Based on the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) recommendations, the questionnaire included a diabetes risk assessment. The risk of diabetes was 76.3% among participants with a family history of diabetes. There is a 41.1% chance of diabetes among those participants whose fathers had diabetes, and a …

'I feel like my house was taken away from me': Parents' experiences of having home adaptations for their medically complex, technology-dependent child.

Technology-dependent children are a sub-population of seriously ill children with life-limiting conditions who are being cared for at home by their families. Although home-based care has been the model of care for these children since the late 1980s, there is a paucity of literature about parents' experiences of having home adaptations made to enable their home to be a place of care for their child. Using the findings from auto-driven photo-elicitation interviews conducted between August 2017 and June 2018 with 12 parents (10 mothers and 2 fathers) who have a technology-dependent child (aged 5…

Parents' Experiences of Having a Child with Down Syndrome and Sleep Difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders are prevalent in children with Down Syndrome (DS). However, sleep treatment is not always readily accessed by this group. Evolution of the World Health Organization semen analysis manual: where are we?

The WHO (World Health Organization) manuals provide state-of-the-art guidance on how a semen analysis should be carried out. The much anticipated sixth edition of the WHO semen analysis manual has been released 10 years after its previous version and includes essential updates, such as new reference standards for semen volume and microscopic sperm characteristics of recent fathers. A well-conducted semen analysis remains an essential foundation of the infertility evaluation process and affects patient referral, diagnosis and treatment. However, a male infertility work-up primarily based on rou…

A Case-Control Study on the Effects of Plasticizers Exposure on Male Fertility.

Male infertility is a serious concern for public health, and the possible role of exposure to plasticizers such as phthalates and bisphenol A in contributing to the condition is widely debated. We have herein enrolled 155 infertility cases attending an infertility center and 211 controls (fathers of a spontaneously conceived newborn) to investigate this issue. The urinary levels of seven phthalates and BPA were analyzed through HPLC/MS/MS. All data were statistically elaborated considering information about clinical situation, life habits, occupational activity, and, for cases, semen parameter…

A Narrative Review of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and Its Effects on and Benefits for Low Birth Weight (LBW) Babies.

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a preventative, economical method for infants with low birth weight (LBW). KMC benefits LBW infants in a number of ways. This review standpoints the effect of KMC on the weight gain of LBW neonates. KMC also improves breastfeeding rates during the hospital stay as well as at home. KMC can be provided not only by mothers but also by fathers and other adults in the family. However, it is not routinely practiced in hospitals. Short-term and long-term KMC is beneficial for survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and mother-infant bonding. Preterm infants are more l…

Home environmental change for child injury prevention in Nepal: A qualitative study.

In Nepal, unintentional home injury is a leading reason for death and disability among pre-school children. However, there is a lack of evidence to inform culturally appropriate interventions to reduce home injuries. This study explored the potential for home environmental change at a community level to prevent unintentional home injury in children and identified the barriers to, and facilitators of, such changes. Focus groups were conducted in the Nepali language with mothers, fathers, teachers, school students and community health volunteers in rural areas of Makwanpur district in Nepal. The…
