In recent years our knowledge of the genetic mechanisms behind animal development has increased exponentially, and it has become apparent that these mechanisms have been conserved to an astonishing extent during evolution. In this review some important groups of developmental regulatory genes are introduced, and their roles are discussed in the context of craniofacial morphogenesis. Transcription factors regulating both the identity and patterning of embryonic structures and the development of individual organs are often called master regulatory genes. These genes, as well as other transcripti

Recently the molecular identification of the major electroneutral sodium-potassium-chloride entry mechanisms present on apical membranes of distal nephron segments of the mammalian kidney, on basolateral membranes of many non-renal epithelial cells and on certain non-epithelial tissues has been achieved. These transporters represent a major pathway for cellular uptake of chloride critical for chloride absorptive and secretory processes and for cell volume regulation following cell shrinkage. In the mammalian kidney, these sodium-coupled chloride cotransporters represent the major target sites

We have used a combination of chromosome sorting, degenerate oligonucleotide-primed polymerase chain reaction (DOP-PCR), chromosome painting and digital image capturing and processing techniques for comparative chromosome analysis of members of the genus Muntiacus. Chromosome-specific "paints" from a female Indian muntjac were hybridised to the metaphase chromosomes of the Gongshan, Black, and Chinese muntjac by both single and three colour chromosome painting. Karyotypes and idiograms for the Indian, Gongshan, Black and Chinese muntjac were constructed, based on enhanced 4', 6-diamidino-2-phe

Hepatitis delta virus is a defective human infectious agent which causes severe hepatic damage in hepatitis B virus-infected patients. Although prophylactic steps and the development, in certain countries, of efficient vaccination programs against hepatitis B virus have led to a diminution of the incidence rate of this disease, hepatitis D is still an important health problem. Hepatitis D infection is therefore associated with a worse clinical evolution than hepatitis B infection alone. On the other hand, the different therapeutic strategies being assayed at present including the use of interf

The reactivity of sera from acute-phase intestinal amoebiasis patients (two weeks evolution) was studied to determine which of the Entamoeba histolytica antigens are most frequently immunogenic. Sera were examined by means of immunoelectrotransferase assay using crude extract of HM1:IMSS E. histolytica trophozoites. Three populations of clinically healthy adults from Mexico, Canada and Germany, with no evidence of parasites in faeces, were used as controls. The frequency of antigen recognition was analysed. In ailing individuals, the bands of 23, 24, 26 and 51 kDa were recognized most frequent

Amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation is targeted with small molecules as a pathway toward developing potential Alzheimer's disease (AD) therapies. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol, has been proposed as an inhibitor of Aβ aggregation, but its mechanistic effects across distinct Aβ42 aggregates remain unresolved. To better evaluate resveratrol's potential to treat AD, here we focus on molecular-level insights into the mechanisms that underlie its interaction with several distinct classes of Aβ42 aggregates. In contrast to published approaches that are based on monitoring the evolution of the total fibril

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the digestive tract, are primarily driven by gain-of-function mutations in the receptor tyrosine kinases KIT or PDGFRA. The introduction of imatinib, a selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), revolutionized the management of advanced GIST. However, the emergence of drug resistance remains a major clinical challenge, limiting long-term efficacy. Resistance mechanisms are multifactorial, predominantly involving secondary mutations in KIT or PDGFRA that impair TKI binding or stabilize the kinase in an active conf

Targeted Protein Degradation (TPD) has emerged as a transformative paradigm in drug discovery, offering a robust strategy to address "undruggable" targets. This study presents the first 25-year longitudinal scientometric analysis (2001-2025) of the TPD field, integrating data from 2750 publications across the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and PubMed to map the global research landscape and therapeutic innovations. The results indicate that TPD research entered an explosive growth phase post-2016. China leads in publication volume (1247 papers), while the USA maintains dominance in ci

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) represents an increasingly recognized but historically underdiagnosed cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy and heart failure. CA is now understood to be more prevalent, particularly in older adults, as advancements in imaging and biomarker technologies have improved detection. The disease results from the misfolding of precursor proteins, primarily immunoglobulin light chains (in light chain (AL) amyloidosis) or transthyretin (in transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis), into insoluble fibrils that deposit in myocardial tissue. These deposits cause structural and functional ca

Among mammals, injury to the heart typically results in scar formation and diminished cardiovascular function. In contrast, some teleost fish and salamanders can replace damaged heart tissue and restore overall function. For most species, however, less is known. Here, we investigate cardiac self-repair in an amniote capable of multi-tissue regeneration, the leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius). To create a heart lesion, we placed a liquid nitrogen-cooled metal probe directly onto the ventricle. The result was a cryoinjury to ~20% of the ventricle. Cardiac cryoinjury induced localized cardiac

BACKGROUND: The rapid evolution of Influenza A(H3N2) requires constant global monitoring. This study analyzes the genomic characteristics and the first introduction of the emerging subclade K (J.2.4.1) in Ecuador, utilizing publicly available data to trace its intercontinental movement.
METHODS: The hemagglutinin (HA) protein of an Influenza A(H3N2) strain isolated from an Ecuadorian patient was analyzed. A Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction was performed using BEAST v1.10.4 with 251 global sequences. A molecular clock was applied to estimate the time of most recent common ancestor (TMRCA).

Lung cancer is characterized by profound molecular and clinical heterogeneity and remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Its initiation and progression are shaped by complex genetic and epigenetic alterations that perturb key biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, metabolic reprogramming, invasion, metastasis, and immune evasion. Increasing evidence indicates that dysregulated alternative splicing (AS) represents a critical post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism involved in lung cancer pathogenesis. Although AS abnormalities are not the sole

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) represent a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic diseases sharing ineffective hematopoiesis, cytopenias, and a high risk of evolution to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The current MDS classification systems, such as the International Consensus Classification (ICC) and the WHO 2022 classification, have incorporated molecular and cytogenetic markers to improve the stratification of risk and guide therapy. However, treatment options for high-risk MDS (HR-MDS) remain limited, with hypomethylating agents (HMAs) providing only modest survival benefits. Emerging

In this article, the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (1,3-DC) reactions between 4-acyl-1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones fused at the [e]-side with a heterocyclic moiety (FPDs) and diphenylnitrone are studied using Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) at different computational levels. An analysis of the global reactivity descriptors has determined the role of the reagents. FPDs will act as electrophiles, while diphenylnitrone will be a nucleophile. It was found that the reactions proceed according to a one-step but asynchronous mechanism. Additionally, based on the Bonding Evolution Theory (BET) analysis o

Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) catalyzes oxygen (O2) reduction at the heme a3-CuB site in the transmembrane region of the enzyme. It has been proposed that the hydrophobic channel that connects the transmembrane surface of subunit III through subunit I to the heme a3-CuB site is the O2 transfer pathway. Gas molecules other than O2, including carbon dioxide (CO2) generated in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, should also enter the hydrophobic channel, but it is not clear how these molecules are expelled from CcO. We analyzed the crystal structures of CO2-, nitrous oxide-, and Xe-bound bovine CcO in the

INTRODUCTION: Robertsonian translocations (ROBs) or centric fusions of acrocentric chromosomes are the most common structural chromosomal rearrangements in mammals. ROBs are of medical and veterinary concern because of associated subfertility and congenital disorders but are also of interest as a mechanism of chromosome and karyotype evolution. While ROBs are well documented in humans, mice, and cattle/bovids, they are extremely rare in horses, despite the 18 acrocentric chromosomes in the horse karyotype.
METHODS: We characterize the case using conventional and molecular cytogenetic approach
