The authors report a case of chronic herpes virus infection of the face which developed in a 70-year old man already affected with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia of the B-cell type (CLL-B) with specific cutaneous localisations. Immunodepression was indicated only by marked hypogammaglobulinaemia. Cell-mediated immunity was preserved. The cutaneous lesions of the face were chronic and presented as pyodermatitis vegetans. A phenol chemical face peel restores a clean, youthful appearance by removing the fine wrinkles of the tired, aged face. This procedure has the additional advantage of decreasing the rate of appearance of precancerous and probably early cancerous lesions of the photoaged skin of the face. Knowledge of the history, theory, histology, and technique are made current. A comprehensive review demonstrates that pigmentary changes, third degree scarring, and cardiac arrhythmias appear to be the main complications. The technique is safe and effective if used in a judicious manner.

We describe an infant with meningitis and septicemia due to infection with two different strains of Haemophilus influenzae, with a urinary tract infection due to Escherichia coli and in whom herpes virus encephalitis was diagnosed within three days. Acinetobacter calcoaceticus septicemia developed three weeks later. No immunological deficiency could be demonstrated in the patient who recovered finally, albeit with sequelae due to encephalitis.

Twenty-two Japanese women with herpes genitalis were examined for subpopulations of peripheral lymphocytes, serum immunoglobulin and immune skin tests. The number of "active" T lymphocytes was significantly less in those with herpes genitalis, as compared to the healthy controls. Infectious non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is a sexually transmitted disease of considerable importance. The etiologic agents are bacteria, to lesser extent yeasts, parasites (Trichomonas) or viruses. A considerable part of NGU is caused by bacterial groups with peculiar properties: Mycoplasmas, which lack a rigid cell wall, and chlamydiae, which are intracellular parasites. Because of the diversity of etiologic agents and qualified microbiological diagnosis is a prerequisite for a specific and successful therapy.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the risk of malignancy following herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) and ophthalmic herpes simplex virus (HSV) in a large, diverse United States cohort.
DESIGN: Matched, retrospective cohort study.
