Whole-body patterns of the range of joint motion in young adults: masculine type and feminine type.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the whole-body patterns of joint flexibility and their related biological and physical factors contributes not only to clinical assessments but also to the fields of human factors and ergonomics. In this study, ranges of motion (ROMs) at limb and trunk joints of young adults were analysed to understand covariation patterns of different joint motions and to identify factors associated with the variation in ROM. METHODS: Seventy-eight healthy volunteers (42 males and 36 females) living on Okinawa Island, Japan, were recruited. Passive ROM was measured at multiple joint

[Interpretation of the pivot test using accelerometers in the orthopedic practice].

The anterior (A) and posterior (P) cruciate ligaments (CL) of the knee, located inside the joint, connect the femur and the tibia and thus provide stability in the anteroposterior axis of one bone over the other. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) may be injured as a result of rotation when practicing a sport involving turning with the foot on the ground. ACL injuries are diagnosed with maneuvers like the Lachman, drawer and pivot. Accelerometers were used to plot the pivot maneuver in patients seeing the orthopedist surgeon using the KT1000 test as gold standard. This case-control descripti

Vasculopathy, Ischemia, and the Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery: Report of Three Cases.

Multi-modal neurophysiologic monitoring consisting of triggered and spontaneous electromyography and transcranial motor-evoked potentials may detect and prevent both acute and slow developing mechanical and vascular nerve injuries in lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) surgery. In case report 1, a marked reduction in the transcranial motor-evoked potentials on the operative side alerted to a 28% decrease in mean arterial blood pressure in a 54-year-old woman during an L3-4, L4-5 LLIF. After hemodynamic stability was regained, transcranial motor-evoked potentials returned to baseline and the

Landing ground reaction forces in figure skaters and non-skaters.

Researchers and clinicians have suggested that overuse injuries to the lower back and lower extremities of figure skaters may be associated with the repeated high impact forces sustained during jump landings. Our primary aim was to compare the vertical ground reaction forces (GRFs) in freestyle figure skaters (n = 26) and non-skaters (n = 18) for the same barefoot single leg landing on a force plate from a 20 cm platform. Compared with non-skaters, skaters exhibited a significantly greater normalised peak GRF (3.50 ± 0.47 × body weight for skaters vs. 3.13 ± 0.45 × body weight for non-skaters)

Pudendal nerve palsy in trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery.

The incidence of pudendal nerve palsy following routine trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery procedures ranges from 1.9% to 27.6%. Excessive and/or prolonged traction against the perineal post of a traction table, leading to direct compression and localised ischaemia to the nerve are suggested mechanisms of injury. Misuse of traction and the inappropriate placement of the perineal post, leading to crushing and stretching of the pudendal nerve, are two main contributing factors leading to its postoperative palsy. The sequelae may be sensory, motor or mixed. In most cases, these injuries are

Latissimus dorsi flap coverage of soft tissue defect following below-knee amputation: emphasis on flap design and recipient vessels.

High-energy trauma to the lower extremity often results in amputation of the limb. For maximal preservation of limb length during amputation, free tissue transfer is often necessary. In this study, we report our experience of stump coverage using latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flaps with an emphasis on flap design and recipient vessels. Between January 2005 and September 2010, twelve patients with severe traumatic injuries to the lower leg underwent below-knee amputations with stump coverage using latissimus dorsi free flaps. The primary and secondary cases were approached differently regar

Effects of fatigue on running mechanics associated with tibial stress fracture risk.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of progressive fatigue on the parameters of running mechanics previously associated with tibial stress fracture risk. METHODS: Twenty-one trained male distance runners performed three sets (Pre, Mid, and Post) of six overground running trials at 4.5 m.s(-1) (± 5%). Kinematic and kinetic data were collected during each trial using a 12-camera motion capture system, force platform, and head and leg accelerometers. Between tests, each runner ran on a treadmill for 20 min at their corresponding lactate threshold (LT) speed. P

Closed intramedullary nailing of the femur in the lateral decubitus position.

