Justice Involvement and Treatment Use Among Rural Veterans.

Veterans in rural areas and veterans involved in the criminal justice system have experienced less access to, and use of, health care. However, there is limited information on the treatment needs and health care access of justice-involved veterans who live in rural areas. This study used national Veterans Health Administration data from fiscal year 2014 to examine the interactive effect of rural/urban residence and justice involvement on mental health and substance use disorder treatment entry among veterans diagnosed with mental health or substance use disorders. Of veterans residing in rural

Human papillomavirus awareness and vaccination willingness among adults in Madagascar: a cross-sectional study.

Disease awareness is key to utilising healthcare services, including vaccinations. Madagascar, with high human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence (> 36%), marked cervical cancer rates, and low general routine vaccination coverage, faces major challenges in managing HPV-related diseases, mostly because of its fragile health system and the absence of HPV vaccination programmes. This study aimed to assess HPV awareness and vaccination willingness in Madagascar to inform strategies for implementing HPV vaccination programmes in the country. A cross-sectional survey among adults was conducted in the B

Appalachia - Bridging the Opioid Epidemic Amid the Fentanyl Crisis.

Although the opioid epidemic and fentanyl crisis are nationwide problems of immense proportions, calming the storm raging across the isolating geo-economic framework of Appalachia demonstrates the need for courageous, culturally effective programs that have the power to address and overcome the grave situation of addiction in this region. In the Appalachian region, unjust social structures are embedded in the communities' socio-economic conditions. As this reality poses even greater barriers to addressing the opioid epidemic in these communities, the restoration of social relationships within

Reaching the unreached: Task-shifting diabetic retinopathy screening in urban slums of low- and middle-income countries.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness, with the highest burden falling on populations living in urban slums and peri-urban settlements in low- and middle-income countries. These communities often remain outside the reach of conventional health systems due to systemic neglect, migratory lifestyles, and fragile infrastructure. Traditional facility-based screening models are often inaccessible, underscoring the urgent need for decentralized, community-embedded solutions. This review synthesizes global evidence on community and allied health worker (CAHW)-led DR scr

The pediatric oral mycobiome: a comprehensive review of its role in health and disease.

The oral microbiome functions as an intricate and coordinated microbial network, residing throughout the oral cavity in both health and disease. Although most oral microbiome research has focused on bacteria, there is a growing interest in oral fungal communities, known as the oral mycobiome. The oral cavity hosts a complex and diverse mycobiome comprising of an estimated 100 fungal species; however, the roles of these fungi have been largely overlooked and remain insufficiently characterized, particularly in children. This represents a critical gap, as early life is a key window for establish

Educational Opportunities for Down-Staging Breast Cancer in Low-Income Countries: an Example from Tanzania.

While more than 90% of breast cancer patients in western countries survive for at least 5 years, the survival rate in Tanzania is less than 45% because of late stage at presentation. The aim of this study was to identify patient and health system factors related to early or late stages of a breast cancer diagnosis. The study was conducted at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and included interviews with 196 breast cancer patients diagnosed with early (stage I/II, n = 44) or late (stage III/IV, n = 152) stage who were referred to ORCI from January 2016 to August

Interventions Supporting Long-term Adherence aNd Decreasing cardiovascular events (ISLAND): Pragmatic randomized trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend cardiac rehabilitation and long-term use of cardiac medications for most patients who have had a myocardial infarction (MI), but adherence to these secondary prevention treatments is suboptimal. METHODS: This is a multicenter, pragmatic, 3-arm randomized trial. Eligible patients (n = 2,742) with obstructive coronary artery disease are randomized post-MI to usual care or 1 of 2 intervention arms. Patients in the first intervention arm receive mail-outs sent on behalf of their cardiologist at 4, 8, 20, 32, and 44 weeks post-MI; content is designed to address det

Setting goals and targets for performance standards within the Swedish health care system.

The development of any health care system towards setting goals and targets and intended outcomes--with national guidelines, a legislative framework, limited resources, consumer influence and competitive forces--makes great demands on the control mechanisms required. The Swedish health care system has no tradition of goal formulation of this type. Hence, the purpose of this article is to clarify the goal-setting process of performance standards, and to examine whether goal setting is a relevant method within the organization of a Swedish county council. Goal setting can be seen partly as a con

Exploring UK breastmilk donors' perspectives on breastfeeding as a protective factor against breast cancer: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer yet awareness of this maternal health benefit remains limited. Public health messaging in the United Kingdom has traditionally emphasised infant benefits of breastfeeding with less attention to long-term maternal outcomes. This study aimed to explore breastmilk donor awareness of breastfeeding as a protective factor against breast cancer and their perspectives on communicating this information. DESIGN: Qualitative study using semistructured interviews analysed through reflexive thematic analysis, adopting a construct

Oral diseases and systemic conditions: correlation analyses from the Colombian national health records between 2016 and 2023.

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of oral, metabolic, circulatory, and nutritional diseases has tended to increase globally. As these diseases have common contributing factors, such as unhealthy diets, evaluating their epidemiological trends and the relation between them is relevant. In Colombia, the Ministry of Health records the frequency of consultation for these diseases through the Integrated Social Protection Information System. It facilitates the evaluation of their epidemiological behavior at the population level. AIM: To analyze and correlate the burden of oral diseases (caries and periodonti
