Visual perception and appraisal of persons with impairments: a randomised controlled field experiment using photo elicitation.

PURPOSE: Visual cues from persons with impairments may trigger stereotypical generalisations that lead to prejudice and discrimination. The main objective of this pilot study is to examine whether visual stimuli of impairment activate latent prejudice against disability and whether this connection can be counteracted with priming strategies. METHODS: In a field experiment, participants were asked to rate photographs showing models with mental impairments, wheelchair users with paraplegia, and persons without any visible impairment. Participants should appraise the models with regard to severa

Effect of motivational interviewing on reduction of alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: Methadone-maintained (MM) clients who engage in excessive alcohol use are at high risk for HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Nurse-led hepatitis health promotion (HHP) may be one strategy to decrease alcohol use in this population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of nurse-led HHP, delivered by nurses compared to motivational interviewing (MI), delivered by trained therapists in group sessions or one-on-one on reduction of alcohol use. METHODS: A three-arm randomized, controlled trial, conducted with 256 MM adults attending one of five MM outpatient clinics in the Los A

Common mental disorders in TB/HIV co-infected patients in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between TB/HIV co-infection and common mental disorders (CMD) has been scarcely investigated. In this study, we compared the occurrence of CMD in TB/HIV co-infected and non-co-infected HIV patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional study in three hospitals in Ethiopia from February to April, 2009. The study population consisted of 155 TB/HIV co-infected and 465 non-co-infected HIV patients. CMD was assessed through face to face interviews by trained clinical nurses using the Kessler 10 scale. Several risk factors for CMD were assessed using a st

Migraine: a missing link between somatic symptoms and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research into the role of migraine in somatic symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) has long been neglected; hence, the aim of this study was to compare the impact of migraine and anxiety comorbidities on the somatic symptoms of patients with MDD. METHODS: Consecutive psychiatric outpatients with MDD in a medical center were enrolled. MDD and anxiety disorders were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR; migraine was diagnosed according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edition. Four scales were administered and evaluated

A qualitative study of mental health problems among children displaced by war in northern Uganda.

While multiple studies have found that children affected by war are at increased risk for a range of mental health problems, little research has investigated how mental health problems are perceived locally. In this study we used a previously developed rapid ethnographic assessment method to explore local perceptions of mental health problems among children and adults from the Acholi ethnic group displaced by the war in northern Uganda. We conducted 45 free list interviews and 57 key informant interviews. The rapid assessment approach appears to have worked well for interviewing caretakers and

Panic disorder as a risk factor for post-partum depression: Results from the Perinatal Depression-Research & Screening Unit (PND-ReScU) study.

BACKGROUND: Although the role of anxiety disorders on the development of Post-partum Depression (PPD) have already been studied in literature, that of individual anxiety disorders has not received specific attention. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Panic Disorder (PD) and family history for PD as risk factors for PPD. METHODS: Six hundred women were recruited in a prospective, observational study at the 3rd month of pregnancy and followed up until the 6th month after delivery. At baseline, risk factors for PPD, Axis-I disorders and family history for psychiatric disorders

The experiences and concerns of young adults (18-40 years) living with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

BACKGROUND: Although the implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a widely accepted life-saving technology, adjusting to life after ICD implantation may vary according to the recipient's age. Few studies have investigated how young adults manage life with an ICD and there are no studies describing their concerns or experiences of living with an ICD. AIM: The aim of the study was to describe the experiences and concerns of young adults (18-40 years) living with an ICD. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive methodology was chosen incorporating interviews and written narrative responses to inve

Social rhythm regularity and the onset of affective episodes in bipolar spectrum individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that bipolar disorder individuals may have less social rhythm regularity than normal controls and that this may contribute to their affective symptoms and episodes. This study examined whether regularity prospectively predicted time to onset of major depressive, hypomanic and manic episodes in a sample with bipolar spectrum disorders. METHODS: We recruited 414 undergraduate students from Temple University and University of Wisconsin diagnosed with cyclothymia, bipolar II disorder, or with no affective disorder (normal controls). Participants completed the Social

MMPI-2 profiles of women with eating disorders in a Dutch day treatment sample.

