Cardioembolic stroke due to tumor emboli is a rare complication of neoplasm. A patient with metastatic cardiac liposarcoma who suffered from embolic stroke is reported. Autopsy confirmed that the cardiac tumor was a metastatic liposarcoma from the retroperitoneum, and the cerebral vessel was occluded by tumor cells and fibrin clot.

We report findings from an autopsy of a 45-year-old woman with the rare lysosomal storage disease mucolipidosis type III α/β. Her disease manifested most notably as multiple bone and cartilage problems with tracheal and bronchial malacia. Principal autopsy findings included gross abnormalities in bone and cartilage with corresponding microscopic cytoplasmic lysosomal granules. These cytoplasmic granules were also seen in histologic preparations of the brain, myocardium, heart valves, and fibroblasts of the liver and skin by light and electron microscopy. By electron microscopy there were scatt

We report a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) in which the patient had been diagnosed with severe obliterative bronchitis. A 29-year-old woman was admitted with a high fever and a widespread vesicular rash. She was diagnosed with SJS and betamethasone administration was started. After one month, her vesicular skin rash improved; however, she developed respiratory failure and was assisted with mechanical ventilation. Computed tomography of the chest demonstrated a hyperlucent lung with narrowing of the peripheral vessels. Bronchoscopy revealed an occlusion of the bronchus when the patient

Inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IMC) is a specific type of rare, very aggressive, and highly metastatic mammary cancer in both human beings and dogs. A 10-year-old female spayed Shih Tzu dog was diagnosed with secondary IMC. At necropsy, brain metastasis of mammary neoplastic cells was observed in tissues of the cerebrum and cerebellum. Metastases were also found in other distant organs such as heart, lung, liver, spleen, and inguinal lymph node. There is limited data about the metastasis of IMC and its pattern. The current report of IMC with brain metastases contributes to the understanding o

Pacemakers devaluate the accuracy of the electrocardiogram (ECG) for the diagnosis of myocardial ischaemia. We present the case of a 53-year-old man with ischaemic cardiomyopathy and acute chest pain. Besides biventricular pacing, new ST-segment elevations were present leading to the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. However, no ECG criteria for the diagnosis of myocardial ischaemia in biventricular-paced rhythm are available.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is usually self-limited, but some fulminant cases are fatal, even when occurring in previously healthy individuals. It can also be the cause of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of OPSI in a 41-year-old woman with hypersplenism associated with hepatitis B cirrhosis. We detected a significant Mycoplasma pneumoniae agglutination titer, but no evidence of infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionnella spp., or any other bacterial or fungal pathogens. She eventually died despite aggressive therapy.

A large intracardiac mass is a rare condition and one with an extremely high risk of haemodynamic and embolic complications. Urgent surgical excision is the treatment of choice, and the histological examination reveals the exact nature of the mass, usually a myxoma or a thrombus. We present the case of an 80-year-old woman, with a history of atrial fibrillation, who was admitted because of a seriously impaired level of consciousness, and fever. A large cerebral infarct and a urinary tract infarction were diagnosed. On the transthoracic echocardiogram a giant, free-floating mass was detected in

This case report describes congestive heart failure with pleural effusion in two middle-aged, pet house rabbits. Both had a history of acute onset dyspnoea, weakness and weight loss. Bi-atrial enlargement was seen on echocardiography in both rabbits. One rabbit had atrial fibrillation and ventricular premature complexes identified on electrocardiography. There was a radiographically evident pleural effusion in both rabbits and thoracocentesis was undertaken in one rabbit. These findings were confirmed on post-mortem examination. The aetiology for the underlying heart disease was not found, but

We present a 72-year-old man and a known hypertensive with poor drug compliance seen here on 22-03-06,with a 4-year history of progressive dyspnoea, associated with cough and a wheeze. On examination he was chronically ill looking with altered state of consciousness, pale, centrally cyanosed, febrile (T-38 degrees C), in respiratory distress (RR-33pm). Significant chest radiological findings include marked aortic unfolding and cardiomegaly, with biventricular involvement. Numerous nodular opacities in both lung fields especially the Right side with right apical opacification/thickening. Treatm

Mirtazapine, escitalopram, and valproic acid are newer antidepressant drugs than traditional tricyclic antidepressants and are supposed to be less toxic. Nevertheless, intoxication cases due to their overdosage have been repeatedly reported. In the case presently reported, a 64-year-old woman with a previous history of chronic depression was found dead in her apartment. Several packages of pharmaceutical drugs were found, including mirtazapine, escitalopram, and valproic acid. During the autopsy, no evidence of natural disease or trauma was found to account for this death. In order to determin

Pseudorabies is caused by Suid herpesvirus 1, a member of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily. Although pigs are the natural host of Pseudorabies virus (PRV), the virus has a broad host range and may cause fatal encephalitis in many species. The United States obtained PRV-free status in 2004 after the virus was eradicated from domestic swineherds, but the virus is still present in feral swine populations. The current report describes PRV infection in 3 dogs that were used to hunt feral swine. The dogs developed clinical signs including facial pruritus with facial abrasions, dyspnea, vomiting, dia

Mycotic encephalitis caused severe ataxia and other neurologic deficits in a horse. The finding of a single, large focus of cerebral malacia, with histopathologic evidence of fungal elements, suggested infection was a result of direct transfer from the frontal sinuses, rather than hematogenous spread from the guttural pouch.

BACKGROUND: Historically, 50% of spontaneously expelled abortuses have been thought to be chromosomally abnormal; about 60% are trisomies. In general, trisomy 16 is the most frequent chromosomal abnormality, followed by trisomy 21 and trisomy 22. So far only 1 case of a female fetus with multiple congenital malformations associated with full trisomy 5 has been described.
REPORT: We present a case of de novo full trisomy 5 in a spontaneous abortion sample. A young couple with normal constitutional karyotype experienced the second spontaneous abortion at 9 weeks of gestation, with the cytogenet

We present a case of a 64-year-old man with a prolonged history of fatigue, weight loss, fever, and kidney failure. Kidney biopsy showed severe granulomatous interstitial nephritis with numerous giant cells. Silver stains identified fungal micro-organisms consistent with Histoplasma species. Despite antifungal treatment, the patient died of overwhelming infection a few weeks later. This report emphasizes the importance of diagnosing histoplasmosis early. A high degree of suspicion is required to make the diagnosis of histoplasmosis in a case of granulomatous interstitial nephritis.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a rare inherited disease of the heart muscle that causes ventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden death in young people and athletes. It results in fibrofatty replacement of the right ventricle, and the subepicardial region of the left ventricle. It is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people after hypertrophic heart disease. Diagnosis can be difficult and at present there is no cure for ARVC. Prevention of sudden death is the most important management strategy. Paediatricians need to be aware of the possibility of A

Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) is an autosomal recessive disorder of immune regulation that leads to a hyperinflammatory syndrome responsible for fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia, and coagulopathy. Although presentation usually occurs in early infancy, antenatal presentation is extremely rare. To our knowledge, we are first to report genetically confirmed FHL in 2 consecutive siblings who presented with hydrops fetalis that led to spontaneous intrauterine death at 38 and 30 weeks of gestation. Because the diagnosis of FHL has important implications for genetic counseling

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is considered a wild reservoir of many zoonotical diseases, particularly VL. This study reported the presence of Leishmania infantum amastigotes in different organs of one captive C. thous found dead in a zoo. This animal was positive by the indirect fluorescence antibody test and had many clinical signs of VL. Intracellular amastigote forms of L. infantum were seen in neutrophils and macrophages in sample tissues from skin, lymph nodes (popliteal, submandibular, prescapular, an
