pain-related attentional control in a sample with chronic musculoskeletal pain (N = 26) and a matched pain-free control group (N = 26). Using an adapted go/no-go paradigm, the go condition required participants to focus on pain or neutral images to measure attention engagement while the no-go condition required inhibiting attention toward these images to me

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have reported electrophysiological differences between concussed and non-concussed groups, but few studies have systematically explored recovery trajectories from acute concussion to symptom recovery and the transition from acute concussion to prolonged phases. Questions remain about recovery prognosis and the extent to which symptom resolution coincides with injury resolution. This study therefore investigated the electrophysiological differences in recoveries between simple and complex concussion.
METHODS: Student athletes with acute concussion from a previous stud

Insight into the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying development of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) will provide a foundation for improved therapies. We studied a model in which an episode of prolonged seizures is followed by recovery lasting two weeks before emergence of spontaneous recurrent seizures. We focused on the interval between the prolonged seizures and the late onset recurrent seizures. We investigated the hippocampal mossy fiber CA3 pyramidal cell microcircuit in models spanning in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo preparations. Expression of channelrhodopsin-2 in the dentate granul

BACKGROUND: The measurement of ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (oVEMP) is a novel method for investigating vestibular function. Stimulus and recording techniques vary in the literature. A standardized test procedure is desirable in order to ensure repeatable results.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the magnitude and repeatability of the asymmetry ratio (AR) of oVEMPs in response to low-frequency bone conducted vibration (BCV) applied to the forehead and vertex in a healthy population.
METHODS: 20 healthy subjects were tested three times by stimulating with 125 Hz BCV at the forehead a

INTERVENTION: All patients underwent two cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential tests at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 Hz with a minimum test interval of 3 months.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Thresho
