Improvement of cattle productivity through rapid alleviation of African animal trypanosomosis by integrated disease management practices in the agropastoral zone of Yalé, Burkina Faso.

Investigations to identify the causes of high mortalities in cattle in the agropastoral zone (ZAP) of Yalé started in March 1993. African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) was found to be the major constraint, with incidence rates exceeding 30%, justifying a tsetse control programme, which started in March/ April 1994. The treatment of all cattle at bimonthly intervals with deltamethrin 1% pour on and the display of 1500 insecticide impregnated targets during the 6 months of the dry season each year helped to reduce the tsetse populations (Glossina tachinoides and G. morsitans submorsitans) by more

Yellow fever vaccination during pregnancy and spontaneous abortion: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess a possible association between Yellow fever (YF) vaccine (inadvertently) administered during early pregnancy and spontaneous abortion. METHOD: A hospital-based case-control study conducted in a Brazilian town after a YF vaccine campaign that followed an epidemic of dengue. The study included 39 women who attended a university hospital with spontaneous abortion (cases) and 74 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic of that hospital (controls). RESULTS: The crude odds ratio (relative risk estimate) of this association was 2.49, which dropped to 2.29 (95% CI 0.65-8.03

[Ectoparasites in rodents of the urban region of Belo Horizonte, MG. III. Fleas, Anoplura and Acari indices in Rattus norvegicus norvegicus].

The total and specific indices of fleas, lice and mites were determined for ectoparasites on Rattus norvegicus norvegicus capture in urban areas of Belo Horizonte, Minas state, Brazil, from June 1980 to September 1982. In view of the limiting or critical values attributed to flea indices above all the "cheopis" index, proposed by several authors as a complementary measure for bubonic plague surveillance, the community of Belo Horizonte would have been exposed to this infection. The annual total indices ranged from 0.3 to 2.4 and the prevalent flea was Xenopsylla cheopis (99.2%), with the highe

Eastern equine encephalitis in Massachusetts, 1957-1976. A prospective study centered upon analyses of mosquitoes.

Reappearance of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Massachusetts residents in the 1970's provided an opportunity to assess the predictive value of data on rainfall, EEE in horses, and carriage of EEE virus (EEEV) by mosquitoes, factors which had been studied annually since the last EEE outbreak in 1955-1956. The cycle of multiple cases during 1973-1975 started in a second consecutive year of rainfall that exceeded the annual mean by more than 20 cm, conditions recapitulating the 1955-1956 experience. In 1973, widespread EEE fatalities in horses presaged human cases, another recapitulation of

Malaria prevention practices and associated environmental risk factors in a rural community in Wakiso district, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Besides use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), other complimentary measures including suitable housing structures, and environmental management that reduce breeding of malaria vectors, can be implemented at households to prevent the disease. However, most studies on malaria prevention have focused mainly on ITNs and IRS. The aim of this study was therefore to assess malaria prevention practices beyond ITNs and IRS, and associated environmental risk factors including housing structure in rural Wakiso district, Uganda. METHODS: A clustere

Detection of a knockdown resistance mutation associated with permethrin resistance in the body louse Pediculus humanus corporis by use of melting curve analysis genotyping.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Louse-borne diseases are prevalent in the homeless, and body louse eradication has thus far been unsuccessful in this population. We aim to develop a rapid and robust genotyping method usable in large field-based clinical studies to monitor permethrin resistance in the human body louse Pediculus humanus corporis. We assessed a melting curve analysis genotyping method based on real-time PCR using hybridization probes to detect the M815I-T917I-L920F knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation in the paraorthologous voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) α subunit gene, which is associated with permethr

Protective effects of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill flower extract against imidacloprid-induced hepatotoxicity: Modulation of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and Raf/MEK/ERK-related gene expression.

Imidacloprid (IMI), a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, is associated with hepatotoxic effects. This study evaluated the protective potential of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. flower extract against IMI-induced liver injury in rats. Animals were allocated into four groups: control, extract-treated, IMI-treated, and extract plus IMI. Hepatic damage was assessed using histopathology, biochemical oxidative stress markers, and gene expression analysis of apoptotic and Raf/MEK/ERK pathway markers. IMI exposure induced marked liver injury, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, while co-treatment wi

Review: Synergistic effects of environmental pollutants: Multiple stressors driving the transmission of vector-borne diseases and the vicious cycle.

This review systematically examines the mechanisms through which multiple environmental pollutants-including microplastics, heavy metals, atmospheric particulates, pesticide residues, water eutrophication, and artificial light at night-synergistically exacerbate the transmission risk of mosquito-borne diseases. A conceptual framework of the "pollution - resistance - transmission" vicious cycle is proposed, illustrating how pollutants not only directly impair mosquito physiology and drive the evolution of insecticide resistance but also systematically enhance pathogen transmission efficiency by

A Serotoninomic Framework for Reproductive and Integrative Toxicology: Molecular, Neurochemical, and Behavioural Perspectives on Permethrin Exposure.

