The application of artificial intelligence models in predicting the risk of diabetic foot: a multicenter study.

This study explores diabetic foot (DF), a severe complication in diabetes, by combining deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) to develop a multi-model prediction tool. Early identification of high-risk DF patients can reduce disability and mortality. The research also aims to create an integrated application to assist clinicians in precise, efficient risk assessment for early intervention. In this multicenter retrospective study, 6,180 elderly diabetic patients (aged 60-85) were enrolled from 11 community hospitals in Shanghai in 2024. Lasso regression was used to identify 16 key DF ris…

A case report of the 2022 foot and mouth disease outbreaks in a sample of Indonesian feedlots.

In 2022, Indonesia experienced its first foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in over three decades, posing a considerable challenge to its beef feedlot industry and food security in the world's fourth most populous nation. This study aimed to report the strategies employed to manage the disease in a naïve population of high-performing cattle. Seven feedlots, located in the major beef-producing regions of Lampung and West Java, participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key feedlot personnel to gather data on their experiences during the outbreak. The industry d…

Rationale and technique for subulcer ultrasonic treatment of hard-to-heal diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are common complications of suboptimally controlled diabetes, characterised by non-healing, high morbidity, infection, recurrence (40-50%) and mortality. Ultrasonic debridement technology has been used for >30 years to treat cataracts safely and effectively, and animal studies have suggested that ultrasound debridement stimulates collagen turnover. This technology was applied in developing a system for soft tissue removal in tendons and elsewhere, with intended use in the elbow, knee, ankle, foot and shoulder. It was then modified for the treatment of DFUs. In this …

Cell surface display of VP1 of foot-and-mouth disease virus on Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

BACKGROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly infectious disease that mainly affects cloven-hoofed animals. The rapid spread of this disease hinders the success of control measures. This necessitates the urgent development of a vaccine to ensure the safe rearing of affected animals. However, traditional vaccines have some drawbacks including partial protection against persistent infection and a lack of cross-protection against different strains. RESULTS: We developed an oral vaccine that targets VP1, the major immunogenic protein of the causative FMD virus (FMDV). We expressed this pro…

Time course of motor learning during human-in-the-loop optimization of a prosthetic foot.

INTRODUCTION: People with a lower-limb amputation must undergo a process of co-adaptation with a prosthesis to achieve optimal walking performance. Human-in-the-loop optimization could identify optimal prosthetic settings, while also providing insight into the process of motor learning during prosthetic tuning. The aim of the study was to investigate the time course of motor learning of people with transtibial amputation during the human-in-the-loop optimization process of a prosthetic foot, in which the stiffness and alignment were optimized to minimize metabolic cost. METHODS: Ten people wi…

Factors contributing to jump heights in two-foot running jumps with and without a basketball.

INTRODUCTION: Two-foot running jumps (TFRJs) are used by basketball players during games and evaluations for maximum jump height with or without a ball. Prior research on TFRJs performed by volleyball players revealed whole-body kinematics and kinetics variables that contribute to jump height, though it is unknown whether these variables contribute to jump height similarly in TFRJs performed by basketball players, and whether there are differences in how different variables relate to jump height in TFRJs. The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between jump height and whole-…

Clinical outcomes of patients with Polyvascular disease admitted with an acute diabetic foot ulcer.

AIMS: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common cause of admission in patients with diabetes. Diabetes increases the likelihood of inpatient Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE), and the presence of polyvascular disease (PD), defined by the presence of atherosclerosis in two or more arterial beds, further amplifies this risk. We assessed the impact of PD on outcomes in patients admitted due to a DFU. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, we enrolled adult patients admitted to the diabetic foot unit between 2014 and 2019. The primary outcome was a composite of inpatient MACE or…

FGFR2 identified as a NETs-associated biomarker and therapeutic target in diabetic foot ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is characterized by impaired wound healing and chronic inflammation, partly driven by the excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). However, the molecular mediators linking NETs to failed tissue regeneration remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify and validate novel NETs-associated biomarkers in DFU using an integrative bioinformatics and machine learning approach. METHODS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from the GEO dataset GSE134431. These DEGs were intersected with a NETs-related gene set to ide…

Evaluation of Foot Osteotomies for Treating Residual Clubfoot Deformities in Ambulatory Children With Arthrogryposis.

INTRODUCTION: Clubfoot is the most common deformity seen in children with arthrogryposis. The primary method of treatment for this deformity is serial casting, which has a greater frequency of incomplete correction and recurrence than in idiopathic clubfoot. For both primary and recurring cases, surgical treatments vary from soft-tissue releases to talectomy. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of bony surgical procedures in correcting clubfoot in ambulatory children with arthrogryposis. METHODS: The study retrospectively examined ambulatory children with arthrogryposis, all of …
