BMI gain and dietary characteristics are risk factors of MASLD in non-obese individuals.

This longitudinal observational study aimed to evaluate whether cardiometabolic factors and dietary characteristics are determinants of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in non-obese individuals (body mass index [BMI] < 25 kg/m²). The study was conducted at the Japanese Red Cross Society Kyoto Daiichi Hospital. Clinical data were longitudinally recorded at annual health checks. The diagnosis of MASLD was based on the results of abdominal ultrasonography and cardiometabolic criteria. Lifestyle behaviors and dietary characteristics were assessed using a self-admini

Postural control imbalance in individuals with a minor lower extremity amputation: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Minor lower extremity amputations (LEA) compromise postural control and increase the risk of falls. This issue is exacerbated by conditions such as diabetes, which affect proprioception and sensorimotor mechanisms. While orthopedic devices, including prostheses and orthoses, are frequently prescribed, their specific role in restoring postural control remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to synthesize current research on postural control in individuals with a minor LEA and to evaluate the interventions that may improve balance. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted

Association of plantar fascia thickness and different variables in individuals without heel pain.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fasciopathy is a common condition described as a combination of degeneration and inflammation of the collagenous tissue. The diagnosis is typically based on medical history, local findings, and ultrasound to assess the thickness of the fascia, where a plantar fascia thickness of 4 mm or more confirms the diagnosis. However, other factors besides plantar fasciopathy may be associated with the thickness of the plantar fascia. This study aims to investigate which characteristics, including foot length, physical activity level, and primary physical activity, are associated with

ICAM-1 autoantibodies detected in healthy individuals and cross-react with functional epitopes.

Intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein that regulates cell-cell interactions, signaling, and immune processes. ICAM-1 expression has been shown to be elevated in many types of infections and inflammatory diseases. Strategies to block ICAM-1 function, including monoclonal anti-ICAM-1 antibodies, have been successful in treating the effects of chronic respiratory, autoimmune, and cardiovascular diseases. Naturally occurring autoantibodies targeting cytokines, endothelial cells, and other host receptors have been identified, and have been found to play a role in

Sleep and affect in individuals with borderline personality disorder features: A daily diary study.

Given that people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features are vulnerable to emotion dysregulation, they might be particularly sensitive to the emotional impacts of poor sleep quality and low sleep quantity. In the present study, we evaluated whether BPD features moderate the relationship between daily sleep, measured objectively (total sleep time [TST]) and subjectively (perceived sleep quality), and self-reports of positive and negative affect (NA). A sample of 83 cohabitating couples (n = 166) were recruited for a 3-week daily diary study. Participants completed a BPD symptom mea

Altered Effective Connectivity Within a Thalamocortical Corollary Discharge Network in Individuals With Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Sequential saccade planning requires corollary discharge (CD) signals that provide information about the planned landing location of an eye movement. These CD signals may be altered among individuals with schizophrenia (SZ), providing a potential mechanism to explain passivity and anomalous self-experiences broadly. In healthy controls (HC), a key oculomotor CD network transmits CD signals from the thalamus to the frontal eye fields (FEF) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and also remaps signals from FEF to IPS. STUDY DESIGN: Here, we modeled fMRI data using dynami

A Systematic Review: Efficacy of Different Intraocular Pressure-Lowering Agents in Black Individuals.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, with the Black population experiencing an earlier onset and severe form of the disease compared to the White population. Despite the increased prevalence in the Black community, most research pertaining to glaucoma is focused on White patients. The current management guidelines recommend prostaglandin analogues and non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonists as the mainstay treatment, however their comparative efficacy in the Black community has not been thoroughly investigated. This systematic review aims to investigate the efficacy

Reflection of therapy progress in virtual reality for individuals affected by obesity: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Obesity is a major health challenge, requiring the development of more effective interventions. Setting realistic goals and developing detailed plans that anticipate potential challenges can be helpful strategies for bridging the intention-behavior gap. Immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), are considered to further support closing this gap by reducing the distance to one's future self. METHODS: This study investigates a novel VR-supported reflection exercise as an additional treatment module within a conservative obesity treatment regime. It examines its feasibility,

Relationship of GDF15 with hepatic mitochondrial respiration is depending on the presence of fibrosis in obese individuals.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Preclinical studies reported elevated growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) when mitochondrial function is reduced. In humans, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and steatohepatitis (MASH) exhibit different hepatic mitochondrial adaptation. We hypothesized that circulating GDF15 differently correlates with hepatic mitochondrial respiration in obesity and/or MASLD/MASH. METHODS: Humans without (n = 20) and with biopsy-confirmed MASLD (n = 20) or MASH (n = 20) underwent hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps to assess whole-body (M-value) and
