Hand and arm problems are frequent in flautists. Severity is greatest in professional players, which can result in being unable to work. Based on a biomechanical analysis a support for the right hand was designed, which can be easily clipped on to the flute. Tests by professional flautists demonstrated that the right hand thumb support prevented rotation of the flute about its longitudinal axis. The latter reduces tension in forearm, wrist and fingers. This is the most important result of the study, which led to the introduction of the right hand thumb rest on the market.

Generally fan forced area heaters are considered to be incapable of causing burn injury. A case is presented where such a heater was used to prevent post-operative hypothermia after cut-back anoplasty to correct low anorectal malformation (imperforate anus) in a premature neonate. The neonate sustained dermo-epidermal (second degree) burns to the abdominal wall and right forearm which were swaddled with cloth and deep (third degree) burns to the fingers of left hand that were exposed as intravenous line was inserted at dorsum of the hand.

Acrokeratosis Verruciformis of Hopf (AKV) is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis. It usually develops during early childhood affecting both sexes equally. Typically, the lesions are warty to convex, brownish to skin-colored papules on the dorsa of the hands and feet, forearms and legs. A possible relationship with Darier disease has long been postulated on a clinical basis mainly. But recently, evidence has suggested that AKV and Darier disease are allelic disorders. I am reporting these two unrelated cases as a unilateral localized variant of AKV.

In this paper, we introduce our original method of autologous nerve grafting for substitution of the mandibular nerve after mandibular resection in three subjects. The lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm served as a donor nerve, and the graft was imbedded microsurgically at the junctures using an epineurial nerve suture technique. A 33-year-old man presented with very itchy red papules on the back of his hands and forearms. These papules appeared about 90 min after he had cleaned his aquarium in which he kept native fish and watersnails. He had obtained the watersnails some weeks before from a nearby pond. Examination of water from the aquarium revealed cercariae. The clinical diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis was corroborated. Cercarial dermatitis has repeatedly been seen in swimmers but not in aquarists keeping fish in a home aquarium.

Fourteen patients with Marfan syndrome, defined according to present criteria, had bone mineral content of the distal forearm measured by single photon absorptiometry. Patients were matched for age and sex with a large local group of healthy volunteers. The successful use of a conventional bone graft for mandibular reconstruction in combination with a free forearm flap is described. Naphthol AS is a coupling agent of cotton dyeing. 2 elderly women with hyperpigmentation of the neck and limbs are described. Both felt itching on the neck, forearms, and lower extremities and noted hyperpigmentation a month later. Both had worn cotton flannel nightdresses in winter. Patch testing with cotton flannel and methanol extracts were positive, but after estraction with methanol, the residual flannel did not react. The methanol extracts of cotton flannel, were analysed. The patients were tested with 5 extracted components; Naphthol AS was found to be the causative agent.

Isolated posttraumatic subluxation of the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon at the wrist has received scant attention in the literature. Five patients with this condition were seen during a 21-month period. All had chronic subluxation resulting from forearm hypersupination injury sustained during an athletic activity. Tumors arising within the median nerve in the region of the distal forearm, wrist, and palm are rare and their exact pathological nature has not been well clarified. One case is reported in a 47-year-old woman, in whom a mass of 3 years' duration was located in the thenar eminence of the right hand without causing any sensory or motor deficit. The tumor was surgically excised, and the continuity of the nerve branches was preserved. The diagnosis of lipofibroma of the median nerve is recommended for this entity. Other pathological lesions of the median nerve are mentioned.

Described is a 37-year-old male patient with signs and symptoms of localized perforating granuloma annulare (PGA) on the dorsa of his hands, fingers, elbows, and extensor forearms. The eighth Colombian case of lobomycosis and the one hundredth in the world literature is reported here. The patient was a 38-year-old female who showed a bilobed mass on the left forearm which had appeared at the site from where a similar lesion had been excised 19 years previously. She had always lived in a rural area, located in the humid subtropical forest. The tissue reactions to the fungus as well as the fruitless attempts to culture it are described. An analysis of the relevant literature is made and suggestions for experimental animal models are given in the text.
