Associations Between Balance Measures and Risk of Fractures in 70-Year-Old Individuals.

CONTEXT: There are uncertainties regarding to what extent poor vision and distracting tasks reduce balance and are associated with fracture risk. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to investigate the associations between body sway assessed under different visual and multitasking conditions and later risk of fractures in older adults. METHODS: This cohort study was conducted in Umeå municipality, Sweden. A total of 5437 community-dwelling 70-year-old individuals participated in a population-based health examination. Body sway at baseline was measured using a Wii balance board in the lateral and anter

Individualized Breast Surveillance in a Young Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivor With High-Risk Features.

Survivors of pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma have an elevated lifetime risk of secondary breast malignancy, particularly those who received chest-directed radiation before age 30. This report describes a 19-year-old female patient, three years post-therapy for stage IIB Hodgkin lymphoma treated with 30 Gy mediastinal radiation, who presented within a structured survivorship program for evaluation of a self-detected, firm, mobile, non-tender left breast mass. Physical examination confirmed a 2 cm lesion in the upper outer quadrant without overlying skin changes, nipple inversion, or lymphadenopathy.

Training improves direct motor unit control by an individual with spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) has no cure and has left millions of people worldwide with paralysis. Recent studies have shown that despite paralysis, residual muscle activity can often be detected while performing intended movements. This provides an opportunity to identify residual motor unit (MU) action potentials and use them as control signals. In this case study, we explored whether a tetraplegic individual with cervical SCI could improve their ability to control the activity of individual motor units during a four-week, five-day experimental study. Each day, we recorded residual muscle electr

Identifying Key Predictors of Gait Speed in Individuals with Stroke: A Cross-Sectional Study.

One of the most important targets after stroke, which is a major cause of disability worldwide, is to improve gait ability. Although many different parameters required for gait improvement are known, determining the key parameters is of great importance. This study aims to identify key parameters that predict gait speed in individuals with stroke, with a particular focus on motor and sensory components. A total of 41 individuals with stroke participated in the study. Gait speed, balance, muscle strength, motor functions, spasticity, proprioception, and plantar cutaneous sensation were assessed

Changes in Thyroid Function and Autoimmunity in Older Individuals: Longitudinal Analysis of the Whickham Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies of thyroid function have demonstrated differing results. It remains unclear whether changes in thyroid function affect the diagnosis of subclinical thyroid dysfunction with aging. METHODS: Survivors of the Whickham cohort study were evaluated on 2 occasions between the years 2008 and 2012 and 2016 and 2019. Serum TSH, free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were measured on both occasions using the same assay under similar conditions. Individuals with known thyroid disease or on medications affecting thyroid function were excluded

Kinematics of Topspin Stroke Combinations in Table Tennis and its Inter-Individual Variability.

This study aimed to (1) determine the kinematics of the different body parts during the execution of one of the basic combinations of plays - a few selected strokes and the footwork used to combine them, and (2) evaluate the variation of these kinematics. The study included eight male advanced-level (polish national team) table tennis players (aged 22.7 ± 2.7 years). All of them were right-handed and presented an offensive style of play. Participants performed one task: performing a series of topspin strokes. Kinematic parameters were measured using the MR3 myoMuscle Master Edition system. The

[Acute respiratory distress syndrome-quo vadis : Innovative and individualized treatment approaches].

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome characterized by variable pathophysiology and different therapeutic approaches. Recent guidelines emphasize the importance of prone positioning and venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) for the most severe cases, while routine recruitment maneuvers and extracorporeal CO2-removal techniques are no longer recommended. To further advance the personalization of ARDS therapy, the identification of ARDS phenotypes using latent class analysis offers promising approaches for individualized treatment. Add

Challenging Behavior Domains in Individuals With Neurodevelopmental Genetic Syndromes: The Role of Psychological Features.

Problem behaviors (PB) commonly co-occur in individuals with neurodevelopmental genetic syndromes (NGDs) and increase the risk of injury to oneself and others. Despite the prevalence and clinical impact of these behaviors, knowledge regarding the psychological risk markers for PB among individuals with NGDs is currently lacking. To fill this gap, we explored the relative contributions of key developmental (age, speech production) and clinical (emotion regulation, anxiety, sensory sensitivity, social communication) characteristics as predictors of unique PB subdomains in a sample of 255 individ

Reduced Motor Individuality in Older Adults Revealed by Network-Based Gait Fingerprinting.

Background and Objectives: Gait is a fundamental human behavior essential for individual autonomy and well-being; it reflects a complex inter-joint coordination that can change with aging. Materials and Methods: This study applied a network-based fingerprinting approach to evaluate the stability and individuality of gait coordination in adults (mean age: 41.6) and older adults (mean age: 73.5). Each participant completed two gait recordings, from which we constructed kinematic networks (i.e., kinectome) representing joint-velocity correlations. Then, borrowing from network fingerprinting techn

Postural control imbalance in individuals with a minor lower extremity amputation: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Minor lower extremity amputations (LEA) compromise postural control and increase the risk of falls. This issue is exacerbated by conditions such as diabetes, which affect proprioception and sensorimotor mechanisms. While orthopedic devices, including prostheses and orthoses, are frequently prescribed, their specific role in restoring postural control remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to synthesize current research on postural control in individuals with a minor LEA and to evaluate the interventions that may improve balance. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted
