Inflammation, sanitation, and consternation: loss of contact with coevolved, tolerogenic microorganisms and the pathophysiology and treatment of major depression.

CONTEXT: Inflammation is increasingly recognized as contributing to the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD), even in individuals who are otherwise medically healthy. Most studies in search of sources for this increased inflammation have focused on factors such as psychosocial stress and obesity that are known to activate inflammatory processes and increase the risk for depression. However, MDD may be so prevalent in the modern world not just because proinflammatory factors are widespread, but also because we have lost contact with previously available sources of anti-inflammatory,

Emerging Diseases: A Global and Biological Perspective.

The 'Livestock Revolution' and globalization with enormous increases in free trade of animals and food products are not a choice but a reality (Thiermann, J. Vet. Med. Educ., 28, 2001, 56). Conditions of modern life, some of them related to or being the result of globalization, ensure that factors responsible for disease emergence are more prevalent than ever. Categorization of the factors is somewhat arbitrary but are representative of the underlying processes that cause emergence. Major responsible factors include ecological changes, such as changes due to agriculture or economic development

Investigations of Possible Multistate Outbreaks of Salmonella, Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes Infections - United States, 2016.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), and Listeria monocytogenes are the leading causes of multistate foodborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Responding to multistate outbreaks quickly and effectively and applying lessons learned about outbreak sources, modes of transmission, and risk factors for infection can prevent additional outbreak-associated illnesses and save lives. This report summarizes the investigations of multistate outbreaks and possible outbreaks of Salmonella, STEC, and L. monocytogenes infections coordinated by CDC during the 2

Effect of heat and homogenization on in vitro digestion of milk.

Central to commercial fluid milk processing is the use of high temperature, short time (HTST) pasteurization to ensure the safety and quality of milk, and homogenization to prevent creaming of fat-containing milk. Ultra-high-temperature sterilization is also applied to milk and is typically used to extend the shelf life of refrigerated, specialty milk products or to provide shelf-stable milk. The structures of the milk proteins and lipids are affected by processing but little information is available on the effects of the individual processes or sequences of processes on digestibility. In this

Research: Evaluation of Orthopedic Hip Device Recalls by the FDA from 2007 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Medical device recalls have increased in the previous two decades. Orthopedic devices are estimated to constitute 12% of all medical devices recalled. Medical devices enter the market via the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) premarket approval (PMA) or 510(k) pathways. This article evaluates orthopedic hip device recalls between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2017. We hypothesized that the 510(k) approval process would have substantially higher recall rates for defective devices. METHODS: The FDA's device recall database was queried for all orthopedic hip devices from Jan. 1, 20

Diet-vaccine interactions: SQM Iron and Salmonella vaccination shape poultry gut microbiota.

UNLABELLED: Vaccines to prevent Salmonella are rapidly gaining traction in the poultry industry. Yet how these interventions interact with other management strategies to influence the broader gut microbial community, rather than Salmonella per se, remains poorly understood. Understanding these effects is critical because shifts in the microbiome can alter nutrient metabolism, immune function, and pathogen dynamics in ways that could either enhance or suppress management strategies aimed at improving bird health and food safety. Here, we examine how a live-attenuated Salmonella vaccine (AviPro

Molecular properties of plant-based proteins for alternative protein.

Alternative proteins, or alt proteins, are proteins obtained from non-animal sources like plant sources, meat cultured in labs, and other sources like fungi and insects. These contain a variety of benefits and are gaining popularity worldwide. Some chronic diseases require a low-red-meat diet, which can be fulfilled through alternative proteins, providing similar benefits to those of animal-based proteins. This chapter deals with the sustainability aspect of using alternative proteins. A sustainable protein refers to a protein that is efficient in terms of health benefits, taste, environmental

Activity-based anorexia animal model: a review of the main neurobiological findings.

BACKGROUND: The genesis of anorexia nervosa (AN), a severe eating disorder with a pervasive effect on many brain functions such as attention, emotions, reward processing, cognition and motor control, has not yet been understood. Since our current knowledge of the genetic aspects of AN is limited, we are left with a large and diversified number of biological, psychological and environmental risk factors, called into question as potential triggers of this chronic condition with a high relapse rate. One of the most valid and used animal models for AN is the activity-based anorexia (ABA), which re

Non-Thermal and Mild Thermal Technologies for Table Egg Shell Surface Decontamination: Microbial Efficacy, Egg Quality, and Industrial Considerations.

Microbial contamination of table eggs remains an important food safety concern, largely due to the presence of Salmonella spp. on eggshell surfaces and the potential for cross-contamination along the collection, grading, and packing chain. Conventional sanitation practices, including chlorinated-water washing, can reduce surface microbial loads but may also present limitations related to cuticle alteration, process variability, water use, and the risk of recontamination when operational conditions are not tightly controlled. This review synthesizes evidence on non-thermal and selected mild the

Nucleus accumbens medial shell D1 and D2 medium spiny neurons signal the valence of conditioned stimuli in a sex-dependent manner.

Assigning valence to stimuli supports survival by promoting approach of stimuli associated with beneficial outcomes and avoidance of those associated with noxious outcomes, a process dysregulated in many psychiatric disorders. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) uses valence information to guide appropriate behavioral responses. NAc medium spiny neurons (MSNs) expressing D1 and D2 dopamine receptors have long been thought to play opponent roles in valence processing, although this has been challenged by recent work. To test this, we used fiber photometry Ca2+ imaging to record from D1 and D2 MSNs in t

Adapting to life with removable dentures in Japan: A qualitative study of patients' daily experiences.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss affects not only oral function but also sociopsychological well-being. Although quantitative studies have assessed these effects, patients' subjective experiences remain underexplored. This study qualitatively described the daily denture adaptation process, identifying difficulties, coping strategies, and the dentists' role in providing foundational knowledge for patient support. METHODS: Using reflexive thematic analysis, 11 participants (aged 18+) with current or past denture experience were recruited from a domiciliary dental clinic. Data were collected through semi-

Genomic epidemiology of Salmonella and Campylobacter in poultry production: Quantifying the contribution of primary breeders.

The US broiler production system processes over 9.3 billion chickens annually through a highly integrated pyramid structure where two primary breeding companies supply genetic stock to approximately 40 major integrators operating nationwide. To provide a quantitative, system-wide estimate of contamination origins, I analyzed whole-genome sequences from Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates collected from over 800 processing facilities as part of the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service verification sampling (2019-2025). Single-linkage clustering identified i

Chronic Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol exposure in adolescent nonhuman primates: persistent abnormalities in economic demand and brain functional connectivity.

Although chronic cannabis use during adolescence can alter brain function and impair complex behavioral processes, it is unclear whether such deficits persist into adulthood. Using a coordinated awake neuroimaging and behavioral approach in nonhuman primates, we addressed this issue by examining the impact of chronic adolescent exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on brain functional connectivity and motivational processes during early adulthood. Female and male squirrel monkeys (n = 23) were treated daily for 6 months during adolescence with vehicle or either a low (0.32 mg/kg) or high d

Intranasally Delivered Adenoviral Vector Protects Chickens against Newcastle Disease Virus: Vaccine Manufacturing and Stability Assessments for Liquid and Lyophilized Formulations.

Newcastle disease (ND) remains a critical disease affecting poultry in sub-Saharan Africa. In some countries, repeated outbreaks have a major impact on local economies and food security. Recently, we developed an adenovirus-vectored vaccine encoding the Fusion protein from an Ethiopian isolate of Newcastle disease virus (NDV). The adenoviral vector was designed, and a manufacturing process was developed in the context of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund initiative funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. The industrially relevant recombinant vaccine techno