Closed intramedullary nailing is the standard of care for femoral shaft fractures and the technique now has broader applications with the proliferation of cephalomedullary instrumentation for the treatment of intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric femur fractures. Nailing in the lateral decubitus position has several advantages, but we are unaware of a detailed, contemporary description of the surgical technique published in the English language literature.A retrospective review of 158 patients treated with intramedullary nailing in the lateral position by a single surgeon over a 3-year period

Ankle taping can improve proprioception in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Taping is a common technique to treat inversion ankle sprains, but the effects of tape on proprioception are still not clear. The purpose of this study was to establish whether proprioception would be modified by the use of ankle tape. To do so we studied joint position sense (JPS) in healthy volunteers using three-dimensional (3D) movement analysis systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty healthy volunteers (mean age and SD = 23.2 ± 4.2) were asked to actively reproduce four different ankle positions: 10 degrees of dorsiflexion, neutral, 10 degrees and 20 degrees of plantarflexion. Labor-related sacral stress fracture presenting as lower limb radicular pain.

In contrast to radicular pain during pregnancy, the incidence of postpartum radicular pain is rare. Sacral stress fractures are unusual but important causes for low-back and buttock pain and even postpartum radicular pain. To date, only 10 postpartum sacral stress fractures have been reported in the literature, with two descriptions of radicular pain as the presenting symptom. A 36-year-old woman, 7 days after her second delivery, presented with symptoms of spontaneous acute claudicating in conjunction with a left-leg radicular pain for 5 days. Imaging studies revealed a left sacral stress fra

Clinical and neurophysiological study of peroneal nerve mononeuropathy after substantial weight loss in patients suffering from major depressive and schizophrenic disorder: Suggestions on patients' management.

BACKGROUND: Peroneal nerve is susceptible to injuries due to its anatomical course. Excessive weight loss, which reduces the fatty cushion protecting the nerve, is considered a common underlying cause of peroneal palsy. Other predisposing factors, such as prolonged postures, traumas of the region or concomitant pathologies (for example diabetes mellitus) contribute to the nerve damage. This study aims to reveal the multiple predisposing factors of peroneal nerve mononeuropathy after substantial weight loss that coexist in psychiatric patients and to make suggestions on their management. Will whole-body vibration training help increase the range of motion of the hamstrings?

Muscle strain is one of the most common injuries, resulting in a decreased range of motion (ROM) in this group of muscles. Systematic stretching over a period of time is needed to increase the ROM. The purpose of this study was to determine if whole-body vibration (WBV) training would have a positive effect on flexibility training (contract-release method) and thereby on the ROM of the hamstring musculature. In this study, 19 undergraduate students in physical education (12 women and 7 men, age 21.5 +/- 2.0 years) served as subjects and were randomly assigned to either a WBV group or a control

Lack of myoblasts migration between transplanted and host muscles of mdx and normal mice.

Extensor digitorum longus muscles of normal mice (C57BL/10ScSn hereafter called C57) were orthotopically transplanted into dystrophin-deficient mice (mdx) and reciprocally, mdx Extensor digitorum longus muscles were transplanted into C57 mice. After an initial phase of degeneration, transplanted muscles regenerate nearly completely, as evaluated from the maximum isometric force of muscles isolated 60 days after the surgery. In other similar experiments, instead of isolating the grafted muscles, we excised the antero-external muscles of the leg, including the grafted muscle. Cryostat cross-sect

Motor competence explains the variance in biomechanical variables related to anterior cruciate ligament injury risk, with distinct predictors for male and female athletes.

PURPOSE: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries have consistently been linked to specific kinetic and kinematic patterns, including elevated vertical ground reaction forces, increased knee abduction angle and moment (dynamic valgus), reduced knee flexion during landing and excessive hip adduction/internal rotation. However, the relationship between motor competence as a factor affecting athletes' performance and kinetic and kinematic variables has not yet been investigated. METHODS: A total of 112 elite athletes (66 males and 46 females; mean age = 19.4 ± 1.1 years) from basketball, volley