Serotoninomics, a nascent emerging discipline within the field of omics, provides a transdisciplinary framework for understanding reproductive toxicology via serotonergic signalling. This research investigates the neuroendocrine effects of permethrin, a commonly used pyrethroid insecticide often considered to pose a low risk to humans, and positions it as a model compound for evaluating reproductive susceptibility beyond conventional endocrine endpoints. It is hypothesized that serotonin, traditionally examined in neuropsychiatric contexts, plays an essential role in gonadal function, hormonal

The discovery of pesticide lead compounds from microbial secondary metabolites.

Microbial secondary metabolites have historically provided numerous agrochemicals with novel chemical scaffolds and distinctive modes of action, contributing substantially to modern pesticide science. However, the long-term accumulation of natural product screening efforts has resulted in the frequent rediscovery of known compounds, and this issue, combined with the global spread of pesticide-resistant pests and pathogens, has become a serious challenge in agrochemical research. This commemorative review summarizes the research achievements of the author focusing on the discovery of pesticide

Insights into Dengue fever dynamics through advanced mathematical modeling and simulation.

This paper presents an innovative SITR(H)-SEI(M) model designed to analyze and understand the dynamics of dengue fever transmission. The model offers an accurate analysis of disease spread and is applied to recent health data from multiple countries, including Singapore, Costa Rica, Yemen, and India. We investigate the existence, uniqueness, and stability of solutions, and thoroughly examine the basic reproduction number, equilibrium points, and their stability effects. The results show that the disease-free equilibrium is stable when the basic reproduction number is below one, indicating cont

Pharmacological properties and underlying mechanisms of aurantio‑obtusin (Review).

Herbal medicine has been widely applied for a range of diseases in China since antiquity. Cassia obtusifolia L. and Cassia tora L. are plants whose seeds have high reported medicinal values and have been documented to function as a laxative, to lower lipid level and to lower blood pressure. The main active ingredient in Cassia seeds is aurantio-obtusin (AO), which is an anthraquinone monomer compound. Currently, AO is listed in China as a quality control index component of Cassia seeds. In clinical practice in China, AO is typically used to treat obesity, diabetes and its complications, non-al

Modular synthesis of 1,2-azaborines via ring-opening BN-isostere benzannulation.

1,2-Azaborines represent a unique class of benzene isosteres that have attracted interest for developing pharmaceuticals with better potency and bioavailability. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to prepare monocyclic 1,2-azaborines, particularly multi-substituted ones, in an efficient and modular manner. Here we report a straightforward method to directly access diverse multi-substituted 1,2-azaborines from readily available cyclopropyl imines/ketones and dibromoboranes under relatively mild conditions. The reaction is scalable, shows a broad substrate scope, and tolerates a range

Transcriptome analysis reveals salivary gland-specific neuropeptide signaling genes in the predatory stink bug, Picromerus lewisi.

Predatory stink bugs derive from phytophagous stink bugs and evolved enhanced predation skills. Neuropeptides are a diverse class of ancient signaling molecules that regulate physiological processes and behavior in animals, including stink bugs. Neuropeptide evolution might be important for the development of predation because neuropeptides can be converted to venoms that impact prey. However, information on neuropeptide signaling genes in predatory stink bugs is lacking. In the present study, neuropeptide signaling genes of Picromerus lewisi, an important predatory stink bug and an effective

A general supramolecular adjuvant for pesticides based on host-guest recognition.

BACKGROUND: Pesticides are indispensable in agriculture and can effectively improve the yields and quality of crops. Due to their weak water solubility, most pesticides need to be dissolved by adding solubilizing adjuvants. In this work, based on molecular recognition of the macrocyclic host, we developed a novel supramolecular adjuvant, called sulfonated azocalix[4]arene (SAC4A), which significantly improves the water solubility of pesticides. RESULTS: SAC4A presents multiple advantages, including high water solubility, strong binding affinity, universality, and simple preparation. SAC4A sho

Recent progress in electrochemical sensors for detection and quantification of malaria.

Malaria is still a major disease in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia. This is despite different interventions by the World Health Organization (WHO), such as insecticide-treated mosquito net, antimalarial drugs, indoor residual spraying, and rapid diagnostic tools. In 2018, the mortality rate due to malaria was estimated to be 405 000, with children under five years accounting for 67% of all malaria deaths. Malaria can be prevented and treated using different strategies as recommended by WHO. However, the lack of rapid diagnostic tools with good selectivity and sensitivity is still a cha

Optimized CRISPR tools and site-directed transgenesis towards gene drive development in Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes.

Culex mosquitoes are a global vector for multiple human and animal diseases, including West Nile virus, lymphatic filariasis, and avian malaria, posing a constant threat to public health, livestock, companion animals, and endangered birds. While rising insecticide resistance has threatened the control of Culex mosquitoes, advances in CRISPR genome-editing tools have fostered the development of alternative genetic strategies such as gene drive systems to fight disease vectors. However, though gene-drive technology has quickly progressed in other mosquitoes, advances have been lacking in Culex.