In this study, we examined the MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) profiles of 324 Dutch patients with eating disorders at an eating disorder day treatment program. We studied the MMPI-2 profiles in 5 diagnostic eating disorder groups. All diagnostic subgroups showed high mean elevations of the T scores on the same 6 or 7 scales. Remarkable similarities existed between the mean profile configurations. The MMPI-2 distinguished especially in that patients with restricting anorexia nervosa scored lower on one Validity scale (F), two Clinical scales (1 and 2) and several

Coping with headache.

OBJECTIVE: To describe self-initiated actions and cognitive strategies used for coping by women who suffer from episodic tension-type headache. DESIGN: Qualitative data from focus-group interviews were analysed according to Giorgi's phenomenological approach, inspired by Lazarus's theory of coping. SUBJECTS: A total of 15 women with tension-type headache, 20-60 years old, were recruited to three different focus groups through newspaper advertising. RESULTS: To cope with episodic tension-type headache, rhythm and balance in actions like eating, drinking, and sleeping were essential. Several

Psychosomatic characterization of adjustment disorders in the medical setting: some suggestions for DSM-V.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorders have been found to be the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis in the medically ill. Problems have been raised, however, as to their clinical value. The aim of the study was to characterize the psychosomatic features of adjustment disorders. METHODS: One hundred patients with medical illness and a diagnosis of adjustment disorder according to DSM-IV criteria were interviewed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (DCPR) system, consisting of 12 clusters. RESULTS: A considerable overlap was shown between adjustment disorders and DCPR cl

Psychometric delineation of the most discriminant symptoms of depressive mixed states.

Recent studies have shown that depressive mixed state (DMX), i.e., a major depressive episode (MDE) plus 3 or more intra-MDE hypomanic symptoms, is prevalent in bipolar-II disorder (BP-II) and not uncommon in major depressive disorder (MDD) outpatients. The main aim of the present analyses was to find the most discriminant intra-MDE hypomanic signs and symptoms predicting depressive mixed state. Consecutive 602 MDE outpatients (348 BP-II, 254 MDD) were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Hypomania Interview Guide, and the Family History Screen, by a senior psychi

Three diagnostic approaches to Asperger syndrome: implications for research.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the implications for research of the use of three alternative definitions for Asperger syndrome (AS). Differences across the three nosologic systems were examined in terms of diagnostic assignment, IQ profiles, comorbid symptoms, and familial aggregation of social and other psychiatric symptoms. METHOD: Standard data on diagnosis, intellectual functioning, comorbidity patterns, and family history were obtained on 65 individuals screened for a very high probability of having autism without mental retardation (or higher functioning autism, HFA) or AS. Diagnoses of AS were

Retrospective measures of childhood abuse: concurrent validity and reliability in a nonclinical sample with borderline features.

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of retrospective reports of childhood sexual and physical abuse by comparing two assessment formats, interview and questionnaire, and looking at both the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability over 2 years. Nonclinical participants completed the Family Experiences Interview (FEI; Ogata et al., 1990) and the Family Experiences Questionnaire (FEQ; Wheelock, Lohr, & Silk, 1997) at age 18 and the FEQ again at age 20. Both assessments evaluate individuals for sexual and physical abuse before age 18, and the two have similar formats and wordi

The relation of psychogenic excoriation with psychiatric disorders: a comparative study.

Psychogenic excoriation (PE), characterized by excessive scratching or picking of the skin, is not yet recognized as a symptom of a distinct DSM-IV disorder. It is a chronic disorder with a high rate of psychiatric comorbidity. The purpose of this study was to compare patients diagnosed with PE and patients with another dermatological disease in terms of comorbid psychiatric disorders. Thirty-one consecutive subjects were recruited from an outpatient dermatology clinic. The control group was composed of 31 patients with chronic urticaria. All subjects were interviewed using the Structured Clin

Motivations associated with methamphetamine use among HIV+ men who have sex with men.

Previous research has documented an association between methamphetamine (meth) use and high-risk sex among HIV- men who have sex with men (MSM); however, little is known about the sexual risk behaviors of HIV+ meth-using MSM. The purpose of this study was to explore personal motivators of meth use among HIV+ MSM, and to elaborate upon the interaction between meth use and risky sex. Thematic analysis of qualitative data from 25 HIV+ MSM revealed meth use was associated with high rates of anal sex, low rates of condom use, multiple sex partners, sexual marathons, and anonymous sex. Personal moti
