Computed tomography (CT) findings were compared with operative ones for 50 patients with esophageal and proximal gastric cancer. In diagnosis of metastases to the upper abdominal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes ST sensitivity reached 93.3%, specificity 85% and accuracy 90.3%. The best diagnostic results were obtained in detection of metastases to the nodes of the celiac trunk branch and paraaortal fat (94.2%). Lower CT resolution appeared in diagnosis of perigastric node metastatic involvement in the primary tumor location in the proximal stomach.

64 patients (38 with esophageal and 26 with gastric carcinoma) underwent a preoperative endosonography. In 21 patients with esophageal tumors and in 24 patients with gastric tumors a complete endosonographic examination was performed. Rare large ab initio calcifications of a primary mediastinal seminoma in a 16-year-old boy and of para-aortic nodal metastatic ovarian seminoma in a 14-year-old girl are demonstrated with CT but not with conventional radiography. They are most likely dystrophic calcifications because of the absence of other germ cell tumor components and infective granulomatous disease. Routine use of CT might detect more such calcifications in untreated seminoma.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) has increased in different geographic areas around the world. The aim of this study is to know the incidence and clinical characteristics of CMM in the area of Leon between 1980-1989.

Advances in the staging of regional mediastinal lymph node metastases from lung carcinoma include transcarinal needle aspiration. However, since most clinicians feel that documented tumor involvement of subcarinal nodes is a strong contraindication to aggressive surgical resection, a falsely positive carinal aspirate could deny a patient potentially curative resectional surgery. Herein, we present a case of a falsely positive transcarinal needle aspirate in which resectional surgery was carried out with a subsequent 34-month disease-free state.

The role of curative en bloc resection for carcinoma of the lower esophagus and cardia is still controversial. The experience with a selective approach in 52 patients with cancer in this location is reviewed. Thirty-two of the cancers were squamous cell, 13 adenocarcinoma, and seven adenocarcinoma associated with Barrett's esophagus.
